2 Barnsley British Co-operative society From the opening of the first store in 1862 to the boom years of the 1950s, the Co-op remained at the heart of the community. Explore objects and photographs donated by local people and listen to fond memories of time spent working at, and visiting, the Co-op. There are lots of family activities you can get involved in from baking to walking tours. There s something for the whole family this summer! Children can pick up a divi-loyalty card from the museum, take part in four activities and receive a free gift at the museum shop! Barnsley British Co-operative society the First BranCh, DoDworth

THE BARNSLEY BRITISH CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY Monday 6 July Sunday 27 September MORE THAN JUST A SHOP: STORIES OF THE CO-OPERATIVE MOVEMENT Monday 20 July Step back in time and explore the history of the Barnsley British Co-operative Society in a new exhibition. From the opening of the first Barnsley Co-op store in 1862 it remained at the heart of many Barnsley communities. There was a shop in every village and people relied on their local Co-op for everyday essentials. Listen to fond memories of time spent working and visiting Co-op shops, young visitors can play in our shop too! BAKE BREAD THE CO-OP WAY AT CANNON HALL MUSEUM Wednesday 8 July Learn how to make bread from scratch using recipes produced by the Co-op in the 1950s. Bake your creations in the Victorian range at Cannon Hall Museum. Organic flours produced by Worsbrough Mill will be on sale. > 11am 1pm > Age 16 + > Call to book CO-OPERATIVE VINTAGE FESTIVAL Saturday 18 July Join us at Experience Barnsley and explore vintage stalls in the museum galleries, take part in vintage craft activities and have your hair styled into that perfect 50s pin up. Special live music from retro performers will fill the museum. > 10am 4pm Join Gillian Lonergan from the National Co-operative Archive for this fascinating talk on the Co-operative movement. Also, view the newly conserved Barnsley Co-operative archive collection. > 7pm 9pm > Admission 3 per person > Pre-booking advised, please call > Refreshments will be served > Supported by the Co-operative Heritage Trust MILLING FLOUR THE CO-OP WAY AT WORSBROUGH MILL Sunday 26 July The Barnsley Co-op had its own flour mill, producing flour to send around the country. Drop into our fun session in the classroom and help us to create a model of the mill and fill it with your own milling characters. > Drop in 11am 2.30pm BARNSLEY TOWN CENTRE CO-OP SHOP WALKING TRAIL Wednesday 29 July Saturday 1 August Sunday 13 September Join us on a walking tour of the town centre and find out where the Barnsley Co-op shops used to be. 4 activities and events Supermarket all events taking place at experience Barnsley unless specified LIVING HISTORY WOODY THE TIME TRAVELLING SHOPPER Saturday 1 August Saturday 19 September Help Woody, a time traveller from a distant planet, build a time machine so you can find out about life in the past and go on a shopping adventure. Meet Dotty in the Co-op shop in 1936 and then travel back to the 1840s to meet her grandmother at the first Co-op shop in Rochdale. Living History workshops use performance and interactive drama activities to bring learning to life. Performance by the People s History Museum. An ideal activity for families. > 1pm in the Learning Lab > Booking is advised due to limited numbers DISCOVER LIFE AT THE CO-OP FARM AT WORSBROUGH MILL Sunday 2 August Drop into our fun session in the classroom and help us to create a large picture of the working farm. Make your own animal stamps to add to our picture and then take home to use again. > Drop in 11am 2.30pm INTRODUCTION TO GEOCACHING AT DARFIELD LIBRARY Saturday 8 August Find out more about this treasure hunting activity in an introduction to Geocaching. Suitable for families and adults alike, come along and talk to the team about how and where you can take part. Download a free geocaching app and then head out and explore the Dearne Valley to discover the history of the Barnsley Co-operative stores around Darfield. Starting at Darfield Library and finishing at the Maurice Dobson Museum. > 11am > Booking is advised, please ring > Supported by the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership CREATE AFTERNOON TEA AT CANNON HALL MUSEUM Wednesday 9 September Learn how to make tasty treats that were enjoyed during the afternoons by many in the Barnsley Co-operative Arcadian restaurant. > 11am 1pm > Age 16 + > Call to book HANDS ON CO-OP HISTORY Tuesday 18 August HAVE A GO AT PRINTMAKING Saturday 8 August Create your own design inspired by vintage Co-op shopping adverts, and print a tote bag to take away with you. Work with an artist who can help you achieve that special bag to shop until you drop! > 10am 12pm or 1.30pm 3.30pm > Ages 12 + > Dress for mess, printing ink will stain clothing > Bags provided, limited to 10 people per session, booking is advised Drop into the Discovery Centre at Experience Barnsley where you can handle some original Barnsley Co-operative archives. Look through the early minute books, building plans and photograph albums. > 5pm 6.30pm CARDBOARD CO-OP Saturday 26 September Join artists from Responsible Fishing and help create an interactive Co-op shop entirely out of cardboard, loads and loads of cardboard. This build and play workshop will unleash creativity, ignite imaginations and encourage role play, proving without doubt the old saying that the cardboard box is more fun than the toy! > 10am 4pm
