Pictures at Graduation In order to insure the appropriate dignity for the graduation ceremony and provide an unobstructed view for guests, photographers from the audience are being asked to take pictures from their seats. Members of the audience will not be permitted in or near the senior section or stage area. Video cameras are allowed only in the bleachers, not on the main floor of the gym. A professional photographer will take pictures of each senior as his/her diploma is awarded. The photographer will send the graduate a proof with a return envelope for ordering. Graduation Tickets Admission to graduation is by ticket only. Each graduating senior will receive ten (10) tickets to the graduation ceremony. Seniors and their parents who have good reason for extra tickets to the graduation ceremony are asked to complete a request form (in the main office) and submit the form to Mrs. Laulis in the main office. All requests must be submitted no later than Friday, May 27, Tickets will be distributed on June 7, 2016 at the end of the first graduation practice at Century High School. All detention and financial obligations must be fulfilled before a graduating senior receives his or her tickets. Tickets must be given to all guests. Ushers cannot hold tickets for arriving guests. Handicapped and Hearing-Impaired Seating and Parking at Graduation: There will be special seating for the handicapped and hearing impaired. A special pass is required for this area. Handicapped parking is located near the Physical Education Learning Center at McDaniel College for cars with a State Handicap Permit. To request handicapped/hearing-impaired reserved seating, complete and return the form in this packet. Seating in these specified areas will be by reserved passes ONLY. Handicapped seating passes are limited to two guests. Participation in Graduation Exercises Seniors and their parents are reminded that only seniors who have met all graduation requirements are entitled to participate in graduation ceremonies. Students and parents with concerns about meeting requirements are encouraged to contact the student s guidance counselor immediately. If a senior becomes ineligible to participate, we will confidentially inform the student and parent. However, in no case will the student be allowed to participate in the graduation program unless all graduation requirements have been met. Student Obligations Before students are given their tickets for graduation, their diploma, or have final school records released to colleges or employers, all outstanding detention and financial obligations must be cleared. If seniors have a question, they should check with Mrs. Laulis in the main office, Ms. Foster in the media center, their teacher, team coach, an assistant principal, or Principal Barnes. Students with unsettled detention and financial obligations will be informed at graduation practice. However, it is best to resolve these matters prior to that time. You are requested to make every effort to do so. Seniors who have not cleared 5

all obligations will receive only the diploma cover at the graduation ceremony. Diplomas for these seniors will be issued in the auxiliary gym following the ceremony once obligations are cleared. Seniors will not be given graduation tickets until all obligations are cleared. Obligations should be cleared no later than the morning of Tuesday, June 7, Guest Seating at McDaniel College Seating for graduation is on a first-come, first-served basis. No seats may be reserved. Doors to the auditorium will open 45 minutes before the graduation ceremony for guests holding a ticket for admission. All guests attending the graduation ceremony must have a ticket for admission. Please ask that your friends and family members attending the graduation ceremony be seated at least 15 minutes before the ceremony begins to avoid interference with the student processional into the ceremony. Procedure for Walking Across Stage and Receiving Diploma As you approach the stage, wait at the top step. Move forward to receive your diploma cover when your name is announced. Extend your left hand to receive the diploma cover, and then (shake hands with the Board of Education presenter with your right hand.) (Shake hands also with other school representatives who are on the stage to congratulate you on your graduation.) After Graduation Procedures/Diploma Distribution Distribution of diplomas will conform to the procedure used in all Carroll Country High Schools. Diploma covers will be presented to the graduate at the ceremony. Diplomas will be distributed immediately following the graduation ceremony to all seniors who have met all their obligations. Following the ceremony, recessional lines will proceed directly to the diploma tables located in the auxiliary gym where each graduate will receive a diploma envelope containing their diploma, report card, and other items. The diploma tables will be arranged alphabetically by students last names. If all obligations have not been cleared, your envelope will contain only a notice indicating you have an obligation to clear. Those with obligations then report to the obligations table to clear the obligation at which time you will receive your diploma. Inappropriate behavior during the graduation ceremony may result in your diploma being held until a parent conference with the Superintendent. GRADUATION ETIQUETTE AND TRADITION NAME CARDS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Obtaining name cards and announcements is the responsibility of the individual member of the class. The etiquette observed when sending announcements is included to help you. 1. Announcements are provided with an inner, ungummed envelope and an outer envelope, or with one envelope only. Either is socially correct. 2. You should address the envelope yourself, using a pen with blue or black ink. 3. The outer envelope should carry the full mailing address. Do not abbreviate Street, Road, or State. 6

