1 JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Second in Department P E & Public Services Salary/Grade: Management Range A 36,896-39,487 Responsible to: Head of Subject In addition to the main purposes and duties of a teacher at the college Main Purpose of the Post To assist the Head of Subject in the development, delivery and quality assurance of courses within the area, with specific responsibility for AS/A Level courses. To support the Head of Subject to lead the designated curriculum area by proactive and positive management. To assist the Head of Subject to ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum in accordance with the aims of the College and the curricular policies determined by the Governing Body and Principal of the College. To assist the Head of Subject to monitor and support the overall progress and development of students and ensure positive outcomes for all. To assist the Head of Subject to ensure the recruitment and deployment of teaching staff and the deployment of financial and physical resources to support the curriculum area. To lead on competitive sport areas for the PE department and ensure our continued involvement in the North West leagues with specific responsibility for football, rugby, cricket and basketball. To contribute to college-wide activities and support the college mission and ethos. Main Duties: 1. Operational/Strategic Planning 1.1 co-ordinate the development of resources, schemes of work, assessment and marking policies and teaching strategies in the curriculum area in line with college policies and procedures. 1.2 co-ordinate the day-to-day management, control and operation of course provision within the curriculum areas, including effective deployment of staff and physical resources. 1.3 actively monitor and follow up student absences and withdrawals. 1.4 work with colleagues to formulate aims and objectives for the curriculum areas which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims and objectives of the College.

2 1.5 work with the ILT Co-ordinator to foster and oversee the application of ILT in the curriculum area, including the development of materials for Independent Learning, use of the VLE and e/m-learning. 1.6 promote the maintenance and transfer of good practice in teaching and learning. 1.7 attend meetings in accordance with the college s schedule (and to keep appropriate minutes/records where appropriate). 1.8 deputise for the Head of Subject where necessary. 1.9 implement College Policies and Procedures especially with regard to equality and diversity and safeguarding. 2. Teaching 2.1 Plan and organise learning experiences, either directly (through teaching) or indirectly (through the management of learning and assessment) which takes account of the range of ability and prior achievement of students within a class set and the individual learning needs of students. 2.2 Use, or oversee, a range of appropriate teaching and assessment strategies which incorporate processes to ensure that effective learning has taken place. 2.3 Fully adhere to the college assessment policy and procedures 2.4 Fully utilise teaching time to support learners and liaise with Pastoral and Additional Learning Support teams. 2.4 Make effective use of resources and learning technology e.g. e/m learning and the college VLE appropriate to the subject matter/skill being taught. 2.5 Create a purposeful, positive and supportive teaching environment, sensitive to equal opportunity, individual needs and health and safety issues. 3. Curriculum Provision and Development 3.1 ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and cost-effective curriculum programme which complements the college s strategic objectives. 3.2 ensure that Inclusive Learning Initiatives are implemented in the programme area and that effective support is provided for students through collaborative working relationships with pastoral and additional learning support teams. 3.3 actively monitor and respond to curriculum development and initiatives at national, regional and local levels. 3.4 maintain accreditation with the relevant examination and validating bodies. 3.5 be responsible for the development of Functional Skills (where applicable). 3.6 contribute to the enrichment programme across college. 4. Staffing Staff Development 4.1 work with the Deputy Principal, the Curriculum Director to ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes designed to meet such needs.

3 Recruitment/Deployment of Staff 4.2 monitor arrangements for classes when staff are absent, ensuring appropriate cover within the programme area or liaising with Curriculum Director to secure supply cover. 4.3 participate in the interview process for teaching posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with College procedures. 4.4 promote teamwork and motivate staff to ensure effective working relations. 5. Students Safeguarding 5.1 To commit to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people ensuring effective implementation of the safeguarding policy and procedures. Discipline 5.2 To take responsibility for promoting good standards of behaviour and conduct in students by implementing and monitoring/reporting breaches of the Student Conduct and Discipline policy. Support for Students 5.3 Work collaboratively with pastoral and additional learning support teams to ensure that all students, regardless of ability receive the support they need to achieve their potential. Learner Involvement 5.4 Contribute to the development and implementation of the Learner Involvement Strategy in order to improve the quality of provision and to appropriately to learner needs. 5.5 Respond to learner voice by adapting approaches to teaching, learning assessment to meet individual learner needs. 5.6 Provide students with subject-specific support in line with their Individual Learning Plans. 5.7 Produce reports and references for students periodically and attend parents evenings. 5.8 Monitor and review students progress in line with the College s student tracking and make appropriate interventions as and when required.

