2 The Star-Spangled Banner 0 say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch' d, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our fl ag was still there. 0 say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Hail to Old I.U. Chorus Come and join in song together, Gloriana, Frangipana, Shout with might and main ; E're to her be true ; Our beloved Alma Mater, She's the pride of Indiana, Sound her praise again. H ail to old I.U.! - Joe T. Giles, '94 Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should a uld acquaintance be forgot, And days of Auld Lang Syne? 4 Commencement Ceremonies The audience is requested to remain until the conclusion of the ceremonies. The exercises of the tenth annual Commencement are enacted today at Indiana University at. The counterpart of the pageantry enacted each year on campuses over the world, it is the solemn climax and recognition of the graduat~' years of study and preparation for responsibility. To help spectato'rs understand the significance of the ceremony, the following description is furnished. PROCESSION Leading the procession is the Grand Marshal bearing the ceremonial Mace emblematic of the authority of the state and University. He is attired in ~ white brocade gown with panels trimmed in red velvet and a gold I.U. seal He wears a white brocade cap with gold metallic tassel and a gold satin shoulder sash with gold tassels. The Head Marshals wear black gowns with cream chevrons and panels edged in black and black caps with gold tassels. Other marshals wear satin shoulde r sashes of various colors and designs. Led by the marshals, candidates march behind the identification banners of the respective divisions which recommended them for their degrees. They are: Division of Arts and Sciences Division of Business Division of Dental Hygiene Division of Education Division of Music Division of Allied Health Sciences Division of General and Technical Studies School of Public and Environmental Affairs As the candidates reach their seats, the members of the faculties of Indiana University at march in, wearing the colorful hoods of the colleges and universities from which they were graduated. The climax of the processional is the platform party which includes a Trustee of the University, Deans and other personnel of the University, and finally the President of the University. As his badge of office, the President wears a jewel emblematic of the history of the state and of the University. A Trustee of the University can be identified by his red gown which has red velvet panels and cream velvet chevrons on the sleeves and a cream seal of the University. He wears a black cap with a gold metallic tassel. ACADEMIC ATTIRE All candidates for degrees and those who hold these degrees, including University officials and faculty and visiting dignitaries, are attired in traditional cap and gown. The basic color for most caps and gowns is formal black, except for associate degree candidates, who wear gray caps and gowns. However, recipients of different degrees wear distinctive tassels on their caps (called mortarboards) and hoods of various hues draped down the backs of their gowns. CAPS Candidates for the bachelor's, master's, and associate's degrees wear the regulation caps with the tassels appropriate to the division from which they are being graduated. The authorized tassels are: Arts and Sciences-White Business-Drab Dental Hygiene-Lilac Education-Light Blue Music-Pink Allied Health-Kelly Green General and Technical Studies-Red and White Public and Environmental Affairs-Peacock Blue -2-

5 GOWNS The bachelor's and associate's gowns have a closed front and long, pointed, open sleeves. The master's gown has an open front with extremely long, closed sleeves, from which the arms protrude through a slit at the elbow; the end of the sleeve is square, with an arc of a circle just above the bottom. The doctor's gown is an open-front garment with voluminous bell-shaped sleeves on which appear three velvet bars (usually black, but sometimes blue for philosophy or green for medicine or optometry). HOODS The bachelor's hood is rather short with a narrow velvet edging in the color matching the tassels and a lining in the color or colors of the institution -crimson at Indiana. The bachdor's hood is not worn by candidates for this degree, except by those upon whom the baccalaureate degree has previously been conferred. The master's hood is considerably longer, has a wider velvet edging, and exposes more of the lining. The doctor's hood is easily recognized by the width of the velvet edging, the wide panels at either side, the greater length, and the full exposure of the lining. The colors of the edging most frequently seen are blue for philosophy, green for medicine, and purple for laws; the colors for the honorary doctor's degrees are purple for laws, white for letters, and golden yellow for science. HONORS Students who have been tentatively accepted as honor degree candidates are entitled to wear the fourragere, cream and crimson cords worn from the left shoulder, during the Commencement