10 Technical Recommendations for 3M Air-Powered Tools Use a clean, lubricated air supply that will give a measured air pressure at the tool of 6.2 bar (90 psig) when the tool is running with the lever fully depressed. Use an approved 10mm (3/8 in.) x 8m (25 ft.) maximum length airline. Connect the tool to the air supply as shown in Figure 1. It is strongly recommended that an air filter, regulator and lubricator (FRL) be used as shown in Figure 1, to supply clean, lubricated air at the correct pressure to the tool. If such equipment is not used, the tool should be manually lubricated. Recommended Airline Size: 10mm Minimum: 3/8 inch Recommended Maximum Hose Length: 8m 25 feet Air Pressure Maximum Working Pressure: 6.2 bar 90 psig To manually lubricate the tool: Disconnect the airline and put 2 3 drops of suitable pneumatic motor lubricating oil, such as 3M Air Tool Lubricant 20451, into the hose end (inlet) of the tool. Reconnect tool to the air supply and run tool for a few seconds to allow air to circulate the oil. Lubricate daily if the tool is used frequently or if the tool starts to slow or lose power. NOTE: Tools can be run at lower pressures, but should never be run higher than 6.2 bar (90 psig). If run at lower pressure the performance of the tool is reduced. Basic Random Orbital Sanding Techniques Start the tool ON and stop the tool OFF the work surface to avoid swirl marks. Run the tool flat to work piece (no tipping on edge). Light operator hand pressure on the tool handle. North, South, East, West common sanding pattern for uniform finish quality see diagram at right for indication. END START 10
