They know that they have the power to make choices that will affect the situation and this knowledge supports their ability to cope with situations outside of their control. May Website: Phone: (+974 ) Fax: (+974) Preparations for the New School Year As we enter the last part of this school year we have begun to make preparations for class placements for the new school year. As much as possible we will try to keep your children in their class together so friendship groups will be kept in place. We will balance the number of boys and girls in each class and we will try to place even numbers of new children coming in so that they have opportunities to learn the ropes from those children who have been in the school for some time. As is always the case, next year there will be some movement amongst the teachers. At Qatar Academy: Ms. Salma Mroueh will move to the Club House as an English speaking teacher Ms. Tamadr will move to the Club House as an instructional assistant Ms. Melanie will be moving up to the kindergarten Ms. Yara will take on the role of the English speaking teacher in the Toddler 2 class Ms. Nancy will move to the Club House as an Arabic speaking teacher Ms. Joceline will be in Junior 1 as the Arabic speaking teacher Ms. Pilar will move into the Toddler 2 class as the instructional teacher and Ms. Kevina will be moving down to infant 1 as the instructional assistant. At HBKU: Ms. Da ad will move to Junior 1 as Arabic speaking teacher Ms. Mary will move to Junior 2 as Arabic speaking teacher Ms. Nibal will move to Toddlers as Arabic speaking teacher Ms. Magdoleen will move to Junior 1 as instructional assistant Ms. Ibtisam will move to Junior 2 as instructional assistant Ms. Nancy Suva will move to Toddlers as instructional assistant Qatar Academy Mission Statement It is the mission of Qatar Academy (QA) to provide internationally accepted, comprehensive, English medium programs plus Arabic and Islamic studies form preschool through secondary graduation. QA develops independent, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and empowers students to gain entrance to elite universities and colleges. 1
2 Ms. Lara will move to Infants as instructional assistant Ms. Jenielle will move into the floating teacher position Further to this I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Reem Salem as the EEC Arabic and Islamic Coordinator and that sadly Mrs. Lisa Sapp will be leaving Qatar Academy to take up a position in an international school. We are very sorry to see Lisa go. We thank her for her work in getting the Club House ready and for her support to teachers in the EEC. We wish her all the very best for her new adventure. Taking Lisa s place is Mrs. Jo Ellis who has been working as an academic coordinator in the pre-school. As a number of spaces have opened up we are pleased to announce that the appointments of new staff to fill the vacancies for Qatar Academy and the Club House are complete. All new staff will commence in late August While we realize that parents may have a preference for a particular teaching team, it is not always possible to meet this request. We do wish to assure you that all of our teachers are highly trained professionals, with a dedication to teaching the very young. Each teacher brings with them a diverse range of skills and a uniqueness to their craft. Regardless of which class your child is placed in they will benefit from the support, care and nurturing that is the trademark of the EEC teaching team. We will be pleased to advise you of your child s new class in the coming weeks. 2

4 Toys at School We know that children get very excited about their toys and sometimes they want to bring them to school. However, this habit can cause some distress and unhappiness if the toy is lost or broken. It can also cause conflict amongst children at this age while they are learning the skills of sharing and possession. Further to this, Social Affairs have visited with us, and for safety reasons have asked us to remove all soft toys from the center. We therefore strongly discourage any toys made of fabric. In particular do not allow your child to bring to school teddy bears, stuffed animals, fabric dolls, fabric toys and the like. If you see your child with a toy in their hand when coming to school please encourage them to keep it safely at home where they will find it when they return. Rest assured the school has plenty of resources for the children to engage with. Parent Information Session Ms. Ailsa and Ms. Josephine the school nurses would like to once again offer an information session for parents. All mums and dads are invited to join these sessions on Thursday May 22nd starting at 10:45 a.m. The Nurses will offer a general overview on child health and safety. In particular in this session they will cover the topic of fever. Often children have a fever that seems unexplained. The nurses will speak about what to look for and what may be happening for your child. They will give some hints as to what you can do at home should this occur. Head Lice seems to be a hot topic at the moment and Ailsa and Josephine will also take time to talk about this topic too. We welcome parents into school at all times and we are looking forward to seeing you in school for this very informative session. 4
5 Image of Child - Why it s Important Often children are perceived as delicate and needing protection from all manner of things in the environment. However, if we think of children as being competent and knowledgeable we teach them appropriate ways of handling items without causing them any harm. We respect their competency. The image that we as educators have of a child helps us to provide learning opportunities that will engage and challenge children. We believe, for example, that children are curious, so we provide activities where they can investigate and explore. We believe that children are resilient, so again we create activities that give children opportunities to make decisions, problem solve, reflect and theorise. We know that children are passionate about their play and that through play they explore their world and develop understandings of how things work. They are social. They share ideas, exchange reasons and learn from each other. In the EEC children are given the chance to do all of these things. They do take risks to try new experiences; they learn through trial and error and they know that even a mistake is not a mistake, it is just a reason to evaluate and make changes. Through positive interactions with their environment the children in the EEC play alongside each other. They are supported with challenging activities and encouraged to try new experiences. Therefore the learning encounters are meaningful but at the same time safe, enjoyable and engaging. Kind regards Karen Nicholls Principal EEC 5
