Your AAA membership not only provides peace-of-mind in the event of a breakdown, but also serves as your special passport to valuable benefits, services and discounts. Membership Primary Membership The basic, regular membership in AAA Southern New England is called a Primary membership. It provides the named member with all the privileges, benefits and services offered by the Club as described in this booklet. AAA membership covers the person, NOT the vehicle. Associate Membership Associate membership is available to all other persons of driving age living in the same residence as the Primary member. There must be a Primary membership in the household before an Associate member may enroll. The Associate member receives a separate membership card and all benefits and services of the Primary member at a reduced rate. The only exception is that Associate members do not receive the Club publication, as only one copy is mailed to each household. INsider Program AAA INsider is a free program for teens, ages 13 to 15. The AAA INsider program includes: AAA Show Your Card & Save benefits throughout the AAA Southern New England territory and a quarterly newsletter providing valuable information about safety and other topics, including education about becoming smart, safe drivers. At the age of 16, the INsider is provided with a free one year Associate membership*, a $28 value, with full benefits including roadside assistance. Membership Information AAA Southern New England members need not possess a driver s license, however, they must be of legal driving age. Service is provided only to those individuals with memberships issued in their names. AAA memberships are not transferable. A valid membership card and valid I.D. is required, so make sure every member of your family has this protection. Club services, benefits and membership dues are subject to change. Your Membership Card Your membership card is your AAA identification. Carry it with you at all times. It must be in your possession to obtain all AAA services. It identifies you as a Club member and allows you to take advantage of all the benefits and services provided with your membership. When requesting service, it is important to have your current membership card and valid I.D. available. 11 1

4 Club Territory AAA Southern New England serves over 3 million members in Rhode Island and Massachusetts including Greater Boston, Worcester, Berkshire County and Cape Cod and the following counties in Connecticut: New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield as well as Salem, NH. As such, AAA services here at home are also available to you at every AAA Club and branch office throughout the United States. You are also eligible for service at all Club offices of the Canadian Automobile Association and at affiliated auto club offices in numerous other foreign countries. General Information In addition to its roadside assistance programs, AAA also makes available to its members an array of products and services in travel, insurance, and financial services as described in this handbook. The Club also offers exclusive products and services with special member discounts and value-added programs. You will be billed annually for your membership in advance of the expiration date. Your membership is active once your payment is applied. A grace period of fifteen (15) days follows the expiration date in which all services, including roadside assistance, are available. Prior to the expiration date of your membership, you will receive a renewal notice for dues and a new membership card for the subsequent twelve (12) month period. Renewal membership payment is due before your current membership expiration date. Membership dues paid during the ninety (90) day period after the expiration date renews your membership for twelve (12) months from the original membership expiration date. Payment received more than ninety (90) days following the expiration causes a new membership to be established and may result in charges such as enrollment fees and non-refundable same-day service fees. New members may incur additional fees such as enrollment costs and a non-refundable same-day service charge. New members who cancel their membership within the first 12 months of membership will incur a $15 cancellation fee. The Club reserves the right to downgrade or cancel any membership at any time, and if it does so, the Club will provide a pro rata refund of membership dues previously paid. Members who request or use an excessive amount of service, over and above that normally received by the average member, may be subject to surcharges, service limitations, downgrades of membership level or cancellation of membership. A charge of $5.00 is incurred to replace lost or stolen membership cards. A check returned to the Club for insufficient funds will result in a $25 charge. Chairman of the Board Frederick K. Whinery, Jr. Roadside Assistance You are one of more than 52 million AAA members who enjoy the world s most comprehensive Roadside Assistance. The most frustrating car troubles occur when most service stations are closed on holidays, Sundays, early in the morning or late at night. With AAA, your cellular phone or the nearest telephone is your 24-hour link to the largest Roadside Assistance network in the world. AAA in the United States and CAA in Canada have over 13,000 garages under contract to provide priority Roadside Assistance to AAA Club members. How to Get Assistance AAA Roadside Assistance will come to your assistance if you experience any difficulty that renders your car, or a car in which you are riding, inoperative or unsafe to drive. The car can be at your home, on a public highway, driveway, parking area or garage, as long as it is accessible to a AAA service vehicle. Road Service Procedures 1. When calling for service, identify yourself by your AAA membership number and name, and then identify the make, model, color and year of the car, registration, plate, the exact location, the nature of your trouble and the telephone number from which you are calling. 2. To obtain service, a valid membership card and valid I.D. must be shown to the responding service facility. 