1 Bristol Cathedral Choir School Mission Statement Bristol Cathedral Choir School is a Church of England Academy with an ethos reflecting the Christian faith and with music and mathematics as its specialisms. It aspires to be a learning community where all achieve their full potential in a supportive and tolerant environment, so that they can contribute fully to the society in which they live. Expeditions All those involved in supervising, assessing and training students on DofE expeditions operated by BCCS must be approved to do so by the SLT, DofE Manager, Lead Supervisor and EVC, and be qualified as follows (See Appendix A for summary of roles) 1) Expedition Assessors All expedition assessors must be accredited through the DofE Expedition Assessor Accreditation Scheme. Assessors must not have been involved with preparing students for that particular expedition. Gold Expeditions: Assessed by independent Assessors Silver Expeditions: Assessor will be by independent Assessor where possible, and dependent on area visited. Bronze qualifying expeditions may be assessed by accredited assessors from within BCCS, providing the assessor has not been responsible for the training of that group. 2) Expedition Supervisors Lead Supervisor and Supervisors o Hold a national governing body award appropriate to location, terrain and forecast weather conditions (Appendix B).

2 o o o o Valid and appropriate First Aid Certificate of correct length to validate NGB Award Hold CRB/DBS checked by BCCS. Have completed BCCS or equivalent safeguard training. Are familiar with Risk Assessment processes of BCCS. Assistant Supervisor o Hold First Aid certificate. o Hold CRB/DBS checked by BCCS. o Have completed BCCS or equivalent safeguard training. o Are familiar with Risk Assessment procedures. o Approved by Lead Instructor as suitably experienced in area to be visited (Appendix C) o Have completed 1 day DofE Expedition Supervisors Course or have supervised on expeditions in past 3 years. o Are working towards appropriate National Governing Board Award (Appendix B) 3) Expedition Support Staff All supporting staff involved in overnight expeditions must: Hold CRB/DBS checked by BCCS Have had BCCS or equivalent safeguarding training. Be approved by Lead instructor as suitably experienced / trained to support supervision. 4) Expedition Trainers All trainers must have relevant experience and knowledge and be approved for the elements they teach by the DofE Manager/Lead instructor. A matrix showing approved expedition staff will be held by the DofE Manager at BCCS.

3 Volunteering, Skill and Physical Recreation Section Assessors and Supervisors. DofE leaders will brief participants and check the suitability of their proposed activity. When a participant s activity is arranged through BCCS School, the DofE Manager will ensure that the assessor/organisation is appropriately briefed on the requirements of that section of the Award and that the necessary CRB/DBS checks and safeguarding checks have been completed. When a participant elects to self-arrange an activity/assessor beyond the remit of the School the participant s parent(s)/carer(s) will be responsible for assuring themselves of the suitability of the assessor or organisation with regards to child protection and safety issues. Parents /Carers will be notified of the above and demonstrate acknowledgement through signed consent when applying to take part in the Award. The BCCS Award Manager will monitor participants activities and where necessary contact external assessors to ensure that the requirements of the Award are met. All BCCS led DofE activities must comply with BCCS policies on: Safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults Equal Opportunities Trips Health and Safety These standards must be adhered to under the terms of our DofE licence.

4 Appendix A: Summary of Roles involved in delivery of DofE and BCCS SLT DofE Manager: Lead Supervisor(s) Assistant Supervisor Expedition Support Staff Expedition Trainer DofE Leader EVC Senior Leadership Team, inc. Principal (License holder). Currently Neil Blundell (Principal) Member of BCCS Staff approved by Principal to organise the delivery of the DofE Award. Currently Will Davies Suitably qualified (Appendix A). This person could be the DofE Manager, a member of BCCS Staff, or an external Instructor approved by BCCS. Currently Will Davies and Jamie Foster Suitably experienced and qualified to assistant in remote supervision of groups during expedition, First Aid qualified. Currently: Jez Srokosz BCCS Staff member. Staff road checkpoints and report back to Lead Supervisor of groups. Supervise safe camp craft Normally the DofE Manager/Lead Supervisor. Trains students in navigation, camp craft, Equipment, First Aid and teamwork. Member of BCCS Staff who support students through the award, offering advice and guidance on Volunteering, Physical and Skill section, and support Expeditions as Lead Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor or Expedition Support Staff. Educational Visits Coordinator. Approves Risk Assessments of Expeditions. Currently David Crabtree

5 Appendix B: Appropriate Qualifications for Role of Lead Supervisor SWMMTS Coastal & Countryside Leader Award (with Camping Endorsement for overnight camps). Basic Expedition Leader Award (BELA) SWMMTS Summer Moor land Leader (with Camping Endorsement for overnight camps) Walking Group Leader (WGL). Mountain Leader Summer (ML) Winter Mountain Leader (WML) International Mountain Leader Award (IML) Mountaineering Instructor Award (MIA) Suitable for leading Bronze (and Silver with appropriate experience) Expeditions in rural non-moor land countryside. Suitable for leading Bronze and Silver Expeditions in rural and lowland countryside. Suitable for leading Bronze, Silver and Gold Expeditions in moorland areas of the South West (including the parts of the Brecon Beacons below 600m) in summer conditions. Suitable for all walking expeditions in the UK in summer conditions except those in wild country above 600m. NB. Must include an additional module on remote camping. Suitable for all walking expeditions in wild country in the UK in summer conditions. Suitable for all walking expeditions Suitable for leading expeditions in the UK in winter conditions. Suitable for leading parties to all mountain areas except on glaciers, and where the techniques or equipment of alpinism are required Suitable for all Expeditions Suitable for specific situations and conditions found in the mountains in the UK in the summer, including multipitch climbing. Mountaineering Certificate (MIC) Instructor Suitable for all Expeditions Builds on the MIA and covers the additional skills required for winter mountaineering and winter climbing. All Awards are invalid without current and appropriate First Aid course. First Aid courses normally need revalidating every 3 years. Some awards also require membership of the British Mountaineering Council, which is renewed annually.

6 Appendix C: Criteria and Expectations for Assistant Supervisors and Expedition Support Staff Will work at direction of Lead Supervisor dependent on location, terrain and weather forecast, be deemed to be suitably experienced in the area expedition is to take place, and competent in navigating and campcraft by DofE Manager and Lead Supervisor for role. Rural and Lowland Areas (Bronze and Silver) Assistant Supervisor o Deemed to be competent navigating in location/terrain/weather. o Walk with groups for training purposes o Staff checkpoints away from roads. o Offer First Aid. Expedition Support Staff o Supervise safe camp craft in campsites (not wild camps) o Staff Checkpoints and be in contact with Lead or Assistant Supervisor as appropriate. Upland, Moorland and Mountain Areas (Silver and Gold) Assistant Supervisor o Staff checkpoints below 600m, within man made boundaries, no less than 30mins from road (non-remote), appropriate to experience and in light of location/terrain/weather. o Offer First Aid. Expedition Support Staff o Supervise safe camp craft in campsites (not wild camps) o Staff Checkpoints at Roads, and report to Lead or Assistant Supervisor as appropriate.
