1 Romeo and Juliet Act 1 Summary Scene opens in the streets of where two of Capulet s men ( and ) discuss the tension between their lord and lord. During their discussion they notice and, two of Montague s men. After a little prodding, Sampson gets Gregory to start an argument with the Montagues. A fight breaks out between the men, causing all of the people in the streets to begin fighting. tries to stop the fight, but is attacked by. The Prince arrives with his men and breaks up the fight. He announces that if anyone from either house disturbs the peace once more, they will be. After the fight, Benvolio is sent to find. Romeo has been brooding all morning because the love of his life,, does not love him anymore. He cannot imagine how he can ever find joy, happiness, or love without her. Benvolio tries to cheer-up Romeo. During their conversation, a servant walks by and asks if they could read the note that he is carrying. The note is actually a list of people that are invited to Capulet s house for a party. Benvolio, seeing Rosaline s name on the list, persuades Romeo to go to the party and compare Rosaline s with the other women at the party, basically telling Romeo that there is more than one woman in the world.

2 Scene begins at the House of. The has raised since she was born, as was the custom for most births of royalty or nobles. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that, a young count and cousin of the Prince, wishes to marry Juliet. Juliet is told that she will meet him at the party that night, and she is asked if she can like him. She states that she will try if that is what they want her to do. Later that evening, Romeo, Benvolio,, and around five or six other men are making their way to the party. Mercutio tends to be a joker, and he makes fun of Romeo because of his attitude about. Romeo then says he that it wasn t a good idea to go to the party. Mercutio then says that dreams, and he begins a long speech about dreams. The speech becomes so strange that Romeo stops him and tells Mercutio that he speaks nonsense. The group attends the party, but while they are there, recognizes Romeo. He wants to kill Romeo, but Capulet refuses. As long as he is there and causing no trouble, Tybalt is to leave him alone because Capulet doesn t want. It isn t long before Romeo sees, and all thoughts of Rosaline vanish. The two exchange words and are instantly attracted to one another. Of course, as the guests leave, both Romeo and Juliet learn that each have fallen in love with their.

3 Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Summary Scene begins after the party, when Romeo sneaks away from his friends and cousin. He hides in the below Juliet s window. Juliet appears and talks to herself about her love for. Unable to contain himself, Romeo leaps out from hiding. They talk to each other of love and each vows their love to the other. Juliet says she will send her to Romeo tomorrow, and he is to tell her when and where they. The next morning Romeo tells about his plans to. He agrees to help the two lovers because he hopes that the marriage will. Romeo meets up with and. Mercutio teases Romeo saying he left them to have sex (or maybe my mind is in the gutter, but if you read the dialog between the two, there are many sexual references). The Nurse comes soon after their dialogue, and Romeo tells her that he wants Juliet to meet her at. She agrees to tell Juliet the meeting place. In scene Juliet waits impatiently for the Nurse s return. When the Nurse arrives, she doesn t tell Juliet the news right away, teasing Juliet, but she finally tells her the details of the plan. Juliet meets Romeo and Friar Laurence in scene.

4 Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Summary, and the other men speak of how unusually hot the day is which can often cause people to anger quicker than usual, and example of. Soon and some other Capulets confront Mercutio asking if he knows where Romeo is hiding. Romeo soon enters and Tybalt challenges him to a duel, but Romeo refuses saying. Romeo becomes so enraged that he, eventually killing him. Seeing that the Nurse will not help her, Juliet lies and says to tell her mother that she is going to Laurence s cell for confession because she disobeyed her father.

6 Romeo and Juliet Act 4 Summary tells that he is marrying Juliet on of that week. Paris enters the room and asks Juliet to admit to Friar Lawrence that she loves him. Juliet does say (4.1. ) but it is she is talking about. Paris leaves and Juliet is finally able to express her grief and feelings of helplessness: she must marry on Thursday, but cannot do so lawfully because she is already secretly married to, and in love with,. Juliet asks the Friar to help her, and he comes up with a plan. He gives her a that will make it appear as if she has. It will last for hours, giving her family time to lay her body in the Capulet vault. After the time has passed, she will awake in the tomb. In the meantime, Friar Lawrence will so he can be there to let her out of the tomb. Juliet agrees to the desperate plan, takes the from Friar Lawrence and returns home. In scene, Juliet, now at home, acts as if nothing is wrong and continues to make the others believe she is preparing to marry Paris. While everyone is busy with the wedding preparations, Juliet dismisses and her. After drinking the poison, Juliet fears the plan will not work, and as insurance, lays a beside her, so that if she does awaken in the morning, she can

7 . She begins to think of the horrors of the Capulet vault and the bodies and spirits that will be in there, fearing that if she wakes up there it might be so horrifying that she becomes. Act 4, scene takes place the next morning. When comes to wake her up for her wedding day, she finds Juliet s seemingly lifeless body. The household becomes chaotic, and the arrival of Paris is met with sorrow, as tells him that Juliet has died.

8 Romeo and Juliet Act 5 Summary While Romeo waits in, his servant,, comes and tells him that he saw Juliet being placed in the Capulet tomb. Romeo tells him he cannot believe she is dead. After dismissing his servant, Romeo visits an and buys a poison that will kill him instantly if it is taken. Romeo then goes against the Prince s command, and leaves for to see if the news of Juliet s death is true. In scene, Friar Laurence meets, the messenger he had asked to bring a letter of the plan to Romeo. He tells Friar Lawrence that he encountered on his journey and was. Knowing that there is only hours until awakens, Friar Lawrence heads to the tomb so that he can meet Juliet when she and help her escape to to be with Romeo. Unfortunately, Romeo gets to the tomb before Friar Lawrence and encounters. The two fight and kills. Romeo enters the tomb and sees Juliet. Believing that she truly is he drinks the poison and dies instantly. - arrives at the tomb too late and sees Romeo dead on the floor beside, who then awakens to find Romeo dead beside her. The town guards can be heard in the distance, and fearing Friar Lawrence leaves Juliet, saying (.. ). Juliet,

9 devastated to find Romeo dead, immediately decides to but when she tries to drink from the flask that held the poison, finds that it is empty. Hearing the approaching in the distance, takes Romeo s and.,, and the Prince arrive. explains everything that has happened. Montague and Capulet finally see how much damage their feuding has done so they decide to, and build.