3. It is expected that a member will be with the disabled vehicle. AAA will make every effort to accommodate members in extenuating circumstances. 4. If a membership card is not available, you may have to pay for service and submit the bill for reimbursement consideration. Reimbursement will be based on rates in effect between the Club and its contract garages. 5. After the service call has been completed, you may be required to sign a service slip authorizing payment by the Club to the garage that provided the service. 6. If your car starts before service arrives, please phone to cancel your call so that the driver does not spend additional time looking for you. 7. When AAA service is not available, call a local garage, pay for service, and send the original bill and explanation of the circumstances to AAA within 30 days. The bill should be itemized. If your request is approved, you will be reimbursed for the covered services at the prevailing rate for the region

5 Some turnpikes allow only their own contractors to provide Roadside Assistance. You may be required to pay cash. In such cases, AAA will reimburse you for roadside services such as jump starts, tire changes and reimbursement for towing charges to the nearest exit, to the responding station or three miles from the point of breakdown. When AAA service is available, but not used, you will be reimbursed the amount the AAA contract facility would have charged AAA. Reimbursement is not provided for taxi fares, telephone calls, rental cars or other related expenses. Occasionally, assistance may not reach you within the specified time, and we ask that you call again so we may expedite your service. Roadside Assistance Roadside Assistance is designed to help you through unexpected difficulties with your vehicle, or the one in which you are riding. It is not intended as a substitute for proper maintenance. When your car will not operate under its own power, the AAA service vehicle will spend a reasonable amount of time in an attempt to get you on your way. Eligible Vehicles: Service applies to all properly licensed and registered four-wheeled motor vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational types (vans, campers and motor homes), regardless of license plate designation, if those services can be safely delivered. Dual-wheel campers/motor homes will be provided all services except towing, extrication/recovery and tire service. Dual-wheel, unloaded pick-up trucks are provided all services except flat tire service. Rented passenger vehicles are eligible for service. Commercial vehicles are eligible for service with the exclusion of taxi cabs and limousines. Mechanical First Aid AAA service facility will attempt minor mechanical adjustments that can be made to the disabled vehicle at the scene in order to place it in safe driving condition. AAA Mobile Battery Replacement Service AAA Battery Service will test, boost and, if necessary, replace and install a new battery at a special member rate right on the spot. It s easy and convenient. Call AAA-HELP to make an appointment to have AAA Battery Service test your battery. AAA Auto Glass Service Trust AAA Auto Glass certified installers to repair or replace your auto glass. We accept insurance claims and offer convenient mobile service we come to you at home, at the office, or anywhere you need us or you can visit our convenient locations. Flat Tire Service AAA covers you for flat tire changing. The AAA service vehicle will go to the vehicle and replace your flat tire with your spare, free of charge to you. Tire service/replacement is a temporary fix and not a permanent repair. AAA recommends the member bring the vehicle to a repair facility for a permanent repair. An approved repair facility can be recommended. If the spare is also flat, in poor condition or not available, normal towing privileges will apply and repairs are at the member s expense. If due to vehicle design, a special wrench or tool is required, it must be furnished by the member. Tire service is not rendered to vehicles with dual wheels. Out of Fuel When your vehicle runs out of gas, AAA will deliver a sufficient amount of fuel to reach the nearest service station. Members pay only for fuel at current pump prices. The delivery is free of charge. Locked Out of Car The AAA service provider will attempt to gain entrance to the vehicle by the use of special door opening tools. AAA will tow the eligible vehicle to a locksmith or other destination, subject to towing standards, when the service provider is not able to gain entry. If the vehicle key is lost, broken or the service provider cannot gain entry, AAA will provide locksmith service up to $50. If necessary, AAA will provide both a tow and reimbursement of up to $50 for locksmith service on a single service call. Towing If your vehicle cannot be started after attempting any of the services described on pages 4 through 6, or because of an accident or when in the service facility s judgment the vehicle cannot be placed in a safe driving condition, it will be towed at no charge to the responding or nearest AAA service facility, or to any location within 3 miles. (In the case of an accident, the member should request the police to call AAA to dispatch tow service). If the member desires to have the vehicle towed to a destination other than as stated above, it is not considered emergency towing, but a tow of convenience. Basic level members will not be charged for the first three miles, and will be charged $4.00 per mile after the first three miles. Plus level members will not be charged for the first 100 miles, and Premier level members receive the first 200 miles at no charge. Additional miles over these mileage allowances will be charged at $4.00 per mile. Rates may differ from Club to Club, and members may be asked to pay whatever rate is in effect in that territory. Any subsequent towing for the same breakdown will be at the member s expense. Tow rates in certain states may be subject to tax. In instances when the vehicle becomes disabled while towing a light duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer (excluding fifth wheel trailers). You may be required to pay for towing the trailer. Towing service is not rendered to improperly registered vehicles, vehicles that do not display a current state inspection sticker or vehicles ordered towed by the police for alleged violation of the law. At the scene of an accident, any additional equipment or manpower will be at the member s expense. Members may also be required to pay storage charges if they elect to leave their vehicle at a service facility overnight. A $25 fee will be charged for flatbed service requested by members in cases where the use of a flatbed is not required by the AAA towing manual. All Roadside Assistance is available to Club members 14 4 upon presentation of a valid membership card. 15 5