Quality Assurance 6.1 ensure the effective operation of quality assurance systems. 6.2 establish the process of the setting of targets within the curriculum areas and to work towards their achievement. 6.3 establish common standards of practice within the curriculum areas and develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles. 6.4 contribute to the College procedures for lesson observation. 6.5 implement College quality procedures and to ensure standardisation across the curriculum areas. 6.6 monitor and evaluate the curriculum area in line with agreed College procedures including evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria. 6.7 seek/implement modification and improvement where required. 6.8 ensure that the curriculum area s quality procedures meet the requirements of Self- Assessment and the Strategic Plan. 7. Equality and Diversity 7.1 Create a purposeful, positive and supportive teaching environment, sensitive to and diversity. 8. Management Information and Administration 8.1 ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the curriculum areas on the management information system. 8.2 collect, analyse and evaluate performance data. 8.3 identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports; setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action taken. 8.4 produce reports within the quality assurance cycle. 8.5 produce reports on examination performance, including the use of value-added data and to monitor this in each subject area. 8.6 take decisions regarding the entry of students for external examinations and for checking details of examination entries within the programme areas. 8.7 ensure that correct procedures are followed for the organisation of external assessments. 9. Communications 9.1 ensure that all members of the curriculum area are familiar with the college aims and objectives. 9.2 ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with the parents of students. 9.3 liaise with relevant external bodies as appropriate. 9.4 Attend College events, briefings and meetings as part of the College schedule e.g. interview evenings, parents evenings, open events.

5 9.5 Use the College s systems, policies and procedures to communicate issues as necessary. 9.6 Use the college student tracking system to flag student concerns and commendations 9.7 Work collaboratively with the college pastoral and additional learning support Teams in the best interest of learners. 10. Marketing and Liaison 10.1 contribute to the College s liaison and marketing activities, e.g. the collection of material for press releases, the development of effective subject links with partner schools and the community, attendance where necessary at liaison events in partner schools and the effective promotion of the curriculum areas at Open Days/Evenings and other events in partner schools and the wider community interview prospective students actively promote the development of effective curriculum links with external agencies contribute to matters relating to Liaison, Marketing and Publicity and to work with the Assistant Principal (Admissions and Liaison) to ensure that the programme areas liaison programme conforms to and enhances the work of the rest of the College oversee close curriculum links with local partner high schools and other high schools. 11. Management of Resources 11.1 oversee the management, the available resources of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down, including deploying the relevant budget, acting as a cost centre holder, requisitioning, organising and maintaining equipment and stock, and keeping appropriate records identify, if appropriate, opportunities for income generation and to follow them through to implementation co-operate with other subject areas to ensure a sharing and effective usage of resources to the benefit of the College and the students work with the Curriculum Director in order to ensure that the curriculum area s teaching commitments are effectively and efficiently time-tabled and roomed oversee the maintenance of an attractive working environment in teaching rooms. 12. Other 12.1 Contribute to the college mission and ethos and support the aims and objectives of the College Follow and comply with the College s policies and procedures as outlined in the Staff Handbook and take responsibility for the duty of care in respect of the levels of Health & Safety across the College To attend meetings in accordance with the College meetings schedule To undertake any other duties of an equal nature as assigned by the Principal or designated alternate. 9 P E & Public Services Department The PE and Public Services department at Ashton Sixth Form College currently offers Level 2 (Diploma) in Public Services and Level 3 (Extended Diploma) qualifications in Public Services and Sport and we deliver AS and A level Physical Education (AQA). There are 9 members of staff and a dedicated PE/PS technician who helps coordinate college sports, enrichment sporting activities and provides support for lessons. We are a well-resourced department with excellent football pitches, an astro-turf and a large sports hall and there are plans to move to new teaching classrooms with specialist equipment and to install a fully equipped fitness suite. The staff are highly dedicated and strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for our learners. We are continually reviewing our sporting provision to ensure that the students have access to a wide variety of sports either through enrichment or through our successful involvement in the North West Colleges Leagues.
