Homework; a message to Parents It can make a big difference if you take an active part in your child s work at home. Here are a few things to consider which may help things to run smoothly. Read through the next few pages together so that everyone knows what is expected. Ensure that homework is done each evening. If you are told that the work has been done at school or there was no homework then it may be worth investigating further. Homework must not be done during lunch time, break time or Group Base. Only those students who use the homework room after school should have already done the work. Provide a suitable place for homework to be done. A quiet room, a bedroom for example, with a desk and good lighting is ideal. A place where books and work need not be cleared away after each session is a bonus. Homework will be done better without the distractions of background noise, such as loud music. Discourage working in front of the television. Encouragement, interest and support are all welcome, but never do the work yourself! If your child is having genuine difficulties, then it is much more useful to seek help from a teacher who can then decide where the problem lies. Let your child s tutor know of the problem and they will do their best to help sort it out.

If there is a genuine reason why homework cannot be completed on time, then please write a note to the tutor. Check that the homework diary is kept up to date. It should give details of homework for every day, and it may help to make sure that the work done matches the homework timetable that has been provided. Try to encourage Friday homework to be done on Friday evenings, so as to leave time for other activities on Saturday and Sunday. Once a fortnight there will be a reading homework to do over the weekend and there may occasionally be work to do for Extended Studies. Avoid the Sunday night homework blues if at all possible. Do not put undue pressure on your son or daughter. They are young with a lot to learn and they will make mistakes. Trying to get away with doing the minimum amount of work is not good enough, but equally it is not necessary to spend every waking hour working. Balance and moderation are essential. Homework should not become a major issue causing tension and pressure in the family, since everyone will suffer as a result. Firm but quiet insistence on homework routine should help to avoid problems. Try to ensure that homework is completed by 9pm at the very latest, and that everything is organised for the following morning before bedtime. Some time for relaxation is essential before going to bed. Working into the wee small hours is not going to help in the long run. Tired pupils cannot work at their full capacity, so please ensure that bedtimes are not too late during the week.

There will be examinations in June and pupils will be expected to do some revision during the summer half term break. Please bear this in mind when organising holidays.

Homework; a message to pupils At school Use your homework diary properly. Always write down the details of ALL homework, and make sure that you have all the information that you will need. Ask for help if you are unclear about anything. Make sure that you take home the correct books and notes for the homework. Using a folder for each subject may help you keep everything together. At home Relax. Have a rest, eat if you are hungry and change into comfortable clothes. Try to get into the right frame of mind for your work. Have a regular starting time; maybe about half an hour after you arrive home. Once you ve started and made headway it will not seem such a chore. Your homework in the First Year will take about an hour, so you may want to have a break half way through. You might want to watch TV or perhaps have your dinner, before going back to your work. When you have completed all your work, pack your bag ready for the morning. Check your timetable to make sure that you have everything you need for the next day.

You should aim to complete the homework set each day on the same evening. Do not leave work until it piles up and becomes a problem. There will often be time to seek help with problems before the deadline if you attempt work early. You will not be able to produce your best work if you do not plan ahead or if everything is done in a rush at the last minute. Homework is necessary and should be done well, and with a little organisation it can be part of a normal routine rather than a headache. Hopefully, a few of the suggestions here will help to establish this routine as quickly as possible. Remember; no excuses!
