Set up Sampling Grid Soil Sampling with FieldRecon To open the window to define the map grid, click on Grid, which is found above the center of the map. * Use the Preview button on the top-right to see the Grid on the map with the current grid settings. It is often useful to view this window next to the maps so that the preview can be immediately visible. 1. First, define the units for the length and area of the grids in the drop-down menus on the top-right of the window. 2. Define the size of the grid: a. Select whether the size of a grid is defined by the Cell Area, or the Cell Length and Width. Click next to the appropriate selection. b. If Cell Area is selected: i. Type in a cell area on the right. Figure 1- Window to define the Map Grid for soil sampling. ii. Select a ratio for the rectangle, defined as (horizontal length)/(vertical length). For example, entering 2 indicates that horizontal length is twice as long as the vertical length. c. If Cell Length and Width is selected: i. Type a horizontal width, then a vertical width based on the units selected from Step Select the Grid Shift by typing numbers into the text boxes. This is useful in cases where the grid and the associated points not fitting optimally within a field border. a. Typing a positive number in the horizontal shift text box moves the grid to the east, and a negative number shifts it to the west. b. Typing a positive number in the vertical shift text box moves the grid to the north, and a negative number shifts it to the south. 4. Select the Grid Rotation by using the arrows to the right of the text field or typing a number for the degrees into the text box. 2

5. Select the method by which sampling points should be added to the map by clicking on the check-boxes on the lower-left. Sampling points can be added manually later as well. 6. Set the Sample ID settings in the lower-right corner of the window. a. Type the naming convention to use by typing the name of the first SampleID. This must end with a number, so that each subsequent SampleID will be incrementally numbered. b. Select the starting corner for the samples, and then select the direction. The starting corner and direction should correspond to the order in which the samples will be taken. Figure 2- Example soil sampling grid showing sampling points in the center of the grid square. Figure 3- Example of soil sampling grid showing sampling points at the corners of the grid. This also features a larger cell area as compared to the prior example, and a 200 foot horizontal shift to the east. Figure 4- Example of soil sampling grid showing sample points at random points in each cell. The program generates a location within each grid for the sample to be taken. These can then be edited as necessary. Figure 5- Example naming convention. The example to the left had adjusted the settings in the Sample ID section to ready BACKFORTY 1 for the Starting ID. The Back 40 is the name of the field. Then the starting corner was changed Northeast, which is closer to the field entrance. 3

New AB Line for Grid This tool allows the user to set the line that grid should be parallel to. Open the tool from the left menubar. Click on the map and a blue dot will be shown for the first point. Then click a second time to create the imaginary line. The grid will be moved so that the cross-lines are parallel to the line just drawn. Add Sampling Points Click on the (+) in the left toolbar. Then click on a point within the field border to add a new sampling point. o This will add a sampling point that will be numbered immediately after the prior selected point. If no point is selected, it will be added below the last SampleID. Click on the Add GPS Point tool above the map to add a sampling point at the current GPS location. (only applicable if a GPS is connected to the laptop) Move Existing Points There are three tools available to move an existing point: Drag Point Tool o This is opened in the left toolbar. o Simply click on a point, and then drag the mouse to a new location on the map. Figure 6- Window to adjust the Latitude and Longitude of a sampling point as decimal degrees. Move Point to GPS Location o With a sampling point selected, clicking on the GPS Loc button above the map will move a selected point to the current GPS Location. (only applicable if a GPS is connected to the laptop) Figure 7- Window to adjust the Latitude and Longitude of a sampling point as Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds. 4

