1 PART 1-GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section SUMMARY A. The work of this Section includes provision of exterior timber decking, framing, sleepers and appurtenances necessary for the wood decking and related structures in the following locations: 1. Wood wharf at the central wharf B. Related work specified elsewhere: 1.03 SUBMITTALS 1. Section 03300, Cast-in-Place Concrete A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's specifications, data, and installation instructions for materials, components, accessories, and finishes of this Section including the following: 1. Material certificates for dimension lumber specified to comply with minimum allowable unit stresses. Indicate species and grade selected for each use and design values approved by the American Lumber Standard Committee's (ALSC) Board of Review. a. A certificate, issued by an accredited laboratory, attesting to minimum design stresses, as obtained from testing of samples taken from the batch to be supplied for this work, shall accompany this statement. b. Include example of identifying mark that will be exhibited on each timber piece as specified in Part 2 article, entitled "Materials, General" herein. 2. Wood treatment data as follows, including chemical treatment manufacturer's instructions for handling, storing, installing, and finishing treated materials. a. Timber Preservative Inspection: Submit the inspection report of an independent inspection agency that offered timber products requiring preservative treatment comply with AWPA standards. Identify treatment on each piece by the quality mark of an agency accredited by the Board of Review of the American Lumber Standard Committee. b. Include Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Consumer Information Sheets (CIS) associated with timber preservative treatment. Comply with all safety precautions indicated on MSDS and CIS. 3. Wood finish/seal materials B. Shop Drawings: Submit fabrication and installation details, including plans, elevations, sections, fastenings, and attachments to other work for review. Shop drawings shall indicate at a minimum: 1. Fabrication details 2. Framing details 3. Location of all joints (butted ends) of deck planks 4. Location and number of framing and decking fasteners C. Wood decking for initial selection: Material samples, 24 inches long, showing the full range of finishes available for products specified in the thickness and sizes shown on the Contract Drawings. D. Delivery Inspection List: Field inspect and submit a verification list of each treated timber member and each strapped bundle of treated lumber indicating the wording and lettering of the quality control markings, the species and the condition of the wood. Do not incorporate materials damaged in the transport from plant to site. Inspect all preservative treated wood, visually to ensure there are no excessive residual materials or preservative deposits. Material shall be clean and dry or it will be rejected due to environmental concerns QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Standard for Solid-Sawn Wood Decking: Comply with AITC 112. B. Mock Up/Field Sample for Verification: Construct 4' x 4' field sample of each type of wood decking for construction procedures, color, thickness, and finish/end seal. Include sleepers and other representative connection details, fitting condition at change of direction, and end conditions DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Delivery: Schedule delivery of materials at the site at such time as required for proper coordination of the work. Receive materials in manufacturer's unopened packages and bearing manufacturer's label. B. Keep materials under cover and dry. Protect from weather and contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber and decking. Provide for air circulation within and around stacks and under temporary coverings. C. Store all wood material in a dry, well-ventilated, weather tight place. D. Close-stack treated timber and lumber material in a manner that will prevent long timbers or preframed material from sagging or becoming crooked. Keep ground under and within 5 feet of such piles free of weeds, rubbish, and combustible materials. Protect materials from weather. Handle treated timber with ropes or chain slings without dropping, breaking outer fibers, bruising, or penetrating surface with tools. Do not use cant dogs, peaveys, hooks, or pike poles. Protect timber and hardware from damage. E. Protect all wood material from contamination with protective coverings as recommended by the supplier PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Field Measurements: Verify decking dimensions by field measurements before fabrication and indicate field measurements on Shop Drawings. B. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS, GENERAL A. General: Comply with DOC PS 20 and with applicable grading rules of inspection agencies certified by ALSC's Board of Review. ERIE CANAL HARBOR Page 474

