2 YEAR 10 INTO YEAR 11 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET) EXPRESSION OF INTEREST PACKAGE FOR 2014/2015 Vocational Education and training (VET) is offered to senior students in one of two ways at St Mary s Catholic College; 1 As a full Vocational Education and Training option 2 By studying an Authority Registered Subject which has a Vocational emphasis FULL VET SCHOOL OPTION Students attend college three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), train for one day (either Thursday or Friday) and complete structured work placement one day a week (either Thursday or Friday). Three days attendance at school means that subject choice is limited to five subjects on certain lines and that at the end of Year 12 students do not receive an OP but they are eligible for a Selection Rank. Subjects for 2014/2015 are: All subject information can be found on the school website. Religion and Ethics English Communication or English Prevocational Mathematics or Math A Social and Community Studies Elective Student Choice Students elect to study one of the following Authority Registered Subjects. Creative Art - Visual Recreation Certificate III in Fitness (through MOU with Binnacle Training) Certificate I in Furnishing and Certificate I in Manufacturing (Pathways) Certificate I in Engineering and Certificate I in Manufacturing (Pathways) Certificate I in Hospitality and Certificate II in Kitchen Operations* Please note: All electives may not be offered based on class numbers and qualified trainers. *Pending successful Registration If a student wants to choose an Authority subject on the given line, this needs to be negotiated with Mrs Neilson. If a student meets all requirements of the QCE, he/she will be issued the Queensland Certificate of Education at the completion of Year 12.

3 In 2014 the senior VET option will be integrated with mainstream classes and it will be the student s responsibility to catch up on lessons missed when attending structured work placement, apprenticeship and/or training days. With less time at school, considerable effort is given to including the students in as many activities as possible, to enable them to feel part of the college. However, in some instances this is not feasible and sometimes students may miss the occasional activity. Students undertaking Vocational Education and Training Studies in Years 11 & 12 will pay full school fees. Where the vocational studies subjects are conducted at St Mary s, charges for materials may be levied. Where students undertake Vocational Studies courses at other Registered Training Organisations, the College will pay the first $220 per term for tuition fees (not material costs) billed by that RTO. For fees paid to external RTO s, proof of payment (receipt) is to be provided to the college for the rebate to be paid. If and when students sign up for a School-based Traineeship or Apprenticeship, then the government department, DETE, may pay the full tuition fees directly to the Registered Training Organisation if funded under user choice. In these cases, there is no parent payment of tuition fees, nor any refund from the college. TRAINING The training providers currently used by St Mary s Catholic College are Tropical North Queensland TAFE, Cairns Beauty Academy, CAPTA, AIRC and others. Students attend training each Thursday in the main. All training options will be considered and must be approved by the VET Coordinator prior to enrolling. Certificate I in Construction with support from Construction Skills Queensland may be offered through St Mary s Catholic College. Certificate I in Engineering with Certificate I in Manufacturing (Pathways) and Certificate I in Hospitality with Certificate II in Kitchen Operations may be offered through St Mary s Catholic College. St Mary s Catholic College guarantees that all effort will be made to ensure reasonable opportunity of completion within the given timeframe will be given to students registered for certificate courses. Training for the school section may be covered by Government funding and material costs may be incurred and are listed on the TAFE information. 4 STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT Throughout the year students complete work placement each Thursday or Friday (commencing week 2/3). Structured work placement ideally has to be in the area where students are training. Students who have obtained a school-based apprenticeship (SAT) with an employer, are paid for the time they work and have time taken off their apprenticeship. The expression of information package contains information relevant to employers who may be considering taking on a student as a SAT. Students are responsible for organising their own work placement as this encourages their commencement in to the work environment. ISSUES TO CONSIDER Am I prepared to work hard? Can I organise transport to and from training and work experience? Do I want to receive an OP or qualify for a Selection Rank? Am I committed to successfully combining work, training and school? Can I act responsibly in the workplace? Am I aware that VET does not guarantee employment? VET SELECTION To be considered, students complete the expression of interest form and organise an interview with the Trade Training Centre Manager. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend the interview also. Students who do not meet all requirements at any stage throughout the course will be interviewed by the Principal and the Trade Training Centre Manager and may find their enrolment in the VET program at risk.
