What we offer Associate of Science Liberal Arts Degree The Associate of Science transfer degree is a two-year liberal arts degree designed to provide the liberal arts foundation generally required for bachelor s degrees at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and many other four-year institutions. In addition to the credits taken at Western, additional credits must be taken at another 4-year institution to complete the program. Associate of Applied Science Degree Programs Western offers over 40 programs that lead to an associate of applied science degree. These programs are in four divisions: Business, General Studies, Health and Public Safety, and Industrial Technologies. Advisory committees, with members from the field that the program prepares students to enter, guide each program. The committee ensures that program content is relevant to the current job market, and prepares students to enter the workforce with job-ready skills. An associate of applied science degree consists of at least 64 credits, and takes two years to complete for those students who are program ready and attend college full time. Associate s degrees consist of Technical Studies and General Studies. The Technical Studies category includes courses that are specific to, or support the development of, technical skills and knowledge. The credit requirement range for Technical Studies is 36 to 49 credits. The General Studies category includes general education program courses which relate to the effective functioning of the individual in both occupational and community settings. The credit requirement range for General Studies is 21 to 30 credits. The Wisconsin Technical College System defines program requirements. The North Central Association of College and Schools accredits all Western programs, while several national professional organizations accredit individual programs. For example, the American Occupational Therapy Association accredits Western s Occupational Therapy Assistant program. Technical Diploma Programs Western offers more than 21 programs that lead to technical diplomas. These programs are in three divisions: Business, Health and Public Safety, and Industrial Technologies. Technical diploma programs are based on local needs of business and industry and are designed to assist persons preparing for entry into, remaining in, or advancing in an occupation. Technical diploma programs have a minimum of two (2) technical credits and a maximum of 70 technical credits. General studies courses and elective courses may be part of some diploma programs. General studies courses include courses in communication skills and courses from the behavioral and social sciences. Technical diploma courses may emphasize building hands-on skills in a shop or lab. The Wisconsin Technical College System defines program requirements. The North Central Association of College and Schools, Higher Learning Commission, accredits all Western programs, and several national professional organizations accredit individual programs. Certificates Certificates may be awarded at the option of the local district for participation and/or attendance at any Western program level and/or adult continuing education course(s), groups of courses or attainment of specific competencies. The courses build skills required in the workplace, and the certificate validates these skills to employers. Advanced Technical Certificates Districts may create Advanced Technical Certificates (ATCs) which shall be designed to provide instruction for persons employed. The content offered in the certificate shall extend beyond that provided in any state approved occupational program. Such certificates shall consist of between nine to twelve credits inclusive. At least six of these course credits must be occupational content beyond what is offered in any approved program. The remaining content may not have been available when the student was in a related program, or it may provide greater breadth for the student. All ATCs are approved by the state. Courses shall be equivalent to associate s degree courses in rigor. Courses shall be developed on an associate s degree credit base. Apprenticeship Training Apprenticeship is a state-registered, formal training program that emphasizes on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson, as well as classroom instruction at Western. They take courses in math, science and other technical subjects related to their craft. Most related classroom instruction takes place at the local vocational education colleges. Automotive technicians enjoy the challenge of diagnosing mechanical and electronic problems, and they also find satisfaction in earning good wages from performing highly skilled tasks. The demand for automotive technicians is high. Because the population that is old enough to drive is increasing, more people own cars than ever before. In addition, new vehicles have complicated automotive systems that require skilled attention. And, vehicles today generally have a longer useful life and extended warranties, increasing the need for automotive technicians services. Career opportunities for automotive technicians are excellent. Technicians may work for dealerships, automobile manufacturers, fleet companies (taxis and rental cars), independent garages and service stations. Many technicians are self-employed. ASE Certification The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, a branch of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), has certified Western s Automotive Technician program. We re proud of our ASE certification, but more importantly, ASE certification is your guarantee that Western s automotive instructors, courses, shop and equipment meet national standards set by the automotive industry for training programs. In addition, all our instructors are ASE-certified technicians. They have over two years of experience in eight service areas, such as electrical systems and engine repair and have passed written exams in those areas.
