2 About TransLife Established in 1973, TransLife is the federallydesignated not-for-profit organ procurement (OPO) for 10 in east Central Florida. We are one of 58 donor programs in the United States and one of four serving the Sunshine State. TransLife offers organ services and professional and public programs to the community. 12 The Donation Process The of organs involves many people working together to achieve a common goal of saving and improving lives. It begins with our community hospitals. Step One: Referral Hospitals in Central Florida call TransLife in the event of a death or imminent death, as required by federal law. A specially trained recovery coordinator visits the hospital to assess if an individual is medically able to donate, and to discuss dona@on with family members. Dona@on gives families a posi@ve op@on during the most difficult

13 The Donation Process Step Two: DonaHon Decision Under Florida law, if the individual did not previously designate their wishes through the state's organ donor registry, donor card, driver license or other verifiable form of wri_en intent, the decision to donate life will fall to the next-of-kin. Families previously educated about organ will be be_er prepared to make this decision. The process of is thoroughly reviewed with every family considering giving the git of life.

14 The Donation Process Step Three: LocaHng Recipients Once the decision is confirmed, TransLife arranges extensive tests to obtain about blood type and make-up for each organ. Test results enable the matching process and ensure the safety of for recipients. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) medical matches among thousands registered on the transplant list. The country's Organ Procurement and Network is maintained by UNOS, as contracted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 15 The Donation Process Step Four - Recovery and Follow-up ATer all donated organs have been placed, TransLife schedules the arrival of transplant teams. At least two surgical teams are involved in dona@on. One team recovers the organ while a second team performs the transplant. Most dona@ons involve more than one organ and help to save several lives. For every dona@on, the recovery occurs during a surgical procedure that upholds the utmost respect for the donor. Following dona@on, TransLife sends a le_er to the donor family, sharing brief descrip@ons of the people receiving transplants. Pa@ent names are not provided out of respect for health care privacy. Le_er wri@ng between families and recipients is a common prac@ce, facilitated by our donor program. TransLife Family Services provides care for families following dona@on.