4. The inner envelope should carry names only in the form you would use in conversation: Mr. and Mrs. Smith or Helen and Tom or Aunt Tillie. 5. If children are included in the announcement, list them by name on the inner envelope but not on the outer envelope unless only one envelope is used: Mr. and Mrs. Smith- Susan and Tom. 6. If the announcement does not have a personal cardholder, insert your card in the announcement with its back to the announcement engraving. 7. Insert the announcement in the inner envelope with the folded edge at the bottom and the front facing the flap. Do not tuck the flap. 8. Insert the inner envelope in the outer, with the flap of the inner envelope facing the address side of the outer envelope. 9. Seal the outer envelope neatly and send by first class mail. 10. Announcements should be mailed to arrive at their destination approximately two weeks prior to the date of graduation. CAPS AND GOWNS AT CHS Caps and gowns need to be worn for all rehearsals, as noted previously on the calendar. The Board of Education had decreed that students in Carroll County will wear both caps and gowns at graduation exercises. The changing of the tassel from the left to the right is an action that is practiced in some schools. It is properly intended to give the graduate a feeling of personal significance and mark his/her graduation. Caps should be placed on the head with the longer point of the crown to the back. The point should be centered on the forehead, with the tassel over the left temple. Tassels should never be pinned or sewed, but should be permitted to hang naturally. When properly worn, the gown should reach about 13 inches above the floor. Boys should wear white collared dress shirts, dark ties, and dark blue or black dress slacks with appropriate dark brown or black shoes. Girls should wear white shoes with an appropriate non-patterned white or light colored dress that is shorter than the gown. No jewelry or flowers should be worn on the gown. SENIORS INAPPROPRIATLY DRESSED WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. Rehearsal Requirements: Policies Affecting Seniors All seniors who are participating in graduation are REQUIRED to attend all rehearsals. Refer to the Senior Calendar of Events, in another section of this booklet, for the times and dates. Failure to attend any 7

rehearsals will lead to non-participation in the graduation ceremony. Remember that the Senior Awards Assemblies are considered rehearsals, so your attendance at these events is mandatory. Seniors who are on released time schedules are required to be at the rehearsals as scheduled. Please inform your employers of this obligation. Your attendance is essential to insure a smooth ceremony. Some topics to be covered at the rehearsal are: rules and conducts, processional and recessional order and seating, dress, school policies regarding seniors and graduation, answers to questions presented by members of this class, and ticket distribution. On each rehearsal day, seniors are required to report at the specific time. Please remember that school is still in session for the remainder of the student body. Only those seniors who have justifiable business are able to be in the classroom areas. We request that no senior return as visitors while school is still in session. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Seniors will report to the McDaniel College on Wednesday, June 8 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am for their graduation practice (Students/parents provide own transportation). Seniors are to arrive by 7:45 am. The Parents/Community Awards Night will be on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 7:00pm. Seniors are to arrive at Century in their gowns by 6:30pm and report to the main gym area. There will also be a final rehearsal at the Seniors Farewell Assembly. Seniors arrive by 8:15am. Seniors are required to remain in school and in the area of the gym until all rehearsal needs have been completed. Seniors will not be dismissed from practices early to attend appointments or to accommodate work schedules. Seniors are reminded to drive safely and sensibly when coming to practices and other senior activities. School Rules Apply To School-Sponsored Activities: We feel it is appropriate to remind seniors that many activities are taking place the weeks preceding graduation. Even though these activities (including Prom, Senior Cruise, and graduation practice at McDaniel College) are taking place off the school grounds, school rules and regulations will apply because these activities are school sponsored. Any evidence of alcohol and/or drug use or possession will be cause for dismissal from the activity and may jeopardize participation in other activities, including graduation. Students involved with unlawful activities will be suspended, law enforcement officials will be notified, and the student s participation in graduation ceremonies may be in jeopardy. Smoking is also not allowed at any of these activities by students or their guests. Tobacco violations will be dealt with following the policies of the Carroll County Public Schools and will include assignment to Saturday School for smoker s education, suspension, and/or involvement of law enforcement officials as appropriate. For instance, if students are caught smoking, consuming alcohol, or in possession of alcohol or drugs at the prom May 21, 2016, or on the Senior Cruise June 8, 2016, they may be suspended for three or five days, or more. This suspension may carry through graduation rehearsals. The student may not be allowed to participate in graduation activities if rehearsals are missed. Examinations: Senior examination dates are listed in the senior Calendar of Events. All seniors must take an examination or final culminating project as determined in each of their courses. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made. Because attendance at graduation rehearsals is critical, any make-up examinations must be arranged prior to the first graduation rehearsal. 8

Senior Show: This program will be produced by the seniors, for the seniors. It is an opportunity to laugh and reflect on your four years at Century. It will also allow your fellow seniors to share their wit and talent with you through skits, music, and other creative means. Seniors may audition to be a part of this evening. It will be a relaxed and casual evening open to friends, family, and students. Senior Assembly Community Scholarships and Parent Night: All seniors are to be in attendance at this evening assembly, which is given in honor of the graduating class. Parents are encouraged to attend. During the ceremony, seniors will be recognized for special accomplishments and will receive school and community awards. Senior Assembly School Awards and Senior Farewell: This assembly gives seniors the opportunity to appear before the student body in cap and gown to receive final honors. The assembly will begin with seniors receiving school awards for achievements within their academy and in different content areas. Seniors, under the direction of the class advisors, produce this program. It is a very powerful way of saying goodbye to one another. The Senior Farewell is a very special once-in-a-lifetime assembly for you. Graduation Ceremony Time/Date: The graduation ceremony will begin promptly at 2:00 on June 12, 2016, at McDaniel College. Doors will open at 1:15 pm (45 minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony). There will be no admittance prior to 1:15pm. Seniors should report to the Gill Gymnasium at 1:00 pm, dressed in cap and gown and ready to begin lining up for the entrance processional. Only faculty and graduating seniors will be allowed in the Gill Gymnasium. 9
