3 OUR UNIVERSITIES Peking University students may choose Chinese as a foreign language for exchange, International Summer School for short-term experience, MBA, LLM etc for degree seeking Renmin University of China students may choose Chinese as a foreign language, English taught courses in the fields of business, law, economics. International Summer School

4 OUR UNIVERSITIES Fudan University students may be enrolled in semester exchange in Chinese language programs undergraduate program taught in English master programs taught in English short-term mobility in International Summer Session and other summer schools like language summer school

5 OUR UNIVERSITIES Wuhan University students may choose Chinese as a foreign language, International MBA and International Law taught in English, among several other programs The Chinese University of Hong Kong students may choose courses from various faculties to match their study plan

6 CIMO S PROJECT IN University of Helsinki together with Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Wuhan University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong Building on the strong background of long-term, well-functioning partnerships with all the participating universities The project provides funding for ways of implementation of postgraduate student mobility on university level and supports teacher and researcher mobility which is linked directly to postgraduate student mobility, emphasizing the synergy between the two. Exchanges will take place in both directions: from mainland China to Finland and Finland to mainland China.

7 THIS SESSION IS ABOUT STUDENT EXCHANGE What efforts have Chinese universities recently done to ensure that international students are well integrated into the daily life on campus?

8 OUTGOING STUDENTS FROM FINLAND Orientation of the incoming exchange students - CUHK has 40 student ambassadors helping in the orientation, all of them are returned exchange students who went abroad (CUHK exchange students are recommended to undertake 20 hours of voluntary work while on exchange or involve in the incoming student activities in CUHK - The student ambassadors provide practical information to incoming exchange students, conduct campus tour and take the students on voluntary trips to nearby neighborhood for grocery shopping

9 OUTGOING STUDENTS FROM FINLAND Orientation of the incoming exchange students Interesting Offer on the Orientation at WHU. Guided tour of the city: Tourist attractions; Home to Citizens, a local government agency, where you will deal with visa issues and get to know the city development plan up to 2020.

10 OUTGOING STUDENTS FROM FINLAND Buddy projects in all our universities - Both incoming exchange students and returned CUHK exchange students are invited to join the buddy pro programme where students from the same institutions/region would be matched they can selfarrange activities, meetings mutually agreed - Roommate Program from Renmin University aimed exclusively for language emersion.(characteristics matching, language commitment, field trip, cultural activities, life-long friendship)

13 OUTGOING STUDENTS FROM FINLAND Campus culture - CUHK s college system where each exchange student shares a room with a local student - In mainland China, the universities would arrange annual international cultural activities, such as festivals, singing competitions, talent shows, etc. - Finnish students may find it difficult to get adjusted to curfews and/or restrictions about having visitors demand flexibility from the incoming exchange student that is also a part of integration!

15 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Prior to exchange PKU invites the nominated students to take part in official visits (for example, the host university s president s visit to PKU) -> making the students feel like part of their host country At Fudan, representatives of Shanghai Education Commission were invited to provide extra information for students customs of the host countries Finnish consulate in HK is very active in organising events and creating linkages between the outgoing and incoming students and helping introduce Finland to the outgoing students

16 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Strong focus on studies I plan to apply for the PhD study in Europe after graduation, therefore this exchange will help me well prepare for the study and living in Europe. Before I finally decide whether to study for a master's degree abroad or not,i want to experience the English courses and totally different cultural surroundings, then I can see if I can adapt to it. The students need to bring back very good grades from Finland.

17 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Need to develop independent skills I want to experience the life of an exchange student. Maybe, there are difficulties at first when I have to manage all the things myself, however, it also gives me precious lessons for it teaches me independence and persistence which will benefit me not only in study but also in daily life. Do you we, as a university, offer support for this? Usually independent decision making skills are mentioned as one of the skills learnt in Finland by the soon-returning students

18 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Need to show evidence of academic merit after exchange During college, I obtained academic scholarships every year, including Peking University Graduate Scholarship, Peking University All-round Good Student Award etc.. Also, I passed the Chinese Bar Examination with flying colors. Do you we, as a university, offer enough chances for this? Science competitions, volunteer activities, membership in research groups? Important for students when they seek further exchange opportunities and employment

19 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Different expectations for free-time There are always some invitation about parties sent to our mailbox, but those parties didn't seem to be popular for us. the cultural events such as dance classes, canoeing and outings for people interested in meeting new people or learning about Finnish culture are fun, easy and interactive. We prefer them rather than the parties Similar to all our universities: very active student organisations and clubs - > doing more effort to introduce the possibilities offered by the clubs for the incoming students?

20 INCOMING STUDENTS TO FINLAND Different goals for exchange experience CUHK s students choose their destinations based on different goals. Some of them are determined to take part in a programme which offers similar courses for their major studies in order to better prepare for their future studies or research career. Some students prefer taking elective courses in order to spend more time for the cultural part of the exchange programme. They are always encouraged to have a broader view to accept new challenges and balance their study and leisure time.
