21 24. Based on your work experience, identify two or three strengths of the program. Text Response The clinical phase hours and intensity really prepared me for a working environment. The end of block testing and end of year testing was diverse and prepared me for boards. Developing a differential diagnosis and making a correct diagnosis I can access the answers to questions at a faster rate than my coworkers can Very good breadth of experience in the program. I was exceptionally well-prepared to start work. Clinical placement aided this by placing me with an organization where I now work. :) Emphasized evidence based practice. Well rounded breadth of clinical rotation sites. Knowing how to use resources to quickly look up needed information. Support for improving weaknesses and acknowledging strengths. Test prep from the program left me confident and able to pass boards. The faculty was awesome! They truly wanted all of us to succeed. The systems based curriculum was a great way to learn all of the material. The patient experience we were exposed to both during didactic and clinicals provided me with quality patient interaction skills. I am definitely confident in creating a differential diagnosis and using critical skills to determine the primary diagnosis. Teaching patient interaction, global perspectives, and general knowledge base The program prepared me for "real-world" medicine, providing me the tools to be able to effectively interact with patients and large diversity groups. I felt prepared to do more than just treat the medical problems but to treat the whole person. I also felt we were well-prepared for the other aspects of medicine such as charting, and being able to effectively negotiate salaries and navigate the system. These other schools I was exposed to through St. Kates have truly been invaluable. Quality of rotations, systems based learning Practiced clinical thinking Integrative Elective clerkship Didactic curriculum, clinical rotation quality 1. emphasis on patient center care 2. physical exams -Flexibility and accomodating to each individual student's needs -Ability to recognize the multiple different learning styles of all students within the class -Highest quality of faculty and staff. They are absolutely outstanding. Well rounded Note writing It was nice to be integrated into the clinical system from day one of school. I enjoyed the set up of the program with systems based learning. The staff are excellent, always willing to go the extra mile to help us out. I also appreciate the flexibility to change when a testing method, or project did not work out as well as expected. The program provided enough training which emphasized the knowledge and decision making skills allowing me to confidently and competently diagnose and treat patients as well as collaborate effectively with colleagues. Total Responses 18
22 25. What qualities or skills were expected of you upon employment that were not included in the program? Text Response Related to basic procedural things...such as DRE etc pharmacology knowledge Nothing comes to mind. N/a Some lab interpretation. I think it would be beneficial to practice presenting patients to hospitalits or other providers more and having a component where they ask you questions in return that you have to be ready to answer. Electronic medical records I felt very well prepared upon starting my job. I felt many of the things I had to learn were normal things to learn on the job and could not have necessarily been taught during the program. Exposure to more procedures, specialty imaging - purpose Unknown. Coding is difficult but was included. Nothing, employers and coworkers have been impressed by degree of preparation conferred by school 1. interpreting imaging 2. coding/billing N/A. I felt fully prepared for everything that was expected of me when I was first employed. I am starting in a speciality area though so I do have a large amount of additional material that I need to learn for speciality care but I was not expected to know it all prior to the start of employment. N/A None so far. I think some of the more emergent skills in practice we did not learn quite as thoroughly in school. Independence and confidence (not that these can be taught) Total Responses 17
23 26. Based on your work experience, what suggestions do you have to further strengthen the program? Text Response More standards for clinical phase - ie have to see/experience/perform certain things before graduating. For example I had never performed a DRE while in clinic rotations. I think this should have been a standard, although this would be challenging to implement there are some things as a practitioner you just need to see/do. Pharmacology and supporting the students and developing confidence to practice, I felt torn down throughout the program this did not foster my growth as a PA I would spend some additional time working on coding with specific examples and perhaps an exercise or two with them. I would also talk about cost of prescription medications and perhaps have a pharmacist discuss what medications have better coverage with insurance, differences in coverage between private plans and medicare/medicaid, etc. Refresher on procedural skills before graduation e.g. casting. More faculty to help with various tasks, although with the amount of faculty that were present I was impressed how much work they completed and very thankful. Focus on interpreting labs and learning more pharm. More specialists doing lectures on topics Continue to improve the pharmacology portion of the didactic phase, applying more pharm to critical thinking exercises, since it's one of those things that really takes thinking about it and using it to learn it. Pharmacology, physiology Overlap/interactions of systems, big picture More stress on pharmacology No month breaks between courses Less research coursework or more focused on healthcare research More opportunities for procedural practice, more mentorship with non-preceptor clinicians 1. more interpretation of imaging education 2. more emphasis on developing a plan for complex medical patients Provide a more long-term itinerary/plan of what expect as a student in regards to course work, exams, practicals, etc. I am writing this suggestion with the acknowledgement that we were the first class and these were still getting established. better pharmacology preparation The only thing I can think of right now is the lack of women's health I had. As a female provider the majority of primary care providers/preceptors were male and I didn't realize how it would work against me as I see more female patient's now than I have ever seen. Often will get behind in grading and feedback on the projects we would do. This would often lead to lack in learning from the project, as months later I would not always even remember what the questions or answers I had put down. N/a Total Responses 17
24 27. Any other comments? Excellent program! I want to commend all the faculty and staff for putting together an exceptional PA program. I truly appreciate all the hard work you put in to make this happen and to ensure we were all well-prepared to enter the PA field. - Text Response I have had continued compliments from other providers in regards to my preparedness as a new grad, which I owe much to St. Kate's. Though I may not have fully realized it at the time, I feel the senior clerkship was an invaluable experience during my clerkships. Those 10 weeks are where I really gained confidence and independence. I feel without this clerkship, I would not have felt as comfortable starting my job. I will forever be proud to say I graduated from St. Kates. I have worked with several second and third year PA students from other programs and feel that Saint Kates students have been better prepared and more knowledgeable and confident than their peers. No Overall is a great program, and I am very glad that I went there. Total Responses 6
