BIOLOGICAL and BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

BIOLOGICAL and BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES So you are interested in studying Biological and Biomedical Sciences... why choose Strathclyde? Our courses in Biological and Biomedical Sciences will provide you with an excellent foundation in cell and molecular bioscience. You will also develop the transferable skills that are in great demand by a wide variety of employers, not only preparing you for a career in science but also in business, finance, management, media, and more. Strathclyde is unique in Scotland in offering five joint Honours degrees allowing you to combine two subject options, or you can study for our Biomedical Science degree which is accredited by the Institute for Biomedical Science. Our range of courses means you can tailor your degree into specialist areas or opt for a general degree that allows you to gain knowledge and skills in a number of relevant areas. What choices are on offer? We offer the following four-year BSc joint Honours and Biomedical Science degrees: Biochemistry & Pharmacology Biochemistry & Immunology Immunology & Pharmacology Immunology & Microbiology Biochemistry & Microbiology Biomedical Science

What options do our degree courses offer? Our degrees are designed to maximise your career options when you graduate and to give you flexibility should you decide to shift direction at a later stage of your career. Plus, Strathclyde gives you the advantage of flexibility in your choice of final degree specialisation, allowing you to delay this decision until third year. This flexibility also means that you can join us in second or third year should you gain the appropriate qualifications from another Higher Education Institution, including HNC or HND in Biomedical Science, Applied Bioscience or a related course. The folowing five-year Integrated Master s (MSci) degrees are also available: Biochemistry Immunology Microbiology Pharmacology Transfer to the MSci degree may be possible at the end of the Year 4, subject to performance. Who teaches the courses? The courses are run by the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. Some are run in collaboration with the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry and the Centre for Forensic Science. The research interests of our academic staff cover many different areas of the Biomedical Sciences: Immunology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Microbiology. Strong research and industrial links ensure that course information is kept up-to-date with useful and relevant experience.

What is the course structure of the course I m interested in? The curriculum for the first two years is the same for all of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences degree courses. This means you can defer your ultimate choice of degree until the end of Year 2, or join one of these courses in Year 2 or Year 3 from another qualifying degree course. In first year you will undertake introductory classes in Bioscience, Chemistry and Statistics. Bioscience topics include: Cellular Structure and Function Inheritance Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Microbial and Plant Bioscience Physiology Statistics for Bioscience You also choose two elective subjects from other Departments within the University. These can range from Entrepreneurship to Introductory Astronomy. I chose Strathclyde for its central location in Glasgow and its reputation in the biological sciences. My course puts real emphasis on the practical skills that employers look for. It s been a great starting point to work in a laboratory-based research environment, which I hope to do when I graduate. Jennifer Baird BSc (Honours) Immunology and Pharmacology

In second year you have further classes in Biosciences including: Molecular and Cell Biology Genetics Nutrition and Metabolism Introductory Medical Microbiology Immunology Pharmacology Human Physiology You also take Organic Chemistry. In third and fourth year you specialise according to the degree(s) in which you plan to graduate. More details of what you study in third and fourth years for specific degree combinations are listed on our website. The MSci degrees follow the same curriculum as one of the Joint Honours degrees in Years 1 to 4, then specialise in their chosen subject in year 5. If I change my mind after starting my course, can I transfer into any other course offered by the Institute? Transfer between degrees, except into Biomedical Scinece, is possible up to the end of Year 2. You can also transfer between the MSci degrees in Years 1 and 2, but transfer into the MSci degrees can only take place at the end of Year 4 from one of the joint Honours degrees, subject to performance. Will I be able to get a work placement or study abroad? If you are studying any of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences degrees, you can gain valuable experience by taking part in lab-based research or an industrial research placement between your third and fourth year. In addition, final-year students can take part in Enterprise Projects. These are projects of commercial significance for a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company in the West of Scotland. Study abroad is possible through the Socrates/Erasmus student exchange programmes. Teaching and Assessment You will have around 240 hours of lectures, tutorials and labs per year in Years 1-3. In the Honours (fourth) Year, you will carry out a research project in one of your specialisations and write this up as a short thesis. Assessment methods include multiplechoice tests, computer quizzes, problem solving scenarios, poster and oral presentations, essays, and formal written exams.

Careers With a Strathclyde degree in Biological and Biomedical Sciences you could find yourself working anywhere from a laboratory to a field, from a hospital to a processing plant. You could be involved in drug development, food processing, protecting the environment, fighting disease or even slowing the ageing process. Graduates have found jobs in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, hospitals and public health laboratories, analytical and forensic science labs and the scientific civil service. Others are employed with the Scottish Government, Scottish Water, Strathclyde Police and the NHS. Employers in Scotland include scientific and pharmaceutical companies such as Invitrogen and Bioreliance, Hycorp Pharmaceutical and Quintiles. However, you can work anywhere in the world and our graduates have found positions in the US, Canada and Australia. Contact For specific enquiries concerning the Biological and Biomedical Science courses, please contact: Academic Selector (Biomedical Sciences) Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences t: e: Find out more... visit the University website at Recent graduates are working in a variety of positions including Medical Technical Officers, Quality Control Officers, Report Writers and Laboratory Technicians. Some of our graduates go on to become Biomedical Scientists or Clinical Biochemists. The BSc degree in Biomedical Science is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science as a recognised programme for the education of Biomedical Scientists. Others are pursuing careers in scientific research in universities, research institutes and hospitals, or have undertaken further study in areas such as business, science, medicine and engineering. the place of useful learning University of Strathclyde Glasgow G1 1XQ Information current at August Please consult the University website for the most up-to-date information.
