1 The Best Book I Read This Year Essay Contest! Write an essay titled: The Best Book I Read This Year 1 st Place essays will advance to the Diocesan level. Questions? Ask Kathleen Huggins khuggins@spxdallas.org Attention: Parents & Students Please read and understand these contest guidelines: 1. The book must be something you have read this school year. 2. The essay must be written by the contestant independently and without assistance. 3. Using only one side of the paper, the essay can be neatly handwritten on lined paper or typed. 4. If typed, you may choose the font and size of the lettering, but it should be easy to read.. Print the total number of words in your essay in the upper right hand corner of the first page. Categories & length requirements: 1 st grade 1 paragraph essay with words 2 nd -3 rd grade 2 paragraph essay with words 4 th - th grade 3 paragraph essay with words 6 th -8 th grade paragraph essay with words 6. Include the title and author of the book in the first paragraph of the essay. 7. In the first paragraph tell whether the book is fiction or nonfiction. Also in the first paragraph, identify the book s specific genre(s), such as nonfiction history, nonfiction science, nonfiction religion, mythology, poetry, nonfiction animals, biography/autobiography, fairytale/folktale/tall tale, science fiction, historical fiction, religious fiction, contemporary/realistic fiction, humorous fiction, mystery/suspense, adventure fiction, animal fiction, fantasy, sports fiction, etc. 8. Write your name, grade, and school on the back of your paper. Do NOT put your name on the front of your paper. 9. Use the Essay Contest Rubric to score the rough draft of your essay. Then revise, edit, and rewrite it as needed. 10. Students may enter only once. 11. Place your essay in the contest box located in the library. 12. The contest starts March 2nd. The last day to turn in your essay is Tuesday, March 31 st. Note: Every essay will be scored by 3 judges. Ties will be resolved at the judge s discretion.

Therefore, they are requiring contestants and their parents to agree and sign the following statement in order to protect the integrity of the contest and just treatment for all participants. By signing my name below, I testify that all aspects of the student s essay being submitted here are the student s own work. The student read the described book.
