1 Fostering and Adoption

2 Post Adoptive Support Who is this leaflet for? This leaflet explains what kind of support is available to you, if you are affected in any way by adoption. There is support available if: You are an adopted child. You are an adoptive parent. You are a birth parent whose child has been adopted. You are a relative of someone affected by adoption. Support for Adopted Children There are a number of services that you may wish to think about at various stages of your life as an adopted child, young person or adult. If you are still living with your adoptive family, you would expect to have most of your support from them. Sometimes adoptive parents find it hard to talk about birth parents, but they will have been given information about why you came to be adopted, which is for them to share with you as you grow up. Sometimes there is a gap in information that your adoptive parents are unable to provide, as it was never made known to them. You might wish to think about seeking more information about your origins when you are an adult. 3

3 When you are 16, you are entitled to obtain a copy of your original birth certificate. This can be done by writing to: The General Register Office for Scotland New Register House 3 West Register Street Edinburgh, EH1 3YT This applies to anyone who is adopted in Scotland. Information, support and advice/counselling is available from a Social Worker in the Post Adoption Service. They would be able to advise you how to go about this, and if you would wish to see your records and adoption court papers. There is an excellent leaflet published by BAAF called "If you are Adopted" which explains some of the things and answers some of the questions you may have. Support for Adoptive Parents The Post Adoption Service offers: The Letter Box Scheme - this supports and arranges the exchange of communication between the adoptive family and the birth family through letters or cards. This exchange of information may be between other brothers and sisters placed with another family or with birth parents or grandparents. For more information, please ask for a copy of Adoption Letterbox Scheme ACC. Post Adoption Direct Contact - sometimes the post adoption support plan includes some direct contact with the child's birth family. It is likely that this will not be more frequent than once or twice a year, with a brother or sister in another adoptive placement, or with a birth parent or grandparent. The Service will be available to support an arrangement for direct contact, where needed. Adoption Allowance Scheme - this provides some financial support for those children that have been deemed eligible for an allowance, and where the adoptive family are financially assessed as being eligible for such an allowance. For more information, please ask for a copy of the Adoption Allowance leaflet. Advice/Counselling - the Post Adoption Social Worker is available to offer advice on issues that an adoptive parent wishes to raise, either as a one-off consultation or on an on-going basis. This might relate to advice about explaining your child's birth history, or perhaps how to help your child's school to understand how best to support them in the classroom. It might be because your child's behaviour is causing you some concern, or it might relate to explaining how your youngster is wishing to seek more information about their birth family as adulthood approaches. Post Adoption Support Group - this group meets on a regular basis and is an opportunity for adoptive parents to meet on an informal basis for support. Post Adoption Training - Aberdeen City Council Social Work Training Team offer a range of training events of interest to adoptive parents. Adoption UK is a parent based organisation whose main mission is to support adopters. Together with the Training Team the offer a range of training programmes on a regular basis. Support for Birth Parents You may have given up your child for adoption many years ago or perhaps more recently. This may have been your own choice or against your wishes. In all cases, this will mean you have many different feelings about what has happened or you may at different stages of your life and want to seek advice or information about what took place. The Post Adoption Service offers: The Letter Box Scheme - This service supports and arranges the exchange of communication between the adoptive family and the birth family through letters or cards. This may be from other brothers and sisters placed with another family or with birth parents or grandparents. For more information, please ask for a copy of Adoption Letterbox Scheme ACC Post Adoption Direct Contact - sometimes your child will continue to have some direct contact with you or a member of your family. It is likely that this will not be more frequent than once or twice a year, but this contact will be supported by a member of the Post Adoption Team. 4 Aberdeen City Council 5

4 Information, Advice/Counselling - as a birth parent, you may want some support about the loss of your child and the impact this has had on you since this happened. If many years have passed, you may wish to find out whether it is possible to trace your child as an adult. The Post Adoption Social Worker would be able to advise you how to go about this and give you as much information about the process as possible. Should the child try to seek contact in the future, birth relatives can register their permission for contact at the time of adoption.
