1 Northampton Museums Education Service Northampton Museums Education Service offers a range of different experiences for pupils both inside and outside the classroom. This leaflet gives details of the facilitated sessions we deliver at both Abington Park Museum and Northampton Museum & Art Gallery. Many of the sessions link to different areas of the National Curriculum, and offer the opportunity to learn a range of skills and techniques. Self-directed gallery visits are also available free of charge. All group visits must be booked in advance. Maximum number of students per session = 60 Minimum charge per session 30 + VAT We also offer a range of resources for teachers to use in the classroom: Northampton Museums Object Loans Boxes. These are themed, have original and replica objects and include a detailed resource pack with guidelines on how to use the box with your class. 2 Abington Park Museum Toys Reception/KS1 - A great introduction to history We have a wide variety of toys for you to choose from including a zoetrope, egg and cup, a 1950s Rupert the Bear and a Javanese rod puppet. We look at materials and how toys have changed through time. Moving Toys (Year 5) The sessions use a range of moving toys most of which can be handled. Pupils will investigate the material choice for the toys and how and why they move. These sessions can also be led by school staff The Victorians A Day in the Life KS1 The story of one special day in a Victorian child s life. Children have the chance to dress up, do household chores and play with Victorian toys Investigating the Victorians Using objects, some actually used by Victorians. Students have the chance to investigate health, hygiene, education and everyday life. Victorian Schoolroom 1.50 per student Experience the strict regime of Victorian schooling. Children will take part in an exercise drill, use slate pencils and slates and work towards achieving the school medal. Links to QCA Scheme of work: History Unit 11. What was it like for children living in Victorian Britain?

3 Britain since the 1930s 1940s Washday Our handling collection includes: Granny s bloomers; washtub; scrubbing board; Lifebuoy soap; dolly tub and posser; dolly, washing line pegs; a flat iron, a mangle and a clothes horse. Links to National Curriculum: History Britain since This session may also be led by school staff. Second World War Evacuee Using authentic objects we find out what it was like to be an evacuee, then write a letter home to parents blitzed in London. Britons at war the Home Front Find out the experiences of the people of Northampton or a soldier from the Northamptonshire Regiment during WWII. This session is set in the early 1940s and includes the chance to handle some original artefacts. Links to National Curriculum History Britain since 1930 Impact of the Second World War. How we used to live Homes in the Past Using a variety of household objects, this session investigates home of days gone by. Discover how to clean rugs, do the washing and make butter plus much more! Ancient Egypt Opening of the Mouth Ceremony 1.50 per student (single session) A replica mummy and Anubis mask are amongst the objects used for this funeral rite. Pupils re-enact the ceremony that will bring the dead person everlasting life. Hieroglyphics Workshop 1.50 per student (single session) Students try writing in pictures and symbols on real papyrus! This session is teacher-led and combined with the opening of the mouth ceremony. 2 per student (both sessions together) Links to National Curriculum History: A world study Ancient Egypt

4 Art & Design Looking at Portraits KS 1, 2 or 3 This session enables students to discuss and question portraits on display at the museum. Through looking at the composition of a painting, they will be able to record and analyse their findings in a variety of ways, learning how to use a portrait as a piece of historical evidence. Costume Costume through the ages Compare today s clothes with those worn in the past. Investigate how clothes are made, and try on our range of replica costumes. Explore the costumes on display in the gallery.

5 Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Local History Archaeological Dig How do we find out about the past? Become an archaeologist and fill in the time line using artefacts from Northampton s past. Links to National Curriculum: History Key Stage 2: A local history study. Hunsbury Hillfort KS3/4 Visit the museum for a talk from a specialist about the latest interpretation of its function. Pupils can also look at the displays and assess model reconstructions and the significance of finds from the site. Art & Design Sculpture KS1, 2 & 3 2 per student Using sculpture from the handling collection, students are encouraged to focus on materials, design, practical application, they will gain valuable insight into the work of the sculptor, choice of material, form and materials and design. Students also get the opportunity to make a sculpture. Links to National Curriculum: Art and Design. Unit 1c What is Sculpture? KS 3: Art and design Unit 7B: What's in a building? Tile Painting KS 2 & 3 2 per student. Study art nouveau and art deco styles then decorate a tile. Contact the museum for further information. Team this session with a visit to 78 Derngate. Links to National Curriculum: Art and Design Unit 3B Investigating Pattern Legacy of the Ancient Greeks Using our special handling collection and museum gallery ideas, discover the myths, legends, gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece. 6 Invaders & Settlers Life in Roman Britain A variety of objects including: coins, pottery, mosaics oil lamps and replica roman armour, bring Roman Britain alive. Anglo Saxon and Viking Life Pupils are invited to explore the life of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings by looking at real and replica items. They will learn about daily life, trade, entertainment and clothing with the opportunity to try on costume and write their name in runes. History/Design & Technology History of shoes Find out more about shoes by looking at footwear through the ages using the museum s extensive shoe handling collection. This visit can be combined with a look at both the Life and Sole and Followers of Fashion shoe galleries. This session can also include shoe making. Local schools may wish to have this session as part of a study of local history. Made to Last shoe making per student The workshop allows pupils to explore the characteristic features of Victorian times and find out what impact changes in work had on the lives of real people. In role as shoemakers' children in 1857, the pupils will actively help a Northampton shoemaker discover whether the new machines would put them out of jobs. Britain Industrial Change The Boot and Shoe Trade KS3 Students use worksheets to look at the museum displays to find out more about the industrialisation of this local industry. Museum staff can offer an introductory session on the history of the Boot and Shoe trade and the process of making shoes by hand. Links to National Curriculum: History.
