Agenda Journal of International Marketing Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda 2
Objective and Scope Journal of International Marketing is an international, quarterly journal that is dedicated to advancing international marketing practice, research, and theory through the publication of scholarly and managerially relevant articles. The journal's prime objective is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in international marketing. In the Journal of International Marketing, international marketing is conceptualized within two general domains: (1) international (i.e., when marketing activities occur across national boundaries) and (2) cross-cultural (i.e., when comparisons regarding marketing-related issues are made across national boundaries). 3
Journal Stats Ranking Second to the Journal of Marketing (Hult et al. 2009) Top 5 International Business (DuBios and Reeb 2000) SSCI 5 year impact factor 1.56 Submissions/Acceptance Rate Approximately 150 submission per year 156 new submissions from July 1, 2007-June 30, new submissions from July 1, 2008-June 30, % acceptance rate (over 70% after R&R) Author-centered review process Constructive reviews Timely reviews 45 days: new submission 29 days: revisions

Open Calls Call for Conceptual Articles 8 The greatest advances in international marketing thought often begin with novel, insightful and carefully crafted conceptual articles that challenge the conventional wisdom. Call for Review Articles To effectively advance the international marketing literature it is critical to understand the current state of knowledge and provide guidance for a path that can advance international marketing thought. As such we encourage the submission of articles that work to review relevant international marketing areas and that provide a path for knowledge development.
Wanted for Submission Innovative New and insightful Non-iterative Impactful Moving the field forward Challenging the status quo Creative Imaginative ways of looking at problems New and rigorous approaches to international marketing problems 9
Online Submission Manuscript Central 10
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Selecting a topic Appropriateness of topic Define contribution Replications and contribution Research standards Discussion Implications 11
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Selecting a topic Why is this topic important at this time? How does the topic fit into the literature? How does the topic fit into your target journal? Test the idea with others (interesting or or timely) Go through the submission screens at at the target journal looking to to see where your topic will fit fit (which boxes would you check?) Realize that topics important to to IB IB journals and functional journals can be be very different 12 Do not use journal Table of of Contents as as a guide
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Appropriateness of Topic International, i.e., when marketing activities occur across national boundaries Cross-cultural, i.e., when comparisons regarding marketing related issues are made across national boundaries Framing what is is not international as as international is is not a great idea for for international-oriented journals Recognize the difference between an an international journal and a journal that focuses on on international research 13
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Define Contribution Clearly define what differentiates your research from the literature Motivating your contribution from a theoretical perspective is often the key to gaining support for your work from the editor and reviewers Realize that your framing of of the contribution determines to to a great degree who are the reviewers Reviewers are experts within certain areas and operate within the standards of of those areas 14
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Replications and Contribution Replications are seldom viewed as substantive contributions in the eyes of the editor or the reviewers It is important that authors carefully develop their international work to not replicate, but rather extend the extant literature Too much international business research offers little new than context Cross-cultural studies without comparison data is is in in a poor position 15
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Research Standards Method appropriate for question Method must meet current standards for single country study Method must meet current standards for international study International research is is often held to to a different standard when submitted to to functional area journals 16 Many reviewers have never dealt personally with data from multiple countries and therefore believe that what is is written can always be be done
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Discussion What themes are drawn from your results? How do your results contribute to the theory, and the literature in the area? Avoid the rehash of of the results and work toward finding interesting themes that derive from your research Avoid disappearing theory, instead focus on on how your research builds on on extant work and how your work can serve as as a foundation for for future work 17
Keys to Advancing Your International Research Agenda Implications Journal readership consists not only of academics, but also includes a relatively large segment of practitioners A key criterion for manuscript acceptance will be that the study should ultimately influence how international managers operate or think about interacting in or across national markets What does your research really change? 18
Thank you. I look forward to your submissions. Questions? Comments? griffith@bus.msu.edu 19 jim@ama.org
