1 Includes Teddy Bear Picnics for families with younger Bradford Libraries This Summer Starts Saturday 16th July until Saturday 10th September 2016 Events for children from 4 to 12 years Celebrating the Roald Dahl centenary Bradford Libraries Service

2 Celebrating the Roald Dahl centenary, the challenge is a national scheme to encourage primary age children to read for enjoyment throughout the summer holidays while at the same time maintaining reading levels for returning back to school in September. All our libraries will be involved in the summer reading challenge. Every child who joins the Big Friendly Read will receive a fold-up wallet with six limited edition Quentin Blake collector cards each celebrating a popular Dahl theme: Mischief; Invention; Adventure; Wordplay; Child Champions and Friendship. There are also bookmarks, fortune tellers, door hangers, Rainbow Glasses and wristbands to collect. Every child who reads 6 books will receive a certificate and medal complete with presentation wallet, all featuring the amazing artwork of Roald Dahl s principal illustrator, Quentin Blake. Both are fantastic to take back to school in September to impress your teachers and friends! The summer reading challenge gives children a great chance to have fun with books and to feel rewarded for reading. It is not about children reading as many books as they can; it s about children enjoying what they read, finding out more about books they like and knowing how to find the books they re interested in and sharing reading time with you! It also means that your child continues to read throughout the summer, enabling your child to return to school in September with maintained or improved reading skills. The Big Friendly Read will encourage reading on a giant scale and all our libraries will have activities celebrating Roald Dahl and inspired by Dahl s wonderful stories from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to The Twits, Matilda and of course, The Big Friendly Giant we ll have something for all children (and parents too!). To find out library opening times and more details please visit or contact your local library. The wording in this publication can be made available in other formats such as large print and Braille. Please call