Ceremony. Those with cream and crimson cords indicate highest distinction, those with cream cords only indicate high distinction, and those with all crimson cords indicate distinction. Honors are awarded by a vote of the various faculties, and the fourrageres are provided by the University. The appropriate recognition is recorded on the individual's diploma as a permanent testimonial of his achievement. SYMBOLS Traditional in all formal ceremonies of Indiana University are the Mace, symbol of authority; the Jewel of Office, emblematic of the Office of the President; and the Collar of the Jewel of Office. The first is carried in the academic procession by the Grand Marshal, and the last two are worn by the President. In design and ornamentation they represent significant events in the history of the state of Indiana and of the University. These treasured symbols were presented to the University by its chapters of the Miami Triad in celebrating their centennials. The Jewel of Office was presented by Beta Theta Pi in 1945; the Mace by Phi Delta Theta in 1949; and the Collar of the Jewel of Office by Sigma Chi in Marshals Wilfred C. 6 Honorary Degree Recipient Franklin Dunn Schurz, Sr. DoCTOR OF LAws Franklin D. Sch~rz has spent most of his life in Indiana, furthering the communications industry. A native of, he was graduated from High School and went on to receive his A.B. degree and M.B.A. degree from Harvard University. When Schurz joined the Tribune Company in 1925, the Trib\.!ne had a circulation of 21,000 and owned a small radio station. Today, the Tribune's circulation is 120,000 and the company owns seven other newspapers, a television station, and two radio stations. Schurz, now chairman of the board, engineered this growth by taking advantage of technological innovations and by adapting modern audience research to improving the content and performance of his newspapers. Schurz firmly believes in community involvement. He was early to recognize the responsibility of newspapers to work with journalism schools in encouraging young people in newspaper careers. He has been involved in improving the economic climate of northern Indiana, has served on the United Fund of St. Joseph County, and was chairman of an emergency civic committee to find jobs for displaced Studebaker employees. He was instrumental in acquiring the property which is now the campus of I.U.. Other activities of Schurz include the Advisory Council on Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame; the board of trustees, University of Notre Dame; the board of trustees, Saint Mary's College; and the executive council of the Harvard Business School Association. Schurz is a member of both the Indiana Academy and the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. He has received an honorary LL.D. from Saint Mary's College and from the University of Notre Dame. Newspaper organizations Schurz is affiliated with include the Associated Press board of trustees; the American Newspaper Publishers Association board of trustees; the ANPA research institute; the ANPA bureau of advertising board; and the Hoosier State Press Association board. He was president of the Inland Daily Press Association in In 1959, Schurz received the University of Minnesota award for distinguished service to journalism

45 Indiana University at In 1922, Indiana University scheduled its first classes in the area, primarily to help local teachers meet licensing requirements. During the depression of the 1930's Indiana University recognized the need to provide a broader range of higher education opportunities in home communities; as a result, the - Extension Center was established in 1922 to offer a basic two-year program. Administrative offices were located in Central High School, and classes were offered during late afternoon and evening hours in the school and in the downtown YWCA. After a decline in attendance during the war years, returning veterans contributed to a post war enrollment rise which launched the Center into a major period of growth. In the late 1950's, a site adjacent to the St. Joseph River in was acquired for a new campus with the help of South Bend officials, organizations, and individuals. In 1961, the move was made into the first new facility, Northside Hall. A second building was acquired in 1966, and a third structure was completed in A major addition to Northside Hall opened in Fifteen months ago, Indiana University purchased from Associates Corps, of North America land and property that will almost double the size of the campus.!usb expects to begin moving into these holdings in During the 1960's the Center experienced a major period of development, emerging as a comprehensive, degree-granting institution. In 1963, it became a regional campus, and soon afterward the first four-year degree programs were authorized. In 1967, the first seniors to graduate from the campus received their degrees. The following year, the campus became Indiana University at, a title indicating another new level in its academic development a nd status within the Indiana University system.
