3 Dear Parents, November 2015 Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Your son/daughter has expressed an interest in participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This is a great opportunity for our students at Exmouth Community College as there are many benefits in achieving this award. As well as being internationally recognised, colleges, universities and employers all look upon the completion of the Duke of Edinburgh Award very favourably. The programme is balanced and wide ranging, and it is designed to meet the needs of all abilities. Your son/daughter will choose their own agenda allowing them the opportunity to tailor the scheme to meet their own interests. Not only will it provide them with the opportunity to try out new and exciting things, it will give them skills for life and memories that will last a lifetime. The Bronze Award is offered from Year 10 onwards and the Silver Award, from Year 11 onwards and there are four sections at Bronze and Silver level to complete. Participants select their overall timescales and programme objectives in each of the following areas: Volunteering: Undertaking service to individuals or the community. Physical: Improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities. Skills: Developing practical and social skills and personal interests. Expedition: Planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey of two days and one night at Bronze level and three days and two nights at silver. Each section must be done for a minimum period of time and must be assessed by someone with knowledge in that particular activity (but it cannot be a family member). A minimum of six months commitment is required in order to complete the Bronze and Silver awards. If your son/daughter would like to participate in the D of E Award then please complete the attached programme planners and application form.

4 Once you have completed the programme planners containing your son/daughters planned activities, you may complete the registration form and enrolment form. There is an initial feee of 17.00, which is the D of E Participation fee. This will enable your son/daughter to register with the online edofe system and they will also receive a D of E Welcome Pack. There will be a further charge in The New Year, which will be required to cover some costs towards the expeditions. This includes campsite, mini bus and assessor s fees and should be approximately I am available every Wednesday lunchtime and after school on Wednesday s in Room 231 on Green Close if your son/daughter would like any help or advice about the activities they would like to do. Or please do not hesitate to me on if you require any further information. Alternatively, you can access the D of E Website on which provides a wealth of informationn regarding the scheme. In the meantime, I am delighted that your son/daughter is interested in participating in such a worthwhile programme and I look forward to meeting them in the near future. Yours faithfully Lynn Tisbury Lynn Tisbury D of E Coordinator

5 Why do it? This is what The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme had to say. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award is a Charity that has been working with young people from all backgrounds for more than half a century. We want to work with academies and schools across England to give more young people the chance to do their DofE and lead successful and fulfilling lives. The DofE is the nationally and internationally recognised Award favoured by employers and universities alike. Over time, we build confidence, dedication and commitment, attributes we all want to see in our young people in school, life and in the workplace. Building a brighter future for young people. It s a tough time to be a young person in the UK right now. Across the country, many are held back by a lack of confidence or experience, and a poverty of ambition. At the most critical stage of life s journey, young people need some help in making positive decisions. That s where the DofE comes in. Students feel the benefit of achieving their DofE Award for the rest of their lives. It provides a prestigious certificate recognising their achievement and an improved chance of getting into university, college or a job. It gives them the opportunity to create their own individual learning programme and a chance to explore new and unfamiliar environments. They develop personal skills including time management, problem solving and initiative. It also improves their interpersonal skills and gives them friendships for life. Besides that, it s fun! Employers tell us they are looking for young people who have achieved a DofE Award when they recruit. We know the DofE improves employability, which is why many employers put their young talent, including apprentices and graduates through their DofE programme as part of their development. Doing a DofE programme improves behaviour, attitude, social skills and confidence in a young person. Our research with Gold Award holders shows that: 85% believed doing their DofE had improved their confidence. 79% learnt to work as a team leader. 83% felt they learnt to work with different types of people through their programme. 61% of Gold Award holders still volunteer after achieving their Award.