6 Extricating or Winching Service If a car is stuck in a ditch, mud or snow, it will be freed if it can be safely reached from a normally traveled road or established thoroughfare. A charge may be made if more than one service person or one service vehicle is needed. Once the vehicle is back on the road, normal AAA towing privileges apply. Delays and Deferred Towing Excessive delays may occasionally occur when thousands of members call for service at the same time. This situation is usually caused by adverse weather, unusual traffic or other conditions over which the Club has no control. During these peak periods of demands for our services, we will give priority to those members who are most directly affected by severe weather and to those who may be in a bona fide emergency situation. Tows to a member s choice of destination may have to be delayed until the peak demand on our staff and equipment has subsided. Snowbound vehicles, or those made inaccessible by other conditions, will not be rendered service by the Club until they are made accessible. When a car is disabled on a road that is impassable or dangerous for the service vehicle, the decision to render road service will be made by the answering garage personnel. Inaccessible Locations If a member intentionally drives off a normally-traveled road or established thoroughfare into an inaccessible location, such as a beach, field or wooded area that cannot be reached by a service vehicle, the required service will be rendered at the member s expense. Regular road service privileges will apply when the car is back on the road. However, if a member s car skids off the road or is forced off through an accident, the usual service will be provided. The Club has a staff of Roadside Assistance personnel working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to serve members. With the cooperation of our network of AAA contract service facilities, the Club has an outstanding record of success in this regard. Important Regulations Although the average member uses only one road service call per year, we understand that there may be years when you require more than the average amount of service. In any single membership year, you may use up to four road service calls (five, if you have been a member in good standing for over five years), however above-average use of road service over successive membership years may result in surcharges, service limitations, downgrades of membership level or cancellation of your membership. In the event that you ever require more than four road service calls (or five, if applicable) in any single membership year, you will be required to pay $35 for light service and/or tows back to the closest responding facility; tows to other destinations will be at prevailing rates for towing service. Roadside Assistance is available to the member whose name appears on the membership card while driving or as a passenger in his/her own car, rental car, a friend s car or similar situation. The service is not available to non-members driving a member s car, even if that person resides in the same household. Roadside Assistance will not be provided when it appears that the Club member is unable to operate their vehicle safely. When a member s vehicle is not operable upon providing any of the basic services, the Club will assist the member in finding the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, the Club will assist the member in obtaining lodging or alternative transportation at the member s expense. The Club cannot guarantee 24-hour mechanical repair or parts availability and replacement. The cost of parts, labor and repairs are at the member s expense. While AAA contract garages are carefully selected to provide quality Roadside Assistance, such service facilities are independent contractors and act as agents of the member and not AAA Southern New England. The Club cannot assume responsibility for avoidable or unavoidable delays in providing Roadside Assistance and is not responsible for loss, damages or personal injuries sustained in rendering this service. When out of your own Club s service area, check the white pages of the telephone book under AAA. If you are unable to contact AAA locally, call AAA s Member Services Call Center, toll-free, AAA-HELP ( ) for information about the nearest AAA service facility. (Hearing Impaired TDD). The Club reserves the right to downgrade or cancel any membership at any time, and if it does so, the Club will provide a pro rata refund of membership dues previously paid. For Roadside Assistance information when traveling away from home call AAA-HELP ( ) AAA Approved Auto Repair The AAA Approved Auto Repair (AAR) program solves the problem of where to get reliable, quality auto service. Only AAA identifies repair shops that have proven they can provide consistent, highquality workmanship and will guarantee their work to members. AAR facilities also have agreed, by contract, to abide by the decision of AAA s experts in resolving any dispute between a member and the facility. Some even offer ClubDeal and Show Your Card & Save discounts. AAA has established exacting standards for facilities seeking AAA approval, and a AAA technical specialist conducts a thorough inspection and investigation of each to make sure it meets our criteria. Contact your nearest AAA office for a listing of Approved Auto