QuickSearch QuickSearch is a service which enables you to find, in a single search, print books and other materials physically located in your college library, such as CDs, DVDs, and videos, as well as ebooks, e-journal articles, and streaming multimedia. In addition to searching your library catalog and various databases which DCC subscribes to, QuickSearch also searches such sources as Project Gutenberg, the Public Library of Science, The Directory of Open Access Journals, and Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard. QuickSearch is available on the e-library page at When you access QuickSearch, you will be taken by default to the Basic or Simple search page, displayed below. Please note that QuickSearch will automatically time out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Note that in the boxes to the right of Show me, you have the following search options: Type of items: You can search for all items, or specify that you want to search for just books, articles, or multimedia. Search words: You can search with my search words, with my exact phrase, or that begin with. Place in record: You can search for your search words anywhere in the record, as author/creator, in the title, or in the subject. In the search displayed on the following page, a search is conducted for global warming, searching for the words as an exact phrase in the subject and the search is conducted for all types of items.
Results are sorted by relevance by default. You can also arrange your results by date (in descending order, with the most recent items at the top), by popularity, by author, or by title. Popularity is calculated by use. This means that the more an item record has been clicked and viewed, the more popular it is. To change the way in which your results are displayed, click the blue down arrow to the right of Sorted by. Notice that you can further refine your results by selecting the options that are on the left side of the page. For example, you can refine your results by resource type (articles, books, etc.), genre, publication date, database, journal title, author, subject, or language. At the bottom of the page you will see a link to Suggested New Searches. For example, suggested other searches on this subject include Climate Change and Greenhouse Effect.
An icon appears to the left of each search result, indicating whether the item is a book, an article, a video, etc. One of the books in the DCC library collection which deals with global warming is entitled The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming, by Laurie David and Cambria Gordon. When you click on the book icon, it brings up the Details page for this record. The Details page displays the item s full record and provides additional links, shown on the right side of the page. For example, if you select This item in the Library Catalog, you will be taken to the Full View of the Record in the online catalog. Notice the Send to link above the Links box. When you select the down arrow by Send to you are given the option to print the record, to the record, or to add it to your e-shelf. The Locations tab provides information on the collection (location) the title belongs to, the LC call number, and the status of the item (whether it is on the shelf or if it is checked out). If the
item is checked out, you will see an Out of Library note at the top of the Locations page and under Status the date the item is due will be displayed. If the item is on the shelf, you will see Available on the top of the page. Note that the information found within the Locations tab is also available on the initial item record page. QuickSearch also enables users to write reviews of titles and to provide tags for items. Tags are words or phrases that you can assign to items to help you organize and remember them. You can assign as many tags to an item as you like. You must sign in to QuickSearch with your mydcc user name and password in order to write reviews or create tags. Click on the link to Sign in located at the upper right corner of the page.
E-books are also available on QuickSearch. In the example shown below, the book Jane Eyre: portrait of a life, is available in two versions. The first version is a print book, located in the DCC Library s circulating collection. The second version is an e-book. You see online access indicated under the title for the second record, and the title is highlighted in blue. Click on the title to access the e-book. When you select the Locations tab for this e-book, it indicates VCCS Internet Internet Books Online Access.
QuickSearch can also be searched for journal articles. A list of journal articles is shown on the next page. Notice that at the end of each citation a note in parentheses indicates if the article is from a peer reviewed journal. There is also a link at the top of the results list which you can select if you only want to look at articles from peer reviewed journals. A note in green indicates if full text is available for the article. Click on View Online to display the article. When you select the Details tab, you will be given a description of the article. Notice that you also see a Recommendations tab for some articles. The Recommendations tab displays additional articles, which are based on searches that were performed by users that have also viewed the article you have selected. A note at the top of the Recommendations box indicates that Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following articles. Click on the red button with an S inside it (the link resolver) to see if you can be linked to the full text of a recommended article.
One of the advantages which QuickSearch offers to searchers is the way it handles duplicate records. QuickSearch combines duplicate records from the library s system into a single integrated record. By de-duplicating records in this way, QuickSearch provides significantly less duplication of records within the search results, making search results easier to understand and to navigate. In the example displayed below, a search was conducted for all items with The Color Purple in the title. QuickSearch indicates that Multiple Versions exist for this title (see the second record). Click on View 3 Versions to see the different versions of this title in the DCC Library s collection.
Multiple Versions Shown below are the results when View 3 versions is selected. The results indicate that The Color Purple is available in both video and book format in the DCC library collection.
Advanced Searches As discussed previously, when you enter QuickSearch you are taken to the Basic or Simple Search page. Clicking on Advanced Search provides some additional search options. For example, you can refine your search by Publication Date (last year, last 2 years, last 5 years, last 10 years, or last 20 years). Within Material Type you can specify that you d like to search for images. You can also limit your search by language (English, French, or German).
Signing In to QuickSearch By signing in to QuickSearch with your mydcc user name and password, you can perform a variety of special functions. For example, you can save items that you have found and place them in your e-shelf. When you select the Star icon for an item in the search results, the system highlights the icon and adds the item to the Basket folder in the e-shelf. Signing in to QuickSearch enables you to permanently save items to your e-shelf. (If you do not sign in, the items you place in the e-shelf as a Guest will not be saved when you exit QuickSearch). Click on Star to add item to the e-shelf. By signing in, you can also save search queries that you have performed for future use. You can activate alerts on your saved search queries to have them run automatically at scheduled times to provide you via with updated results from your queries. You can also activate RSS feeds to receive updates for your favorite queries. For information on these topics and for assistance in searching on QuickSearch, click the Help link located in the upper right corner of the search page. Additional information on QuickSearch is provided on the QuickSearch 101 page made available by the VCCS at:
