1 NEWSLETTER 3 23rd October 2015 Dear Parents/Carers It has been a very busy couple of weeks at school and when I noticed that is was almost four weeks since our last newsletter I thought it was time for Newsletter No 3. For this I can only apologise. For the latest about events at school please read on. Open Day Last Wednesday we had a very positive Open Day at school where school was open to our current parents as well as those who were considering Scargill for their children in September In all we had over 100 families represented and over the course of the morning I received lots of very positive comments about the school. We want to continue to get better, become even more open and encourage our wider #scargillfamily to become more involved in school. #ScargillFamily Hopefully, many of you will have had the chance to see our new display near the front office which celebrates our #ScargillFamily. We have tried to include all children and adults linked with school but in such an undertaking it is possible that we may have missed someone. If you have had a look and can t see your child then please let us know and we can put it right. Every member of our #ScargillFamily is important to us. My thanks go to Mrs Eyre and her wonderful team of helpers who produced the display. If you have not been able to see it in school then you could have a look at the copy that can be found on our twitter feed. Scargill Citizens At the moment in our worships we have been thinking about the characteristics that make a good Scargill citizen. I was very impressed by one child who responded to the question How should you behave during the open day? His answer was We should behave as Scargill citizens should behave. So far we have looked at five different characteristics (determination, forgiveness, kindness, caring for others and hardworking) and we will be looking at others after half term. They also match in quite well with the British Values that the government are encouraging us to promote. Why not ask your child and see how many they can remember. Stevens Award This week we have awarded our first Stevens Award. This is a new and very special award that we are giving out just six times each year at the end of each half term. You will find the first winners recorded later in the newsletter. The award is given for someone who has made a big effort in school. This can be to improve a certain area, it could be for sustained excellence or for making a noticeable improvement. There are no rules except that each class will nominate one person from each class and then from these nominees there will be two cup winners one from EYFS/KS1 and one from KS2. It is a real honour for all the nominees and they should all be considered winners. Each nominee will be invited to a small tea party hosted by the headteacher which will usually take place in the first week after the awards are made.

2 Building work The two Y2 classrooms that are currently being refurbished are nearing completion and the children and staff are all looking forward to getting back in. We have a finishing date for the work of the 12 November. This is the date that we hope to see completion but being realistic it may be a week or so later. Whatever happens we should be back in the classrooms for the new year. Poppy Sales After half term we will be selling poppies in school. If your child wants to contribute to this good cause then please send a contribution in with your child. Photographs Individual and family group photographs are being taken in school on 20 th November We will organise groups during the day for any children who have siblings at school but if you have a child who is below the school age that you want in the photograph as well then please come into the new hall at the start of the day 8.45am so that these can be done first. New Governor I am pleased to announce that we have been able to appoint a new parent governor from the recent election process. The result was announced by text but in case you missed it Mrs Kate Rennison has been appointed to this position to work alongside Mr Chris Collins and Ms Marie Eastwood as your three parent representatives on the governing body. Bible Presentation Y5 The Scargill trustees traditionally give a gift of a good news bible to all children in Y5. This year these bibles will be presented in a service at St Wilfrid s church on 27 th November at 9.30am. All parents and friends of our Y5 children are welcome to join us for what promises to be a lovely service. Messy Church for EYFS, Y1 and Y2 Some of you may have heard or Messy Church and some of your children may have even participated in some of the sessions. It is a session at Church where the children are invited to participate in a number of fun craft activities and yes some of them are quite messy! The church is keen that all of our younger children get the opportunity to experience Messy Church and therefore they have invited the school to visit church on 12 th November in three year groups. More information will be given when we have it but initial plans are that two of the year groups would go up in the morning and then the other would go in the afternoon. Recent Sports Round up Cross Country On Wednesday 21 st October we sent a team of cross country runners to compete in one of the local cluster events at St John Houghton. After a fantastic event I am pleased to say that our Y1/2 team

3 finished 1 st overall with William C and Malachy C picking up individual medals of 1 st and 3 rd respectively for the boys and Lara O winning 1 st place for the girls. The Y3/4 team finished second in their competition overall, Daniel S and Isabelle R acquiring individual medals of gold and silver respectively for the boys and girls. Finally our Y5/6 team placed just outside of the top three but Emma O and Megan S finished 2 nd and 3 rd to get the silver and bronze medals. Congratulations to all those who took part, it was a huge team effort as the points from all competitors counted towards our final team result. The level of commitment and support from the team for each other was truly fantastic. We must also say a big thank you to our parents who helped with the transport to and from the competition, we would not have been able to take part without your support! KS2 Trampolining Festival Recently, we had the opportunity to take a small number of children to receive high-quality trampoline coaching from some of the coaches at Phoenix Trampolining Club. It was a fantastic event that the children really enjoyed. The level of difficulty was definitely high but our children did a great job at pushing themselves to achieve their very best. Mr Redhead Awards The winner of the House Cup at the Scargill Star worship was the Blue team of WESTWOOD on 2 nd October and the yellow team of ROYCE on 16 th October. Well done! The winners of the Class Award for 2 nd October are Koala class and Panther class. The winners of the Class Award for 16 th October are Kangaroo class and Owl class. Well done!