Repair facilities or visit us at AAA.com. AAA Trip Continuation Reimbursement Members receive financial reimbursement up to $500 if their car is disabled for more than 24 hours as a result of a traffic accident when traveling more than 50 miles away from home. The program is valid anywhere in the U.S. and Canada and covers reasonable expenses* for: Meals and lodging near the repair facility while the member s car is being repaired; Car rental from any licensed car rental agency and/or transportation to their destination on a scheduled commercial transportation system. *Covers expenses incurred within a maximum of three (3) days from time of the accident. Emergency Check Acceptance With AAA Emergency Check Acceptance, your personal check will be accepted for emergency service nationwide and in Canada. If you need emergency service or repairs for your car, AAA contract facilities will accept your personal check for service up to $

7 AAA Plus Coverage For an additional annual fee, Club members who meet certain requirements can apply to become a AAA Plus member and enjoy additional, enhanced benefits. With AAA Plus, you are provided up to 100 miles of towing at no additional cost. Benefits include: Non-AAA Road Service Reimbursement Anytime you need roadside assistance and it s not available through AAA, you ll be reimbursed for the full amount of these services as long as the bills you submit are based on prevailing rates for that area. Up to $750 Trip-Continuation Reimbursement AAA Plus members receive additional coverage whenever their car is disabled due to a traffic accident 50 miles or more from their home. Reimbursement is provided up to $750 for expenses incurred within 72 hours after the accident, including food, lodging, car rental from any licensed car rental agency and/or transportation to their destination on scheduled commercial transportation. Free Passport Photos One set of color passport photos. Emergency Lock and Key Service With AAA Plus, even if a professional locksmith is required, you are covered up to $100 for parts and labor. FREE Fuel and Delivery Service When you run out of gas, AAA Plus will give you a sufficient amount of fuel to reach the nearest service station. If this service fails to make the vehicle operable, the extended towing benefit will apply. Extended Extrication Service AAA Plus extends coverage to include the delivery of services by a second truck and operator for one (1) hour at the scene of a disablement. $2,000 Theft Reward This is double the protection over the basic, regular membership. Up to $2,600 Legal Fee Reimbursement For AAA Plus members, this is double AAA s regular schedule for violations of motor vehicle laws. Bail Bond Protection Traffic laws and ordinances are often confusing, especially in unfamiliar territory; and local authorities may be less tolerant of strangers. When such an incident occurs, guilty or not, you may be required to put up cash bail to assure your appearance in court. The posting of a bail bond to the average motorist is complicated and frequently expensive. AAA members, however, are provided with bail for any amount up to $5,000. 12 $1,000 Theft Reward Protection When you re a AAA member, your car is covered 24 hours a day wherever you may be by your Club s AAA Theft Reward Service. A warning sticker on your car can discourage theft by announcing your Club s offer of a cash reward totaling $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing your car. Police and other security officials engaged in the normal performance of their duties, the registered owner of the vehicle, and AAA members in the immediate family are not eligible for this reward. Legal Reimbursement Service Legal representation in court is often necessary and expensive. There are thousands of accidents and arrests every day. To assure a fair hearing for members, the Club pays for legal protection if you unintentionally or unknowingly violate motor vehicle laws. Reimbursement will not be made if you are convicted of hit-and-run, liquor or narcotics charges. 13 AAA Traffic Safety Programs AAA supports and actively participates in the School Safety Patrol program, AAA Poster and High School Communications contest, the AAA Community Traffic Safety Program, the AAA/Ford Auto Skills Contest, the School s Open-Drive Carefully campaign and pedestrian safety educational programs. The Club cooperates and works closely with police departments, educators, legislators, business, municipal and state traffic and safety officials to bring the AAA safety message to the attention of the general public. National & State Legislation AAA works to ensure the proper use of motorists taxes and to support all legislation in your best interest as a motorist. Continuing progress is being made in achieving more uniform traffic laws, sounder traffic enforcement, improved traffic court procedures, more effective methods to prevent accidents and improving highways and vehicles. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety AAA Southern New England members have the opportunity to actively support the research and outreach activities of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety each time they renew their membership. Years ago, the Club Board of Directors authorized an optional donation solicitation program in support of the AAA Foundation, an IRScertified section 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, non-profit, charitable research and educational organization funded by voluntary contributions from individual AAA members, AAA National and affiliated AAA member Clubs. The $1.00 optional donation is included on the annual Primary member renewal bill. Members who choose not to make the contribution can simply deduct the $1.00 from the total on the bottom of their bill. AAA Driver Training School In both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, AAA Driver Training School is licensed to provide driver education and driver training programs. AAA Driver Training School uses teaching materials developed by AAA at the national level, and provides the level of excellence members have come to expect from the Club.
