1 Best Wishes for a wonderful Independence Day holiday to everyone at The Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care! Many folks refer to the upcoming holiday as the July 4th holiday. However, the official name for this mid summer holiday that is typically filled with cook outs, family time, recreational activities and fireworks is Independence Day. Why Independence Day? July 4th marks the day that the original 13 colonies declared their independence from the control and governance of Great Britain. The written document declaring the independence of the 13 original colonies is of course the Declaration of Independence. Look on page 4 of this month s newsletter to test your knowledge about some of the interesting facts about Independence Day related questions. Good luck!

3 The next Family Council sponsored luncheon will be held July 30th. The menu will include Polish Sausage Sandwiches, Nachos and Cheese, Dessert and a drink All for the bargain price of $5.00. Sign up sheets are available throughout the The Lions Center. Join us for lunch on July 30th! The drawing for the Fun in the Sun Beach Basket was held on June 26th. The winner of the basket was Gary Kammauf. Thanks for everyone s support of the efforts of the Family Council fundraising projects. We couldn t do it without you! The next Family Council meeting is scheduled for July 20th at 10 am in the Conference Room. We welcome all family members to join us! The next basket raffle sponsored by the Family Council will feature a Schools Days themed basket. As always, tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Tickets are available from any Family Council member or they can also be purchased in the Social Services office. The drawing will be held August 7th just in time for the kids to return to school!

5 For many of The Lions Center residents, quilting and sewing were common activities that they were engaged in from early in their lives. For many, having a new dress or other item of clothing was dependent on someone in the family knowing how to sew. Sometimes young people learned about sewing from the parents, grandparents or other relatives. In addition, Home Economics classes were a regular part of the school curriculum, especially for young ladies. For a period of years, the number of people who were skilled at sewing decreased significantly. However, lately the level of interest in sewing and quilting has increased. A number of Lions Center residents, with the help and involvement of staff, are undertaking a quilt project. Over the next couple of months a quilt top will be constructed, with the finished quilt being machined quilted. Once finished, the quilt will be raffled off to raise funds to support activities and entertainment for the resident s enjoyment. Watch for the quilt to be displayed at The Lions Center sometime soon.! There s some new neighbors hanging around in The Lions Center neighborhood these days. A doe and her twin fawns have been visiting numerous locations at and around The Lions Center over the past week. Last week, the doe was noticed right outside of the The Lions Center front door, checking out the gold lion statue by the gazebo. This picture was taken of her and her youngsters in the front lawn of a home on Bishop Walsh drive one morning as employees were coming to work. Keep your eyes open and maybe you can catch a glimpse of them. They seem quite comfortable in our neighborhood!
