Retirement Announcement Gail Williams, Assistant Director of Care This news is delivered with mixed feelings, as we announce Gail Williams retirement effective September 1, Gail has decided that the time has come to retire. Gail joined the Fairmount Home team as a Registered Nurse during the summer of 2003, and she accepted the ADOC position in December She has always been diligent in promoting and living the Gentlecare TM philosophy that makes Fairmount Home unique. Gail has contributed 13 years of experience to Fairmount Home, and her contributions and achievements will not be forgotten. Please join me in wishing Gail all the best in the next steps of her journey. FAIRMOUNT AUXILIARY NEWS Tuesday, April 5, 1 pm in the Auditorium Tuesday, May 03, 1pm in the Auditorium Next Meeting Dates SPECIAL NOTICE - We are planning on having a GARAGE SALE - to be held in the auditorium on SATURDAY, JUNE 4th, between 12:00 noon and 3 p.m. We are looking for donations for the sale. We would ask that all donated items be clean and in good shape. As we have few places in which to dispose of unsold items at the end of the sale, we request that donations be on the small side - able to be put on top of a table for the sale. We are particularly

2 interested in obtaining knick knacks, jewellery, china, current books, collections, pictures and frames, and other small items usually associated with garage sales. Staff, residents, fellow volunteers and friends of Fairmount may begin bringing in items immediately and up until the morning of our sale. If items can be brought in early, then we will be able to sort the items by type and price in advance of the sale date. Items may be left with Kym St. Pierre, volunteer co-ordinator. If anyone has quality items that they may wish to donate, we will separate these items and have a silent auction either on the day of our sale or commencing prior to the date of sale and ending on the sale date. Welcome new Interdisciplinary Assistant Jackie is now the editor of the Grapevine Gazette and will be producing future issues. She has been working at Fairmount Home since September 2015 FAMILY COUNCIL Family Councils strive to provide a safe forum for families to share experiences, receive information and mutual support, discuss and seek solutions to common concerns and establish meaningful lines of communication between families and staff. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for our residents. If any family members or persons of importance to residents are interested in forming a Family Council, or would like more information about what is involved, please contact our Director of Care at extension 510. April 22 is Earth Day!

3 Lobby Display in March RECREACTION THERAPY WE MAKE LIFE FUN! Shoe clinics at Fairmount Tammy Deschamps, Rehabilitation Assistant As most of you know, supportive and properly fitted footwear can help prevent falls, encourage mobility, prevent pressure areas on feet, and support the proper alignment of joints of the feet and ankles. Some residents are unable to go to an appointment outside of Fairmount Home due to issues with their mobility, behaviors, or time restrictions for family to accompany them. We are very excited to announce the return of Shoe Clinics to Fairmount Home. We will be offering two shoe clinics per year. One will be held in the Spring, and the other will take place in the Fall. A representative from Active Orthopedics will be here on April 18, 2016 to measure residents for shoes or compression stockings by appointment only. Appointments will start at 9:30 am. To book an appointment for a resident please contact ext 562. Payment options include: Visa, Mastercard, debit and cash that can be paid at the Active Orthopedic Office, or by credit card over the phone. Active Orthopedics will contact the POA with full cost and arrangements for payment can be made at that time. Address for Active Orthopedic Solutions is 1469 Princess Street. If so, please send your address to our Programming Department - mclyde@frontenaccounty.ca Recreation Update Katie Johnson (#571) and Melissa Clyde (#572) March came in like a lion but it also brought with it some spring-like weather! Residents at Fairmount could not be more thrilled! We celebrated St. Patrick s Day with an Irish style pub on Friday March 11 th. We all enjoyed the Irish music by the Manning Brothers Duo and the green beer was a real hit! On Thursday March 17 th we donned our green clothes once again for a St. Patrick s Day party with entertainment by Doug Barnes. Doug is a real favourite among our residents, so it was a real toe-tapping good time! And the Shamrock Shakes, made by our dietary, staff certainly hit the spot!

