2 Main Purpose: Responsible to: Working Hours: To be a positive member of staff To inspire all children to reach their potential To be a PE Specialist To further develop PE within the school, ensuring it is a part of everyday school life and ensure Brabyns is as a PE Centre of Excellence To teach other lessons as required and ideally coordinate another subject Headteacher & Leadership Team Available for work for 190 days per academic year Attendance of all staff training days and meetings Events out of school hours that promote PE, e.g. clubs and matches. Additionally any whole school events, eg School Play and Carnival The core working hours for teachers are 8.10am pm during term time, plus the attendance to all staff meetings and the running of clubs & matches. To lead a few days over the year at the School s Activity Camps (for additional pay) A. General teaching and other responsibilities All staff within the school should endeavour to provide the best opportunities possible to inspire the children and to promote the ethos of the school. The ability to work as a supportive member of a team and to be flexible is essential. The responsibilities of a teacher are complex and extensive; catering for a wide range of children s needs and providing provision and organisation of a variety of learning experiences. In addition to the PE Specialist role you will be required to teach some other subject lessons to be agreed by the school and post holder. 1. The teaching and curriculum should; be appropriate to the children s individual physical, intellectual, creative, emotional and social needs, ensuring it closely matches the stages of development and abilities of the children; take into account best practice as defined in the Early Years & Foundation Stage Learning Goals and the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 & 2 and the specific demands of independent schools examinations. The curriculum at Years 5 & 6 reflects the intent of Brabyns Preparatory School to provide for a maximum choice of secondary education at age Ensure all opportunities for the use of ICT are utilised. 3. The promotion of the highest possible standards of behaviour, commitment and achievement by the children. 4. The provision of an appropriate and stimulating learning area, including effective classroom organisation which provides for efficient use and storage of necessary resources so they can, as far as possible, be used and maintained by the children. 5. Monitoring the children's work so that learning experiences and children s progress can be effectively monitored to ensure progression. 6. Attractive display and presentation of children s work showing the high value placed on all children s genuine efforts, along with the provision of interactive displays. 7. The sensitive and systematic marking of all children s work. 8. The creation of a lively and challenging environment in which imagination, investigation, questioning and enquiry are apparent so that children can be helped to develop independence of thought. 9. To follow the school s Mind Kind programmes. 10. Awareness of developments in education so as to continually update and grow in professional expertise. This includes attendance at all school-run training sessions. 11. To support, maintain and develop the aims and policies of the school. 12. To look for professional development opportunities and to attend courses, training sessions etc. as appropriate, including in all school led training. Where appropriate lead training for other staff in the school (and on occasions in other schools).
3 13. To work in partnership with parents. 14. To help with the marketing of the school as and when appropriate. 15. To carry out break and lunchtime duties as appropriate. 16. To understand and accept the value of redefining their duties and responsibilities by mutual agreement with the Headteacher, as and when the need arises. 17. Medium and short term planning - The medium term planning is to be completed half-termly, the aims are to be taken from the National Curriculum / School Subject Policy documents. The short term planning will give more detailed lesson plans based upon the medium term planning and include appropriate differentiation. 18. To work in liaison with the other teachers so as to encompass cross-curricular teaching. B. Brabyns Teaching Standards All teachers working at Brabyns are expected to meet the standards below. These form part of the person specification for the role. and desired skills and experiences are stated in Section E. 4 C. PE Specialist Role The responsibilities involve taking stock of the current practice in PE and considering expectations for the future. It is important to check the place of this subject in relation to the School Development Plan and to aid the process of school improvement by evaluating current needs in terms of resources, policy documents, cross key stage links and cross curricular links. The duties required of the post holder are: 1. To ensure PE is an integral part of the school and to make Brabyns a PE centre of excellence. 2. To co-ordinate PE, including leading subject meetings and liaising with other staff and providing support as appropriate. 3. To teach all children in the school PE, implementing good practice in terms of child-centred learning, classroom organisation, the learning environment, display, resource and expectations of the children. 4. To be responsible for the PE curriculum, planning, assessment, recording and monitoring of children's progress and the subject in general, and as appropriate consult with colleagues. 5. To annually review the PE policy and scheme of work and advise the Headteacher as to proposed policy document changes. 6. To organise PE activities, throughout the school week. Including extra-curricular activities, team practices (football, high-5, cricket etc.) and matches, accommodating children of all abilities. It is expected the PE specialist will run a minimum of 4 clubs per week. 7. To be responsible for the Hall and playground, including the health and safety of these areas. 8. To provide a relaxing yet stimulating and inspiring environment. 9. To measure progress across each year group making use of school's present assessment procedures and developing new ones as appropriate and evaluating pupils' work. 10. To assist in developing and encouraging parental involvement in the life of the school, through PE. 11. To help the performing arts specialist with the organisation of the dance/drama/musical performance annually. 12. To look for opportunities to promote PE to wider audiences, including the outside community. 13. To organise opportunities for children to explore PE with the help of outside agencies, including visits and visitors. At least one curriculum visit/visitor should be led each year. 14. To coordinate the school s club programme including coordinating the teaching carried out by any outside coaches. 15. To find and attend appropriate training courses and to disseminate appropriate acquired information to other staff. This will include leading training for activity camp staff. 16. To manage current resources, making an inventory if necessary, and recommending priorities to provide an appropriate and balanced range of resources. 17. To arrange fixtures in a variety of sports. This may include some being available at some weekends, e.g. tournaments, swimming gala, cross-country etc. 18. To lead and organise annual sports afternoons and Swimming Galas. 19. To manage the allocated subject budget. D. Additional Coordinator Role The coordination role aspect is there for information as to what would be required of this part of the role, and not necessarily part of the job. Being an outstanding teacher and a PE specialist is the main criteria for the job, due to other changes in our staffing, there is some flexibility in the additional teaching/coordination aspects to this post. It may be the successful candidate is able to coordinate another subject(s). If this was the case the job description would be reviewed accordingly and additional lessons to be taught agreed between the school and the post holder. Below are the general requirements of a coordinator. These would be adapted depending on the subject (if any) that were coordinated in addition to PE. Coordinators are requires to:-
5 1. Review present situation in relation to quality of teaching and learning. This may involve an analysis of children's work across the school. 2. Review present policy document and scheme of work, and decide whether there needs to be modifications, additions or major changes. Where there are more than one subject coordinators effective liaison will be necessary to ensure continuity and progression. 3. Advise the Headteacher as to proposed policy document changes. 4. Aid the process of school improvement by evaluating current needs in terms of resources, policy documents, cross key stage links and cross curricular links. 5. Measure progress across each year group making use of school's present assessment procedures and additional evaluation of pupils' work. 6. Provide support to colleagues where appropriate, in aiding the delivery of the curriculum. 7. Manage current resources, making an inventory if necessary and making recommendations as to priorities. 8. Manage the allocated subject budget. 9. Plan and organise curriculum related visits/speakers to classes or assemblies where appropriate. 10. Have regard for a good balance of books, posters, videos, software and artefacts as appropriate. 11. To contribute to and/or lead whole school and Key Stage staff meetings where appropriate. 12. To replenish library stock when appropriate. 13. To coordinate the displays in any subject rooms. E: & Desirable Skills & Experiences The post holder needs to be an adaptable, supportive, vigilant, positive and willing member of staff and to enjoy working with children.
