1 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (FE and Skills Sector) PGCE This teacher training programme is for individuals who wish to gain a nationally recognised Level 6 teaching certificate in the post compulsory sector Overview Are you interested in teaching in the further education and skills sector, or looking to gain a specialist teaching qualification to enhance your career progression? This programme will provide those working in the further education, adult education, sixth forms and independent education sectors with the skills, knowledge and experience to advance their teaching practice. This course covers the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching, including observations of practical teaching. Key facts Teaching Postgraduate Qualification Teaching and Learning Development Awarded by This course is not suitable for anyone wishing to teach in the primary or secondary education sector. Applications are made direct to South Essex College.

2 About this course Why should I do this course? The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course is designed to encourage you to achieve your aims through engaging in activities which are directly related to your own teaching context. The course is offered on a part-time and full-time basis with full tutorial support. You will be taught by a team of core staff supplemented by specialist guest speakers. Members of the teaching staff are highly experienced in education studies and related disciplines. The course is designed to meet the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Professional Standards and has at its heart, a model of critical reflective practice that facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor and tutor. The course offers initial teacher education for those who wish to be employed in a variety of post-16 educational and training establishments and may enable the holder to submit evidence for professional formation and QTLS status conferred by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). The course attracts a wide range of students with differing specialisms who ensure that trainees experience a variety of views and contemporary experience. There are great opportunities to share good practice and have discussions with peers. The qualification is awarded through the University of Essex. What's covered? Teaching methods A variety of teaching strategies are used, such as group interaction, paired and individual work, one-to-one seminars, guest speakers, support from subject specialist mentors and regular tutorial input. A range of interactive technologies is taught and is available for use by trainees. Structure Part-time: The programme is delivered over two years. Four separate 15 credit modules are delivered in year one and four separate 15 credit modules are delivered in year two, all at level six. Full-time: The programme is delivered over one year. Eight separate 15 credit modules all at level six. 3 The course is 30 weeks in duration, with one week induction, 28 weeks teaching and two weeks guided assessment preparation and fitness to practice evidence gathering. How will my work be assessed? You will be assessed through a mixture of essays, reports, assignments and practical tasks as appropriate for the learning outcomes of each individual module. assessment dates fall in terms one, two and three, assessment schedules are provided at induction and are detailed in the student programme handbook you will complete a variety of assignments including portfolios of teaching practice, presentations, viva, case study, brochure, seminar, research report, blog you need to complete a minimum of 100 hours teaching across the course and will be observed eight times in total there are no examinations What can I do after this? You may apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Previous trainees have gone onto become practicing teachers, create their own businesses, study further specialist teaching qualifications and have progressed to Masters Level study. You could progress to a further education college, school sixth form, adult education college or an independent training provider. Additional costs There are no additional costs for this course but trainees will be charged an administration fee of if a DBS check is required by the College. Structure Modules Delivered Principles of Teaching and Learning: Provides you with the knowledge of roles and responsibilities of a teacher within the Further Education and Skills Sector. It covers an introduction to record keeping and assessment as well as creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive learning environment. During the module you will also be introduced to how to plan and deliver a session and embed key Ofsted requirements of literacy, numeracy, employability and strategies on how to embrace equality and diversity. Developing Teaching and Learning: During this module you will evidence that you can deliver plan and deliver a series of successful teaching sessions by investigating the theories, principles and models of learning, communication and assessment in relation to planning and delivering inclusive teaching and learning. You will also be able to understand the importance of, and provide evidence of, progression and stretch and challenge within their teaching sessions. Enabling learning by Assessment: The module covers the theories and principles of assessment, requiring you to design and demonstrate assessment methods. You will obtain an in depth understanding of the purpose and types of assessment that are available for them to utilise in and out of their sessions along with the benefits and pitfalls of all. You will also obtain knowledge of the concept of assessment for learning and assessment of learning all of which will be embedded with minimum core skills and how best to provide feedback dependent upon the assessment method employed.

4 Managing Behaviour: The module enables you to understand the causes of disruptive behaviour and how best to manage this plus further strategies to promote learning. You will learn about the importance of a safe and effective learning environment, how to promote this to enable your students to make good or better progress by behaviour management techniques and the setting of high expectations for the class which are conducive to learning. Theories and principles in Pedagogy: The module enables you to understand further key theories, principles and applications of learning, as well as expectations of inclusive and individualised learning. It focuses on the contexts for education and training in the Further Education and Skills Sector as well as providing you with an understanding of learning methods within previous sectors that your learners may have encountered in order to improve the current learning experience. Developing resources for inclusive practice: The unit aims to enable you to develop, use, and organise resources within a specialist subject, vocational or other area. It includes the purpose, development and use of resources, how to organise them and enable access to others. It also includes understanding legal requirements and responsibilities relating to resources and evaluating own practice in their development and use, ensuring that all material prepared for taught sessions are the correct levels and standards. Wider Professional Practice in education and training: The purpose of the unit is to provide you with knowledge, understanding and skills related to wider professional practice in education and training. It includes: understanding professionalism and professional values in education and training, the policy context of education and training, the impact of being accountable to stakeholders and external bodies and the organisational context of education and training. It also includes understanding and contributing to the quality improvement and quality assurance arrangements of an organisation. Action Research project: The unit aims to enable you to carry out action research in an area of professional practice. It includes understanding the nature and purpose of action research, conducting action research and presenting the outcomes. It also involves evaluating own practice in relation to action research and an insight into the benefits of primary and secondary data associated with qualitative and quantitative collection methods. 5 possess a current Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check Full-time (80046) an Honours degree or equivalent GCSE English and maths at grade C (old specification) or Grade 4 (new specification) or above OR a Level 2 equivalent such as functional skills possess a suitable voluntary placement students should look for their own placement, where possible support will be provided to source but there is no guarantee that we will be able help secure a placement be delivering a minimum of 100 hours of teaching in each year of study - evidence of this will be required during the application cycle prior to entry have provision of a mentor in the workplace who is a qualified teacher/lecturer (i.e. PGCE, Cert Ed or DTLLS) and where possible is a subject specialist in the same area as the trainee teacher - evidence of this named person will be required during the application cycle prior to entry in September (where the mentor is not a subject specialist the trainee teacher will require the support of a named subject coach) possess a current Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check. Where this is not the case the College will undertake this but there will be an administrative charge to the applicant of Application Deadline: Friday 28th July We will consider applicants holding overseas qualifications that are equivalent to an Honours degree level or higher. For an assessment of overseas qualifications contact National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (NARIC). However, please note formal English and maths qualifications will still be required alongside any equivalent Honours degree or above. NB: Applicants must possess and evidence all of the above before enrolling onto the course. The application process is conducted in two stages. Applicants must successfully complete the first stage in order to be invited to participate in the second. Stage 1 - Initial Assessments and Qualification check Applicants must complete initial diagnostic assessments in both literacy and numeracy, achieving a score of at least 50%. Each diagnostic assessment will take approximately 1 hour. Applicants with a score below 50% will not be taken forward to Stage 2 of the application process but may be offered an alternate course such as the Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training. Reasonable adjustments can be made where appropriate and can be discussed in advance with the admissions team at Stage 2 Interview/Selection Process Satisfactory interview including the following: a written essay (set on the day of interview) group discussion individual interview 15 minute micro-teach on a subject of your choice to an audience of your peers (Full time applicants only) guidance to be provided prior to interview
