Page 1 Easy Peasy Fabric Butterflies (An exclusive project for CraftyPod Newsletter subscribers. Because you're awesome.) O nce you have the process down, you can make one of these little beauties in less than ten minutes. (I know this because I timed myself. Yes, perhaps I do need to get out more.) This project is a great way to use up small fabric scraps, and it's easy for seamsters of all levels. At the end of the how-to, you ll find a whole bunch of ways to use them. You ll Need: Scraps of woven cotton fabric Scissors Rotary cutter and ruler (optional) Sewing machine and thread Iron and Ironing board Chopstick or dull pencil 3" (7.5 cm) length of pipe cleaner 4" (10 cm) length of craft or floral wire Wire cutters Needle-nose pliers
Page 2 Step 1: Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 3 x 4 1/4" (7.5 x 11 cm). Cut two more pieces measuring 2 x 3 1/4" (5 x 8.25 cm). I'm using different fabrics here, but you can also cut your pieces from the same fabric. (Also, you can size these up or down as you like!) Step 2: Put two same-size pieces together with right sides facing. Sew around all four sides, leaving about a 2" gap in one long side, as shown. Repeat this process with the other two pieces of fabric. (Note: I'm using contrasting thread for visibility here. You'll probably want to use coordinating thread.) Step 3: In a moment, we'll turn these babies right side out. But first, here are two little tricks that will make your rectangles turn out smoother and sharper. First, clip off all four corners, being careful not to cut any of your stitching. Then, press the seam allowances open. The way I do this is to simply fold down the seam allowance of the top layer of fabric, and press it toward the center, as shown here.
Page 3 Step 4: Now, turn both pieces right side out. Poke a chopstick or a dull pencil into the corners so they're nice and pointy. Pointy corners are always good. Step 5: Now, press the two rectangles nice and flat. (Turn the raw edges where your opening was to the inside and press them. There's no need to stitch these openings closed, by the way.) Fold each rectangle in half crosswise and press a crease to mark the center, as shown here. Step 6: Place the two rectangles together as shown here. The larger one should overlap the smaller one by about 1/4" to 1/2". Match the center creases and pin them if you like. Also, make sure those openings in the rectangles are placed as follows: The opening in the large rectangle should be along the bottom edge. The opening in the small rectangle should be along the top edge.
Page 4 Step 7: Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine to its longest length. Starting at the top of the large rectangle, sew a gathering stitch along the crease line. This seam will also attach the two rectangles together. Backstitch at the bottom of the seam to lock it in place. Leave some long threads at the top. Step 8: Pull on one of these long threads to gather the butterfly wings. Adjust the gathers along the whole length of the seam, so both wings are gathered evenly. Step 9: Tie the two long ends of thread into a double knot to lock the gathers in place. Then, trim away the excess thread.
Page 5 Step 10: Time to make a body! Fold a 3" length of pipe cleaner at a 90- degree angle in the center, as shown. Step 11: Take a 4" length of wire. Place it beneath the pipe cleaner as shown. Visually center the wire under the pipe cleaner. We're about to make antennae! Step 12: Take the right-hand side of the wire in your fingers and bend it over the front of the pipe cleaner. It should now be sticking out on the left side, as shown here. Step 13: Take the left-hand side of the wire in your fingers and bend it over the front of the pipe cleaner. It should now be sticking out on the right side. So, just to recap, you have the wire wrapped around the back of the pipe cleaner, and crossing over the front. This funny little wrap will keep the wire from flopping around in the finished butterfly.
Page 6 Step 14: Now, insert your finished wings, right side facing up, into the center of the bent pipe cleaner. Step 15: Fold the pipe cleaner flat over the fabric. I usually give the wings a little "scrunch" here, too, so they get a little extra gather. Twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together tightly - you may find that needle-nose pliers make this step easy. Step 16: Bend the antennae as you like, and finish them off by making a little loop in each end with the needle-nose pliers. And you're done!
Page 7 Using Your Butterflies You can glue on a pin-back for an easy brooch. Make them smaller and you can glue one to a barrette or headband. Use them to embellish lampshades, pillows, and curtains. Add a thread loop and hang them on a plant or group of bare branches. String a bunch of them into a garland. Sew a group of them to a Summer handbag. Glue them to shoe clips and dress up your sandals. Use them as package toppers - better yet, make a brooch and then use it as a package topper. These butterflies have a nice back side, too - so you can use them in things like mobiles, where both sides are visible.