3 B. Moisture Content: Provide wood decking with 12 percent maximum moisture content at time of dressing. C. Provide timber and wood deck materials which have been selected for their surface flatness, smoothness, and freedom from surface blemishes where exposed to view in the finished unit. Exposed-to-view surfaces which exhibit pitting, seam marks, roller marks, "oil-canning" stains, discoloration, or other imperfections on finished units will not be acceptable. D. All lumber shall be identified and branded with the grade mark of a recognized association or independent inspection agency using the specific grading requirements of an association recognized as covering the species used. The association or independent inspection agency shall be certified by the ALSC Board of Review, to grade the species used. E. Timber and lumber sizes as shown on drawings are nominal sizes and section properties of Standard Dressed Sawn Lumber (S1S) as defined by ANSI/NfoPA-NDS-1991, National Design Specification for Wood Construction, unless noted otherwise. 1. Wood members specifically dimensioned shall have a net section bearing the dimensions noted on drawings, as opposed to nominal sizes. F. Timbers to be used in construction of all wood items shall be seasoned in order to minimize the amount of checking after installation. The Contractor shall guarantee the wood against checking and splits for the duration of the Work WOOD DECKING A. Softwood Decking: Provide solid rough sawn Southern Yellow Pine No. 1 or better timber and lumber, fabricated in the sizes and dimensions as indicated on the contract drawings or specified herein. Provide deck softwood in maximum lengths possible to suit deck configurations. 1. Softwood decking shall be solid wood milled decking construction without laminations. 2. General: Provide dimension lumber and timber of grades indicated or specified according to the ALSC national grading rule (NGR) provisions of the inspection agency indicated. 3. Preservative treat as specified in article entitled "Preservative Treatment." 4. All decking shall be further sorted by the producer/manufacturer to meet the following requirements: a. Knots - all edges & ends shall be free from knots. b. Ring shake - not allowed. c. Splits and checks - none. d. Decay - not al lowed. e. All timbers shall be dense, containing not less than 6 annular rings per inch and 1/3 or more of summer wood. f. Moisture content: perwic standards; not greater than 12 percent maximum; air-dry or kiln-dry unless otherwise shown. B. Accessory materials and components: 1. 4 C. Fabrication: a. Provide high quality paraffin or water based wax emulsion transparent seal treatment on cut ends of wood units. Apply in shop as soon as possible after cutting. b. Furnish wood seal finish material for application in field if wood deck units are field cut and for touch up. 1. Mill wood decking to uniform dimensions required with surfaces smooth, uniform, and without imperfections. 2. Cut ends shall be straight, plumb, and smooth surfaced. 3. Holes for all connectors (bolts, lag screws, etc.) Shall be predrilled. D. Finish: Shop finish and seal ends as specified and before leaving shop environment. All hardwood decking material shall be delivered sealed at cross ends with approved transparent paraffin in order to prevent rapid loss of moisture WOOD DECK FRAMING A. General: Provide dimension lumber and timber of grades indicated according to the ALSC national grading rule (NGR) provisions of the inspection agency indicated. B. Framing: Provide solid sawn lumber and timbers, rough sawn Southern Yellow Pine No. 2 or better. Preservative treat as specified in article entitled "Preservative Treatment." C. Fabrication: 1. Timber members receiving lag screws shall have predrilled diameter holes ready to accept the lag screws. 2. Provide lumber and timber in longest possible lengths to suit condition of installation based on field measurements. 3. Cut ends shall be straight, plumb, and smooth surfaced. m 2.04 PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT A. To the extent practical, fabricate lumber, timbers and decking before preservative treatment according to AWPA Standard U1 and appropriate AWPA use categories. Each piece of treated lumber or timber shall be branded, by the producer, in accordance with AWPAU1. m B. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of treated wood products. C. Furnish preservative treatment material application in field at field cut and hole drilling and for touch up WOOD PILES A. General: Provide new pressure treated wood piles in conformance with the Drawings and other provisions of this Section. ERIE CANAL HARBOR Page 476

5 2.06 FASTENERS A. General: Provide fasteners of size and type that comply with requirements specified in this article for material and manufacture; stainless steel ASTM Type 318, unless otherwise noted. B. Wood Screws: Stainless steel lag bolts complying with ASTM Type 318. C. Lag Bolts: Stainless steel bolts complying with ASTM Type 318. D. Bolts: Stainless steel bolts complying with ASTM Type 318; with stainless steel hex nuts and, where indicated, flat washers. E. Deck lag bolts shall be 3/8" stainless steel ASTM Type 318. The hole for bolts shall be 1/16" diameter smaller than the bolt diameter. All bolts shall be countersunk 3/8"and holes filled with silicone sealer. F. Carriage Bolts: Round head with square neck, stainless steel ASTM Type 318. G. Pile Caps: Copper, ASTM B 101 cold-rolled copper sheet, not less than 20 oz/sq. ft. (0.7 mm thick). Secure with copper roofing nails. H. Joist Hangers and Metal Anchorage Hardware: Type and size as indicated on the drawings. Unless otherwise indicated, galvanize anchors by the hot-dip process in accordance with ASTM A23/A123M or ASTM A153/A153M, as applicable. PART 3- EXECUTION 3.01 PREPARATION A. Examination: Examine conditions of work in place before beginning work; report defects. B. Measurements: Take field measurements; report variance between Contract/Shop Drawings and field dimensions INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. General: Install in conformance with referenced standards, manufacturer's written directions, as shown, and as specified. B. Cut, shape, bevel, and face timbers prior to plant preservative treatment. Provide protective equipment for personnel fabricating, field treating, or handling materials treated with creosote or water borne salts. Refer to "MSDS and CIS" submittal requirements. C. Cut and frame lumber and timber so that joints will fit over contact surface. D. Boring Holes: 1. Bore holes for fasteners with a bit 1/16 inch less in diameter than the pin or dowel. 