EDUCATIONAL LARP WHAT IS LARP? WHY IS LARP GOOD FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES? WHAT ARE DRAMA GAMES? DENNIS LANGE, WALDRITTER E.V., Some thoughts on Learning, Educational Processes and why Educational (MINI-)LARPs help you to present knowledge or learning content in an exititing way.
WHAT IS LARP? But what is LARP?
LARP MEANS L A R P IVECTION OLE LAY LARP contents Live-Action,Role and Play
LARP MEANS LIVE-ACTION ROLE PLAY
SETTING STORY CHARACTERS PLOTLINE THE MAGIC One of the best ways to explain LARP is your favourite Story-Book. Imagine, how it would be to take over the action of all of the characters, or just the main figur, and decide what this character should do. So you act by yourself inside a story and inside a given setting.
EXAMPLE: MIDDLE EARTH CHARACTERS PLOTLINE If you want do do a Lord of the Rings LARP THE MAGIC
EXAMPLE: MIDDLE EARTH PLOTLINE THE MAGIC you need Characters (Hobbits in this case), that are played (improvised) by you and your friends.
EXAMPLE: MIDDLE EARTH THE MAGIC you need a plotline (bring the One Ring to Mount Doom).
EXAMPLE: MIDDLE EARTH And the special Magic of the story which can be real Magic, done by Gandalf, the wizard
EXAMPLE: MIDDLE EARTH or the special friendship between the figures (magic moments, if you like).
MIDDLE EARTH LARP THE GOOD GUYS : THE BAD GUYS : Bring more friends to play all of the good and bad guys, and then you can nearly start.
MIDDLE EARTH LARP PROPS: LOCATION : Just some props to dress you and your friends properly, and an epic location ;)
LARP LIVE-ACTION Let s look at the aspects of LARP: ROLE PLAY
LIFE-ACTION REAL PEOPLE INTERACTION RIGHT IN THE MOMENT Life-Action means, that real people interact in the actual situation. Like improvised theatre, it can t be reproduced or played again this way.
LIFE-ACTION AFFECTS: LOCATION NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS SET DESIGN Knowing that, you have to choose your Location, Number of Participants and Set Design.
LARP LIVE-ACTION ROLE PLAY
ROLE CHARACTER PART IN THE STORY / GAME IMMERSION / PLAY FOR SHOW Having Roles or Charakters means, that you pretend to be someone else, that you are imbedded in a story and either play for your own immersion or for show (helping the others to play their roles better)
ROLE AFFECTS: OUTFIT LIFE-LONG / JUMP-IN CHARACTER SERIOUS / FOR FUN To do this, you have to think about Outfits, how long you want to play your charakter and how serious it should be presented.
LARP LIVE-ACTION ROLE PLAY
PLAY RULES GAME MASTERS META-TECHNIQUE OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME Being inside a play means that you have special rules, game masters that steer the story and the action. Before starting you make agreements about meta-techniques (how do we symbolise magic eg.) and the objective of the game (having fun, solving an adventure, learning something, )
PLAY AFFECTS: GAMEPLAY IMMERSION PRESENTATION OF THE SETTING This aspect affects your gameplay, the grade of immersion an the presentation of the setting in generall
WHAT IS LARP COLLABORATION / INTERACTION PRETEND / CHARACTER PLAY RULES / GAME OBJECTIVE NO AUDIENCE Concluding these aspects, you can say that LARP is: Pretending to be a role or character inside a collaborative or interactive game with special rules and objectives. Another important point is, that there is no audience everyone is part of the game/ the action.
SIMILAR GAME FORMS SIMULATION GAME -> Focus on Strategy, Game Mechanics. Usually no Character-Roles. ROLEPLAY GAMES IN PSYCOLOGY AND PEDAGOGY -> Focus on Training, Self-Awareness and Change of behaviour IMPROVISATION THEATRE -> Focus on interaction. Usually no character-based story. FORUM THEATRE -> Focus on social interaction. Works with an audience. LARP in similar to other gaming and role-playing forms but differs from them mostly in it s special focus.
WHY IS LARP GOOD FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES? Why is LARP good for Education?
PRECONDITIONS FOR EDUCATION (INTENTIONAL) LEARNING TARGET CORRESPONDING SETTING MATCHING GAME DESIGN Most of the LARPs don t follow a special aim, so the eudacional processes are happening by chance/ accidentally. But if you want to set up a LARP or Mini-LARP with an educational goal, it has to be intentional you define your goal before and evaluate over the whole process, whether you still follow that goal. To support this goal, it is good to choose a corresponding setting and a matching game design, that helps you to reach it.
HUMAN LEARNING MOTIVATION HOLISTIC, EMOTIONAL LEARNING SOCIAL LEARNING REGARD PROBLEMS FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES Corresponding to actual brain researchers there are some factors, that support human learning in the best way. This includes personal, intrinsic motivation, a holistic and emotional learning in a social group and the possibilities, to regard the presented problems from different angles.