Edit Latitude and Longitude Options o This can either be done using the standard decimal degrees, or by the Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds scale. Access these tools by clicking on the Tools menu. Click on Edit Lat/Lon of Selected Samples (DD) to adjust the coordinates using the standard decimal degree scale. Click on Edit Lat/Lon of Selected Samples (DMS) to adjust the coordinates using the Degrees, Minutes, Seconds scale. o With either selection, Delete Lat/Lon allows the user to clear the coordinates of a point. Display options for the sample points are set in after clicking on Options above the map. Select the Sample Point Label properties on the left side of the window. o Select whether labels should be shown or not using the check-box. o Select the label background from the drop-down menu. o Click on the to select the font size and related properties. o Click on the to select the Label Text Color, and the Label Background Color. A color palate is opened. o Label Overlap properties are selected in the drop-down menu. When Prevent labels from overlap is selected, the labels will be hidden rather than overlapping as the zoom level changes. Select the Label Displayed by clicking on the button the left of the option. o The Sample ID shows the full name for each sample. o The Order Number shows the order for the sample to be taken. Insert Non-Georeferenced Sampling Point Figure 8- Sample Point Options. A non-georeferenced soil sampling point can be added to the list to specify a composite sample that does not correspond to a specific location in the field. Click on the Tools menu, and then click Add Non-Georeferenced Soil Sample. This will be added after the currently selected sample in the list. 5

Record Samples As the user moves through the field and takes soil samples, it is quick and easy to record a sample as completed in the program. A sample recorded as completed will be shown as a blue X, unless another setting is specified in the Options window. 1. Select a sample by: a. Clicking on a point. b. Selecting a line in the left table that shows a value in the Lab Sample ID column. c. Navigate to the next point in the series by clicking on the Next button on the top-left. 2. When a selected sample is collected, click the check-box in the Done column to the far left, or click on the Done button in the toolbar above the map. Soil Sampling Template Figure 9- Map View showing sample points as they are being completed. When saving or applying a Soil Sampling template, the user will need to select whether the template is a GeoReferenced or Non-Georeferenced Template. A non-georeferenced Template is used to initialize the grid settings and forms for any field. This type of template uses the following information: o Basic Grid Parameters, including Cell Size, starting SampleID, and other information that s not specific to a grid s location. o Information Table, including sampling depth, soil moisture, and similar information. Figure 10- Window to select Non-GeoReferenced or GeoReferenced templates. GeoReferenced Templates are specific to fields, and are used to initialize the soil sam pling grid and points for the current field. These are useful to ensure sampling in the same location from year to year. This will save the following information: o GeoReferenced Sample Points All Grid Parameters, including Location, Rotation, Cell Size, starting SampleID, and other information. Information Table, including sampling depth, soil moisture, and similar information. 6

Export to SHP File Sample points and Field Borders can be exported as shapefiles. These can then be passed to VRT prescription generation programs or other agriculture GIS programs. 1. Click on Tools, within the Sampling toolbar, and then select Export Sample Points and Data to SHP File. This opens a window where the options are specified. Figure 11- Window to export soil sampling points. 2. Select the Output Folder, which is where the shapefile will be stored. Click on the Browse button to navigate to a new location on the hard drive. 3. Type a File Name Qualifier, which will appear at the front of the name given to the exported shapefile. The format of the name of the output file is: <FileNameQualifier>_<FieldName>_<Date>_SamplePts.shp. 4. Select the Layers to include by clicking on the check-box to the left of the layer names. Multiple selections can be made here. 5. Select the Coordinate System to use for the exported items by clicking next to either Longitude/Latitude (decimal degrees), or Easting/Northing. 6. Click Export when finished. Update Tools Actions can be specified in the window that opens, then implemented for specific sampling points on the map. This is opened by clicking on the 'Tools' icon in the left toolbar. The options that can be edited are listed as follow: o A New Sample ID for the first point can be entered for the first point. This should end with a number so that each subsequent point will be automatically incremented. o The Marker Symbol can be changed by clicking to the left of the appropriate option. o The Sample Position can be moved to the current GPS location by clicking on the check-box to the left of the Move to GPS location. 1. After making the appropriate specifications for editing the sample points, click OK to close this window. 7
