1 Teacher: Birss Classroom Champions Subject: Goal Setting School Subject: Language Arts Grade: 6 Lesson Title: Archers Aim for their Goals! Lesson Objective: Review proper goal setting, have students set short term and long term academic/personal goals for themselves. Common Core/Local Standard(s): Materials Needed/Preparation: For Teacher- SMART Board, Athlete goal setting video, Camera, bow and arrow For Students- Goal planning sheet, Goal Target, pencil Lesson Introduction (Beginning): 1) Show students Brad Spence s video on goal setting. Discuss what students thought of the video. Talk about the idea of goals being in a target and relate it to the fact that our school s mascot is an Archer! 2) Discuss with students the difference between short term and long term goals 3) In Language Arts journals, have students individually brainstorm as many ideas for goals that they can in 5 minutes. 4) Have students share some of their ideas with the class and create a web of goal ideas on the SMART board. Discuss academic, athletic and personal goals. Explain that we will be creating short term goals for the end of this school year. We will be creating long term goals later on in the year. Lesson Outline/Details (Middle): 1) Go over SMART goals as a class. Use Brad s example of getting an A in class and go over the components required to successfully reach that goal. 2) Have students complete the Goal Planning Sheet individually, focusing on the elements of SMART goal planning. Their goal should be something that can be attained by the end of this school year. Have the goal approved by the teacher when complete. 3) Share goal with a friend and discuss how they can help you achieve the goal. 4) Students will take approved goal and complete their Goal Target. The student s goal will be in the center of the target with the steps required to complete it in the surrounding rings.

2 Closing/Assessment (End): Teacher will take a picture of each student aiming with a toy bow and arrow. A bulletin board of each student taking aim at their personal goals will then be created using the Goal Targets and the pictures. Assessment will include completion of goal worksheet and target, the quality of the goal (does it fit with SMART goal setting), as well as overall participation in the lesson.

M - Medal Worthy Is this goal worth your time, is it something you REALLY, REALLY want? A - Actions What actions, steps do you need to take to complete this goal? R - Realistic Is this goal real for you? Is it something YOU can actually complete? T - Timely How much time will it take to complete this goal? BE REALISTIC! Rewrite your goal: Make sure you include: (Check them off once you have them!) The goal you are trying to reach (be specific) The actions (Steps) you need to take to complete your goal The amount of time it will take to complete your goal Final Goal: _. Name: Date:
