4 How underfloor heating and cooling works Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water through a series of continuous loops that are fitted underneath your floor creating a large radiant surface that heats your room from the floor upwards. This radiant form of heating is much more comfortable than the convected heat provided by radiators which draws cold air across the floor, heating it and then convecting it upwards towards the ceiling. Underfloor cooling works in very much the same way as underfloor heating except the energy transfer is reversed. Where underfloor heating radiates thermal energy from the floor surface into the air space, underfloor cooling relies on warm air passing over the cooler floor surface which absorbs radiant energy from the air and reduces the air temperature in the room. This process of passing chilled water through the floor keeps the floor area cool which continually absorbs warm air from the room. Energy reaches into every corner of the room with underfloor heating ensuring there are no cold spots, no hot heads and no cold feet! Acting as the heart of the system, this sophisticated piece of equipment distributes warm water throughout the underfloor heating system. The most recent additions to the Ambiente range has been a collection of solutions to be fitted into existing buildings. This has developed as more and more people are seeing the major benefits of underfloor heating over traditional convectional heating methods and want to add it into their property. Here the critical factors are low build-up and minimal disturbance of existing floors, while maintaining a good enough output to heat a room effectively. Pipes are clipped or stapled onto an insulation layer, then the screed is laid on top. The warm pipes effectively heat up the whole screed slab, giving even and consistent heat output. 100 watts/m 2 Plated systems are used for joisted or battened floors and Ambiente offers a range of plated solutions to suit each application. The aluminium plate spans the joists or are fixed from underneath, acting as a support for the pipes as well as a spreading the heat to give an even heat output. 70 watts/m 2 Section A Section B AmbiClip AmbiTak AmbiCastellated AmbiPlate 20 AmbiPlate 30 AmbiPlate 80 series Edge and floor insulation is installed over the subfloor on to which cliprails are then fixed to by both the adhesive backing strip and barbed staples (where Ambiente is not supplying the insulation, checks should be made to ensure that the insulation is compatible with the cliprail system). Once the cliprails are secured in position, the underfloor heating pipework is laid in continuous loops and clipped down in accordance with the underfloor heating design drawings. Primarily this system is used in conjunction with the laminated and gridded EPS insulation board. This provides a strong base to fix to and the grid lines act as a guide to help install the pipework at the correct spacings. Edge and floor insulation is installed over the subfloor on to which the underfloor heating pipe is laid and fixed using barbed tacker staples. Where Ambiente is not supplying the insulation, checks should be made to ensure that the insulation is compatible with this system. The AmbiCastellated system provides a quick, flexible and effective form of heating within a screeded floor buildup as well as minimising the height of the overall floor construction. The castellated insulation panel incorporates the insulation and clipping system in one product. The product is available in a range of thicknesses and consists of a moulded plastic panel which is keyed to the insulation for stability - this also acts as a separating layer between the insulation and screed. The systems consists of aluminium diffuser plates being fixed directly on to the battens/ joists. The plates contain grooved channels into which the underfloor heating pipework is installed in continuous lengths and piped back to the underfloor heating manifold. Before the underfloor heating system is installed, insulation should be laid between the battens/joists and should be laid tight to the underside of the pipework to maximise heating output. Combining contemporary heating technology with traditional timber floors, the AmbiPlate 30 system is designed specifically for joisted floor constructions. Before the underfloor heating system is installed, mineral wool/fibre insulation, typically a minimum of 100mm, should be laid between the joists. Rigid insulation can also be used to achieve better thermal values but in all cases it is essential that the insulation is installed tight to the underside of the pipework as possible to maximise heating output. The AmbiPlate 80 series is designed specifically for retrofit or refurbishment projects. The aluminium plates, which are manufactured and rolled in accordance with the project design, can be installed from either below or above, depending on access. If installed from above, the plate is fixed centrally on top of the joists ready to accept the timber floor layer over the top (section A). If installing from below, the plate is fixed to the underside of the timber floor layer (section B). Low profile systems can be laid directly onto any solid floor surface to provide an even heat output with minimal reduction in floor build-up. 80 watts/m watts/m 2 70 watts/m 2 AmbiFloat 10 AmbiFloat 20 AmbiFloat 30 AmbiLowboard AmbiScreedboard AmbiChipboard AmbiFloat 10 system requires a flat and level sub floor for the insulation to fully support the floor finish on top. The insulation is pre-grooved to take the underfloor heating pipework and over laid with a thick foil to assist the distribution of heat. The polystyrene insulation panels are manufactured per project to suit the underfloor heating