Welcome to Mellor Community At Mellor we value our parents and provide Life Long Learning opportunities. Language barriers are overcome by providing group activities whereby learners feel that they are valued, understood and treated as equals. Where possible language support is provided and this in turn builds their selfesteem and confidence. Please also refer to our Volunteer Policy on the Mellor Web. Here are some examples of Family Learning and Adult course. Keeping Healthy Mellor and Woodbridge Sure Start Children s Centre invited parents/carers to attend healthy workshops with their children. This was an opportunity to see the new centre and get involved in activities such as, dental care, hand washing and making a healthy packed lunch. The aim of the event was to work in partnership to help the children to stay healthy. Feedback from class teachers, children, parents/carers The workshops were really good. The children were interested in all the activities. The fact that they rotated between the activities in their little groups kept them occupied and interested throughout the whole hour. It was BRILLIANT!!!! It was FANTASTIC!!! I liked the food tasting workshops. I learnt how to keep my hands clean. Children enjoyed the healthy packed lunch and washing hands workshops. Variety of different ways of showing aspects of healthy living, tailored very nicely to the age of the children, lots of very visual elements, enjoyable and useful both for children and parents. Very good, they all enjoyed it. Children enjoyed the activities. There was enough time for each activity. The parents who came along liked the new centre and found the workshops very useful.

There should have been more staff to run the workshops. We found that when we had to swap around we had to wait for about five minutes for the next workshop to be prepared. Children enjoyed making healthy sandwiches (and tasting them!) and they were encouraged to try things they hadn t had before. More children would have liked the opportunity to see their dirty hands under the UV light. (I felt they should all have washed their hands first so this could have been done more efficiently). They could tell me what they had learnt about teeth and some information about the healthy eating. The parents appreciated the recipes for fruit drinks and hummus etc. and said they would try them out at home. The workshops were very good and the children had fun. The children were reluctant at first with the food tasting but soon they were enjoying the different tastes. The parents also enjoyed the workshops and said that they will try different sandwich fillers. Children enjoyed the activities, particularly the healthy food activity. I thought the washing hands activity was really useful and interesting for the children.

Picture Diaries A Picture Diary is a book of special memories to me and my family. I am doing this with my son, so that we can spend quality time together and enjoy the task of creating something special that we will treasure as a family. There needs to be a sequence of events and memories in logical order. A Picture Diary is a way of showing others what has influenced you in your life. A Picture Diary is a story with pictures and words showing something that is important to the person that has made it. A Picture Diary is a book that shows images and memories in date order. *To gain more knowledge and to be able to use the computer. *To understand different ways of presenting information. *To learn basic skills on the computer. *To attend every session, as I find it hard to motivate myself sometimes. *To make sure that I involve my son on this project and to spend quality time with him. *To make the picture dairy fun for my children. *To make sure I attend each session each week.

*To be able to make picture slide shows. *To be able to use the internet to access information. *To learn the layout of the school computers. *To complete the picture dairy and achieve accreditation. *To support each other to complete the tasks. *To develop computer skills. *To share ideas. *My chosen topic is about my dad and how much he did for me and what his life was about. *I have chosen this topic because I loved my dad so much and to keep his memories alive so I can tell my kids how much my dad really meant to me. He was the best dad in world. *My family (children s memories). It brings out a lot of memories, when they first come into this world as babies and they go through different stages of development i.e. - Learning to roll over before they sit up to learn to walk and talk. Their first birthday, Christmas and how they are today.

*My honeymoon. I want to remember my marriage and honeymoon because after one month I missed my hubby. He flew to London without me. *When my daughters were born, through to when they started school. I chose this topic because I want to document this time in their life as they may not remember what feelings and excitement they had when they were little. *Finding out about my children s grandparents and great grandparents. If possible I might even go further on to find information about my great, great grandparents. Whilst talking to my son who is nine years old. I felt that he hardly knows anything about my father who died 15 years ago. I thought that it would be nice for me and my whole family to look back on families. *My topic is about me and my family. I thought that my children are growing here in England. I don t have any relatives in this country. They need to know about my culture and relatives in my country (Srilanka) and the way I grew up from a child to an adult. *I started to learn how to use the internet and found the exercise very useful. *I learnt how to use the computer and was actually able to print my work off at the end of the task. *I learnt how to use the Microsoft word, how to add text, picture and also how to change the font and colour. *I learnt how to open web pages.

*I learnt how to copy and paste and did some work using the insert How will you involve your child in the picture diary this week? *We will try and finish the front cover. We need to start asking grandparents for information and gather it all together. *I will ask my son to help me think of a title and design the front cover with me. *We will cut and stick the pictures, using clipart. *We will open web pages and find pictures. what do you need to remember for next week? *How to use the internet. *Start gathering information and photographs. *I must remember to take all my work with me. *I need to remember how to switch on the computer and log in. *I must remember to plan how to set my picture diary. *I took some fireworks photographs and our Eid festival photographs. * I took photographs of Halloween/Bonfire night. *I took photographs of children celebrating Diwali with the extended family.

Group ideas for how to involve the children in making the picture diary. Sharing memories Looking through photographs Choosing photographs Taking photographs Talking about family relationships and places Drawing pictures Writing Cutting Sticking Trips out to collect resources Using the computer *Putting the diaries together. *Using the computer. *Adding photos and getting my children involved.

*I enjoyed looking through all the photos Picture Diaries Learner s Evaluation What do you feel you have learnt from the course? *I have learnt how to use the computer, word process and print. Used different font styles and colour and I have also taken pride in the presentation of my work. *I have learnt new computer skills and the importance of working in a group. *I made new friends and shared ideas and enjoyed the course. *I have achieved new skills and it has made great difference when I work with my children at home. *I am very happy to have had this opportunity. It has brought back many happy memories that I can share with my family and I have enjoyed the course. It was a very nice course. It has made me think about the past and given me the opportunity to put my memories together. What did you enjoy most about the course? *Putting the picture diary together with my son and actually talking about the past and thinking about our family. *I have enjoyed every bit of the course. *It was fun to put the picture diary together and meet so many new people from different parts of the world.

*I have enjoyed the friendships that I have made. *I have enjoyed learning new skills. *Finding pictures, typing, using the internet and working with my family to put the diary together. *Involving my family at each stage to create the picture diary. What would you change about the course? *Nothing. Have you achieved you own aims for the course? *Yes, I couldn t believe that I have created a picture diary. *Yes, I never thought that I would be on task and could make this picture diary. *Yes, I am a lot more confident on the computer and I have made new friends. *Yes, it has given me more confidence to take up new opportunities that come my way. I reached all of my aims. * I believe that I have achieved everything that I had set out to do. What courses would you like to do next? *Playing with language. *Beauty course. *I would like to do a computer course. *More picture diary courses (get all my pictures in diaries).

*I would like to learn more about computers and how to use the other packages.