5 At the very end of March, we welcomed the arrival of spring with a party and music by Steve and Penny. Residents enjoyed dancing, treats and door prizes! It s always a good time when the Lloyds come to perform for us! We also celebrated Easter in March. Residents on 1 North made Easter Bonnets with help from some of our talented volunteers. We also made Easter door hangers and enjoyed some tasty Easter treats that we baked in the kitchen! On Thursday March 24th residents and family enjoyed an Easter tea party with entertainment by our fabulous volunteer Ken Balkwill. EASTER BONNETS Our Kindness Circle was very busy this month spreading generosity to those in need. We made sandwiches and baked cookies for the Kingston Street Mission, and we made casseroles for In from the Cold Shelter. We also started collecting non-perishable food items for the South Frontenac Community Services Food Bank. Thanks to those who have made donations to help this very worthy cause. In April, our Kindness Circle will be busy raising money for the Alzheimer Society keep an eye out for ways you can support us! We also celebrate our incredible volunteers in April with our annual Volunteer Appreciation week. It would not be possible for us to offer the amazing programs we have here at Fairmount if it weren t for the helpful hands of our talented volunteers. Be sure to thank a volunteer the next time you see them in the home! 1 North residents were busy folding up a storm during our Fabulous Folders Folding program. Residents enjoy folding towels and shirt savers and benefit from participating in purposeful activity. We also sew buttons on blouses, hem pants and even do some ironing during the program. Our youngest Fairmount volunteer, Myles, also got in on the action this month and helped the ladies with the folding! Way to go!

6 Our young friends from École Mille Iles visited in March, and we enjoyed a tea party on 2 South. Residents loved visiting with the youth, and we compared stories of growing up today versus in the past. Our school aged friends will be visiting again in April to do some baking and make some crafts. April looks as though it will be very busy! All month long we will be raising money for our Walk for Memories sponsored by the Alzheimer s Society. The walk will take place Saturday May 7 th at Polson Park Public School, and we are looking forward to raising money to support our walkers. This is such an important cause to us at Fairmount, and we thank you in advance for your support. Volunteer Corner Kym St.Pierre, extension #581 Memory Care Lunch and Learn Session On Monday, April 25, 2016 from 11:00 1:00, we will be hosting, in partnership with Alzheimer Society of Kingston, our first Lunch and Learn Session of the year. This session will assist some of our newer volunteers to have a better understanding of communication techniques when working with residents with Alzheimer s disease and dementia. This is a refresher course for the volunteers who have been to one of these workshops in the past, if they choose to attend. With Alzheimer s disease and dementia on the rise, it is very helpful to understand the disease when working with these residents. All volunteers are welcome to attend whether a brand new or veteran volunteer. The signup sheet will be in the Volunteer Lounge. If you are interested in attending this workshop, please sign up as soon as possible. National Volunteer Week This year National Volunteer Week is from April We are hosting our annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner on Wednesday, April 13 to show our fantastic Fairmount Volunteer team just how much we appreciate the almost 7,000 hours they gave to our Home in 2015.

7 Advance Care Planning in South East Ontario By: Nurse Practitioner April 16th is National Advance Care Planning Day - The South East Ontario Advance Care Planning (ACP) and Health Care Consent (HCC) Working Group and Broader Membership encourage you to learn about Advance Care Planning this April. What is Advance Care Planning? It is a process of planning for the kind of care you would want if you could not speak for yourself. The process may include the following steps and may not occur in the order listed. THINK about what is important to you (your values and beliefs). What makes life meaningful? LEARN about your care options. What are the procedures or treatments that might be offered? Which would you want or not want? Do you understand the risks and benefits? DECIDE who will speak on your behalf. Choose a person who you trust that would be willing and able to make future decisions if you were not mentally capable to give or refuse consent for treatment. TALK about your wishes, values and beliefs with your Substitute Decision Maker, family, friends and health care providers. This is a good opportunity to talk about the quality of life that you want to have. RECORD if you wish, your Substitute Decision Maker on your Power of Attorney for Personal Care (POAPC). You can download a free kit to complete this yourself from: REVIEW and REVISE your plan regularly with your Substitute Decision maker, especially when something in life changes. Your Advance Care Planning wishes are meant to guide your Substitute Decision Maker. For more Ontario relevant resources on Advance Care Planning ask one of our Registered Nurses (RNs) or Nurse Practitioner (NP).