design drawings. The system is then overlaid with a fully floating floor deck onto which your floor finish is applied. In the case of wooden floors, this can be laid directly on to the insulation to minimise height buildup and maximise the heating output. The AmbiFloat 20 system provides a flexible and effective form of heating within battened floor buildups and can be used in both existing and new build applications with minimal effect to the overall floor build up. It can also be easily adapted to suit sprung sports floors, acoustic batten floors and over-battened floors. The AmbiFloat 30 system is designed specifically for joisted floor constructions and provides a stable and effective form of heating. Similar to the Ambiplate 30 system, the AmbiFloat 30 system incorporates the aluminium profile and insulation into one product. The insulation panels are made from high density insulation to provide increase strength and are available in various thicknesses starting from 25mm. AmbiLowboard can be used in existing and new build applications. It utilises the same concept as our AmbiFloat systems but has been scaled down using higher density materials to have minimal impact on the floor build-up, utilising Ambiente 12mm pipework. This system is suitable for both new and refurbishment applications. Wooden floors can be laid directly over the insulation layer. The AmbiScreedboard system can be used in existing and new build applications. It requires a flat and level sub floor for the screedboard to fully support the floor finish on top. The screedboard is pre-grooved to take a 12mm underfloor heating pipework. Having the properties of a screed with low thermal resistance, this system couples excellent output with low build-up. The AmbiChipboard system is another development of our low floor build-up range which is designed to provide a structural flooring solution that incorporates a 12mm underfloor heating pipe. A 6mm ply is required to be fixed down over a high grade chipboard. This protects the top of the pipe and provide extra strength to the floor. AmbiWall The latest addition to our range, the AmbiWall system incorporates laying heating pipes inside the build-up of the wall providing all-round radiant heat. Typically this involves pipes installed within pre-grooved insulation. AmbiAF The AmbiAF system is uniquely designed to incorporate underfloor heating into a raised access floor construction. A U-shaped bracket is mounted on to the pedestals on to which insulation profiles are installed. The 35mm x 100mm insulation panels are made of high density insulation and foiled to optimise the energy transfer. Modules can be easily dismounted and repositioned when office layout changes AmbiStructural The AmbiStructural system can be used in a wide variety of applications where a load bearing structural floor is required. Such systems can be commonly found in car show rooms and airport hangers where point loadings can be extremely high. This floor build up offers low cost and fast installation. Made out of stainless steel and tested to rigorous standards, they are available in various sizes from just two ports for a small system, up to 12 port versions for larger areas. In order to ensure total reliability and durability, our manifolds are factory tested to 10 bar pressure for operation within systems that will typically operate on less than 3 bar pressure. Our control systems range from simple dial thermostats to full internet and BMS compatible systems. Room temperature control for underfloor heating is measured by ambient room temperature controllers that are located in each zone. These are linked to the local manifold wiring centre where commands are sent to various relays and other outputs that require a signal. Designed to work with our low voltage thermostats, the Ambiente touchpad provides central control of your heating system. It features a colour touch screen capable of controlling of up to 32 thermostats. Each thermostat can be individually named allowing you to easily identify and adjust each zone on the network. PRT/HW-N PRT-N Net Monitor A new feature is the ability to program profiles. Profiles are a stored set of comfort levels that can be applied to a group or rooms as and when required. Remotely program the comfort level of all the networked thermostats from one central point and copy program settings from one thermostat to another across the network. Our controllers can be either hard wired or wi-fi and interfaced with your Building Management System giving you full remote control from your PC, laptop or phone. Wi-fi control Our five layered pipe is designed to give you complete peace of mind, that's why it comes with a 75 year warranty. PE-RT pipe PE-RT stands for polyethylene at raised temperature resistance. Polyethylene has excellent properties at high pressures and temperatures as well as being very flexible and easy to use. It is non-corrosive and has good resistance to frost. It is creep-resistant and has a high impact strength. The outer layer protects the oxygen barrier from mechanical damage and moisture ingress. Polymer adhesive A functionalised polythene that acts as an adhesive layer between the polyethylene and the oxygen barrier. EVOH oxygen barrier Prevents oxygen diffusion at up to 80 C. This is important with underfloor heating since a floor area laid with pipe at relevant spacings creates a huge surface area of plastic, making it vulnerable to its surroundings. It is therefore essential that the pipe prevents oxygen ingress which can cause unnecessary damage and costs. The pipe is installed with no joints within the floor and even when a pipe does need to be joined after the installation, a simple procedure of exposing and reconnecting the two ends is all that is required.