LARP INTERESTING PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT SOCIAL INTERACTION COMPLEX STORY-LINES All of these positive learning factors can be activated by using LARP techniques. In a well designed Educational LARP (Edu-LARP) you have an interesting story/ setting that provides personal involvement and a high amount of social interaction. It also gives you the chance to tell complex story-lines by using metatechniques or live-like settings in your LARP.
LEARNING PROCESS LECTURER KNOWLEDGE LERNER With Edu-LARP you also get the chance, to see educational processes in a complete different way: Usally you have a lecturer that provides knowledge to the lerners.
EDU LARP PREPARATION LECTURER GAME KNOWLEDGE LERNER REFLECTION With Edu-LARP, you often don t have one lecturer, but a group of people learning together and experience the learning process in a cooperative way. This happens in 3 phases: 1. If you have to play a role in a game, you will try to get to know as much as possible to play the role in the best way. So you have an intrinsic motivation go research for information. 2. During the game you can place elements to get knowledge 3. Most of the educational transfer happens after the game, where you connect the made experiences with your real life. You can work around the realism of the imaginary story, the intension of the characters or special momentsin the game. How does the game affect your (future) life?
EDU-LARP CONCEPTS INCLUDING KNOWLEDGE / SOCIAL SKILLS INTO THE ADVENTURE (E.G. WALDRITTER CONCEPT / LARP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE) In general, there are 3 ways of transfer educational contents/ knowledge by LARP. One of the easiest ways is to provide a fascinating adventure story ( find the treasure ) and include elements, where the participants learn something. (E.g. you can only open a magic chest if everyone puts an oak-leaf on it so you have to find out, which tree is an oak, how it looks and feels ) It works a bit like a radio: a carrier wave carries the information. The adventure works as carrier wave creates a motivation and the educational content is inbedded into it.
EDU-LARP CONCEPTS GAME DESIGN TO REPRESENT A SPECIAL THEME (E.G. ALTERNATE REALITY GAME / EDUCATIONAL LARP) Another way to transfer information is to set up a game, that represents a special (complex) theme. The Waldritter came up with the idea of (Live-) Alternate Reality Games Urban Games, that base on a special theme, like Surveillance, Right-Wing-Extemism, Interculturality, Environmental Protection that try to blur the lines between game and reality in a live-like game experience.
EDU-LARP CONCEPTS ALTERNATE REALITY GAME (WALDRITTER / BASA) The Attack Project Prometheus Information is KnowledgeInformation is Terror You believe, what you are seeing? Don t believe, what you re seeing! What is reality what is fiction? Friend Enemy Secrets Conspiracy Surveillance Paranoia Your reality your game. Experience, how your game becomes reality Experience, how your reality becomes a game. Trailer for Educational Alternate Reality Games by Waldritter: Project Prometheus (Media Manipulation, Surveillance) The Foreigners (Interculturality, Ethics) - v=i9tylt6skd4 The Movement (Racism, Right-Wing Extremism)
EDU-LARP CONCEPTS LARP AS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (E.G. ØSTERSKOV EFTERSKOLE) In Denmark there s a school (Østerskov Efterskole) that s doing all of their curriculum / lessons with LARP methods: (there s also english information)
EDU-LARP CONCEPTS EXODUS (WALDRITTER / BASA) POLITICAL EDUCATION DESTROYER AS LOCATION, 5 DAYS, 100 PLAYERS, PLAY TO LOOSE, READY-TO-PLAY EVENT One way to do an educational larp, if you can get an real destroyer: Project Exodus exodus-larp.de (also provides information in english)
WHAT ARE DRAMA GAMES / MINI LARPS? (Also known as: Chamber Games, Freeform Games or Jeepform Games) What are drama games?
MINI-LARP 3 STEPS (PREPARATION, GAME, REFLECTION) SHORT TIME, FEW PROPS HIGHLY EMOTIONAL MANY META TECHNIQUES In Mini-LARPs you present a short game with a special theme. Mostly, you have a preparation phase, where you get your players into the mood fo the game. Then there s the game phase, and the debriefing/ reflection, where you get out of the roles and analyse what happened in the game. For a Mini-LARP you need few props, you can play it in a short amount of time. It uses a lot of meta-techniques and is nevertheless highly emotional.
ADVANTAGES EASY TO JOIN CLEAR PERIOD OF TIME / STRUCTURE (GUIDED) GROUP EXPERIENCE MANY META TECHNIQUES Mini-LARPs provide an easy way to work around several themes, because they present an emotional contact to (complex) themes. They are easy to join, have a clear structure and defined period of time. It s guided by a game master and everyone is involved, so it s a group experience without many barriers to overcome. The metatechniques help to steer the game and include all participents into the educational process.
