What do we remember of Christopher Columbus s accomplishments? Standards of Learning: History SOL: The student will: SS 1.3 Study the life of a person associated with Columbus Day. SS 1.4a Develop map skills by recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land and water. English SOL: The student will: 1.9g Read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction by retelling the story, using beginning, middle, and end. 1.12b Write to communicate ideas focusing on one topic. Lesson Objectives Content: The student will: 1. Identify that Christopher Columbus is honored on Columbus Day because he is given credit for discovering the Americas. 2. Explain that Columbus was commissioned by Spain to find a route to the Indies, and that he sailed three ships - Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Process: The student will: 1. Read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction through teacher directed reading, thinking activities while retelling the story using beginning, middle, and end. 2. Complete a shape book demonstrating understanding of the explorations of Christopher Columbus. Materials: Tradebook: Spencer, Eve. Three Ships for Columbus, Steck-Vaughn Company, ISBN: Handout #1-#3 Picture of Christopher Columbus, Ship, and Map of Spain Handout #4 Mini book (1 per student) Handout #5 Shape book pattern and lined writing paper cut to shape. Handout #6 Scroll (Extension activity) Handout #7 Song Columbus First Voyage transparency (Extension activity)

2 Assessment/Evaluation: The teacher will: 1. Observe student participation during the teacher-guided reading of Three Ships for Columbus. 2. Evaluate drawings and content in the mini book summary of the story. 3. Grade students summaries using beginning, middle, and end based on knowledge gained during the reading of Three Ships for Columbus. Lesson Procedure Background Knowledge/Purpose Setting: The teacher will: 1. Share pictures of Christopher Columbus and a ship similar to those sailed as well as a map of the country Spain from where he sailed. 2. Begin a KWL chart during a pre-reading discussion of Christopher Columbus. 3. Display a world map and point out the East Indies where Columbus was trying to get and Spain where he began his trip. 4. Discuss possible routes to reach the East Indies. Before Reading: The teacher will: 1. Model how to retell a story pointing to events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end. 2. Explain the mini book to be completed after reading Three Ships for Columbus. During Reading: The teacher will: Day 1: 1. Read Three Ships for Columbus and use Think Aloud Strategies. Model how to identify important events by asking questions like, What happens in the beginning of the story? What does Christopher Columbus believe about the world? What does he want to do? 2. Have students participate in a class discussion to complete KWL chart and listen to the reading of Three Ships for Columbus. Day 2: 1. Discuss the four main events from the story identifying what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. Use the four events from the mini book to model retelling the story. Divide class into partners. 2. Have students discuss the four main events from the story and use them to retell the story. They will then draw pictures in their mini book to correspond with the event listed in the box. They will use the mini book to retell the story to a partner. After Reading: The teacher will: Day 1: Review and complete the L column of the KWL Chart and demonstrate on a wall map the route Columbus took and the land he discovered. Day 2: Distribute shape book of Columbus s ship and corresponding writing paper. Review how to choose events that happened in the beginning middle and end of the story. Closure: Students will write a retelling of the story Three Ships for Columbus in the shape book using events from the beginning, middle and end. (4-5 sentences)

3 Extension/Differentiation: The student could: 1. Use the scroll handout to write an announcement of what Columbus found after reaching the Americas. 2. Display transparency of the song Columbus First Voyage and sing with students.
