1 INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS: THE WILD DUCK Ibsen reimagined. Australia s Simon Stone is one of the most in demand directors on the international scene and his fearless adaptations of classic plays have taken the theatre world by storm. In this refreshingly modern version of The Wild Duck, Stone goes straight for the jugular, stripping back Ibsen s text and firing the action in rapid, unpredictable scenes. The superb ensemble actors are put behind glass, turning the audience into voyeurs. From our seats we watch the characters as they struggle with unbearable truths, in a glass box from which no escape seems possible. Age recommendation: 14+ Audience warning: contains coarse language, themes of depression and suicide. Pre- and post-show activities are included and are designed to link the attendance at a Perth International Arts Festival performance to students work in the classroom. This document has been developed using the Western Australian curriculum.

2 EXCURSION PLAN: THE WILD DUCK Contact: Education Coordinator, Danielle Morache Phone: (08) Fax: (08) Website: PURPOSE OF THE EXCURSION To view a performance of The Wild Duck as part of the 2016 Perth International Arts Festival. ENVIRONMENT Venue: Heath Ledger Theatre State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, corner of Roe and William Streets, Northbridge Access to the building can be obtained from the main entrance on William Street, the entrance on Roe Street or the entrance from James Street. A lift provides access to all levels of the building. There is also a staircase inside the building for all level access. Wheelchair access is available. Wheelchair seating can be requested through your ticketing agent. Should you have a group of students who require wheelchair seating, please contact the venue direct on (08) TRANSPORT Transport arrangements are the responsibility of the school. For public transport options contact Transperth: Please refer to bus drop off points on map overleaf. Buses can then park alongside Synergy Parkland, May Drive in Kings Park or Nelson Crescent near the WACA. Schools are advised to allow adequate time for travelling to the venue, as latecomers will not be admitted until an appropriate break in the performance.

3 STUDENTS This performance is suitable for ages 14+. It contains curriculum references to General Capabilities, Drama and English. The performance contains coarse language and sensitive content. Students will be involved in viewing a performance that is 75mins no interval. If you are bringing students with special needs or intensive health care needs please contact the venue direct to ensure the venue is suitable. SUPERVISOR/SUPERVISORY TEAM It is the responsibility of the school to develop a supervisory team that meets their specific requirements in line with the recommendations for supervision below. Perth International Arts Festival, performers and venue staff may lead, demonstrate, perform and present activities but will not undertake any role in a supervisory context. It would be appreciated if the person with overall responsibility for the group makes themselves known to the Duty Front of House Manager. Patrons must have a ticket to enter the Heath Ledger Theatre. Please ensure tickets are handed out in the main box office foyer prior to performance commencement. It is recommended to keep a record of each student s ticket allocation in case of loss.

4 EXTERNAL PROVIDER INFORMATION The Perth International Arts Festival presents The Wild Duck as part of the 2016 program. The Festival has a public liability insurance policy for $20 million. Should you require information relating to the venues public liability insurance please contact stcwa@ptt.wa.gov.au IDENTIFICATION OF EXCURSION PARTICIPANTS This is the responsibility of schools. School uniform or some form of easily identifiable item for each student is an option which may be considered by schools. COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES The contact phone number for the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia is (08) The contact phone number for the Perth International Arts Festival is (08) EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN Schools will have their own Emergency Response Plan pertaining to the particular needs of their students. School first aid kits can be stored in the venue cloakroom if they are brought with them. There is no St John Ambulance service on site. The State Theatre Centre of Western Australia has an extensive Emergency Response Plan in place including a PA system and audible fire alarms. Please note that this document is not publically available. Please contact the venue for further information if required. In the event of a site emergency, school supervisory teams are responsible for managing the movement of students under the direction of venue staff. School supervisory teams are strongly encouraged to meet supervision requirements to further support these procedures. It is suggested that school staff have access to a list of names of participating students, contact telephone numbers, student medical information and relevant health information of supervisors. BRIEFING STUDENTS AND SUPERVISORS It is the school s responsibility to brief students on excursion arrangements and theatre etiquette prior to attending.
