2 PREPARATION It may be beneficial to remind students of proper theatre etiquette prior to attending performances. Make reservations by calling the box office in advance. Arrive 30 minutes prior to performances whenever possible. While applause and laughter are greatly encouraged and appreciated, talking during a performance is not! Cell phones, pagers, electronic games and watch alarms must all be set on silent, or simply left at home. Do not text message during the show, the light from the phone distracts the audience as well as the actors. You must remain in assigned seats unless provided new seating by theatre management. You are welcome to refresh yourselves in the lobby prior to the performance and during intermission, but no gum, food or drinks are allowed in the auditorium. Feet should remain on the floor. Please remain seated until intermission or the end of the performance. You may also find information about the theatre and the play in the program. It is yours to keep. There may be additional information about the theatre, the play, and children s acting camps in the lobby. Theatre staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Thank you and enjoy the show! POST-SHOW DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Here are some questions the teacher may ask the group after they have seen the play: Why did Mr. Wonka invite 5 special children into his factory? What is the prize for winning a golden ticket? Who was your favorite character and why? If you could try any candy that you saw in the show, which one would you try? Why were Veruca Salt and her parents sent down the garbage chute?

3 Did you know? The story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was originally written by Roald Dahl. His story was then adapted (changed slightly to fit a different style of writing) to the stage by Richard R. George. Dahl was born in Cardiff, Wales. When he was in school, the chocolate company Cadbury would sometimes send boxes of new chocolates to the school so that the students could test them. Dahl used to dream about inventing a chocolate bar that would impress Mr. Cadbury himself, and some think that this was what gave him the idea for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition to writing children s books, Dahl flew fighter planes in World War II. He always loved stories and the wonderful worlds the imagination can create. Chocolate: From a bean to a bar Chocolate actually comes from the seed of the cacao tree. Cacao beans must be fermented (ripened), dried, and roasted before the shell is removed. Then, the cacao nibs (raw, unsweetened chocolate) are ground up and combined with lots of milk and sugar to give us the chocolate we eat! Quiz Think back on what you just saw. 5 Special Words In many of his books, Roald Dahl makes up new words. He uses words like splendiferous and scrumdiddlyumptious as adjectives (describing words) and created nouns (people, places, or things) like hornswogglers and snozzwangers and whangdoodles. Try it! Come up with 5 new words and define what each word means Film Versions Roald Dahl s story has been made into two movies. The first one came out in 1971 and was directed by Mel Stuart, with Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka. Dahl disowned (denied responsibility for) this version because he thought it focused too much on Willy Wonka and not enough on Charlie.1 Tim Burton, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, directed another version of the movie that came out in This new version starred Johnny Depp (who played Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films) as Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder in the 1971 version. Johnny Depp in the 2005 version.

6 Activity: Draw It! Willy Wonka invented all kinds of candy and chocolate bars. Draw 2 different creations and describe each one! Combine your ideas with a partner s. Now design a machine to mass-produce (make over and over) your combined candy! Be sure to label the machine s parts. If you want, you may include a design of the candy s wrapper.