2. Bore holes for bolts with a bit 1/16 inch larger in diameter than bolt or other fastener. 3. Bore holes for wood screws and lag bolts in two parts. Make lead hole for shank the same diameter as shank. Make lead hole for the threaded portion approximately two thirds of the shank diameter. 4. Bore holes in small timbers for boat or wire spikes with a bit of the same diameter or smallest dimension of the spike to prevent splitting. ERIE CANAL HARBOR Page 477

6 5. Counterbore for countersinking wherever smooth faces are indicated or specified WOOD DECK FRAMING A. Discard units of material with defects that impair quality of rough carpentry and that are too small to use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. B. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted. C. Framing, Sleepers, or Stringers: Place crown up and, if possible, the better edge of framing, sleepers, or stringers down. Tops of stringers shall not vary from a plane more than will permit bearing of the floor on stringers. Secure members to substrate in accordance with details. Fit rough carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as required for accurate fit. Correlate location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow attachment of other construction. D. Apply field treatment complying with AWPA U1 to cut surfaces of preservative-treated lumber and plywood. E. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, complying with published requirements of manufacturers WOOD PILES A. Fabricate upper and lower ends of piles to accommodate attachment configurations shown on the Drawings. Use 12-inch diameter piles along the Buffalo River, where some piles will be inserted into 12-inch pipes. Inserted piles should overlap edges of pipes. B. Install copper cap on top of piles per Drawings. Lay sheet copper over top of pile. Cut sides on an angle at regular intervals and bend down over sides of pile. Hammer to shape of pile. Secure overlapping pieces to pile with copper roofing nails. Solder vertical joints smooth. Provide one sample for approval by Architect prior to commencing work WOOD DECKING A. Prior to installation of decking, check framing and/or sleepers for level or slope as indicated on the drawings. Do necessary hit or miss planing of high spots to provide a continuously level or sloped deck surface as indicated. B. Decking: 1. Secure to framing, sleepers, or stringers as indicated on the drawings. 2. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing wood decking. 3. Make decking of a single thickness of plank supported by framing or sleepers. Grade planks as to thickness and lay so that adjacent planks vary less than 1/16 inch. Lay plank with heart side down transverse to the pier width with spacing between the planks of 1/4" minimum and 3/8" maximum. 4. Deck planks shall be single lengths when deck width is 12 feet or less. Where greater than 12 feet, planks shall be laid in "running bond" with butted joints staggered randomly over joists or sleepers, butt ends square. 5. Joints of planks shall be staggered so as not to have adjacent joints. 6. Secure each plank to each framing member, sleeper, or stringer with at least two bolts with pre-drilled holes. Place bolts at least 2-1/8 inches from edges of the plank. Cut ends of planks parallel to edge of pier. ERIE CANAL HARBOR Page 478

7 C. Cutting, fitting, and placement: Pre-drill holes for fasteners. D. All field cut decking wood shall have cut ends re-finished at edges and treated (sealed) on cut surface as specified in part 2 paragraph entitled "Finish" FIELD TREATMENT A. Timberwork: Field treat cuts, bevels, notches, re-facing and abrasions made in the field in preservative treated timbers in accordance with AWPA U1, MSDS and CIS. Wood preservatives are restricted use pesticides and shall be applied according to applicable standards. Trim cuts and abrasions before field treatment. Coat depressions or openings around bolt holes, joints, or gaps including recesses formed by counterboring, with preservative treatment used for timber; and after bolt or screw is in place. B. Galvanized Surfaces: Repair and recoat zinc coating which has been field or shop cut, burned by welding, abraded, or otherwise damaged to such an extent as to expose the base metal. Thoroughly clean the damaged areas by wire brushing and remove traces of welding flux and loose or cracked zinc coating prior to painting. Paint cleaned area with two coats of zinc oxide zinc dust paint conforming to MIL P Compound paint with a suitable vehicle in a ratio of one part zinc oxide to four parts zinc dust by weight PROTECTION A. Restore finishes damaged during installation and construction period so no evidence remains of corrective work. Retum items that cannot be refinished in the field to the shop; make required alterations and refinish entire unit, or provide new units. END OF SECTION ERIE CANAL HARBOR Page 479
