Korean War Veteran Internet Journal for the World s Veterans of the Korean War August 9, 2015 Veterans hold solemn Armistice Day Ceremony in Canada s Capital The July 27 National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in Ottawa was a small, but solemn affair, with 15 Korean War Veterans participating, along with officials from the Korean Embassy and the president of the Canada Korea Society. Veteran colour party advances to Monument to Canadian Fallen, led by Sergeant at Army Bill Berry. Following Berry is Peter Wilkins, Dave Petry with Korean Flag,
Doug Barber, and Phil Lepage carrying the KVA Canada National Capital Unit Standard. The reason for the small size of the group was that many veterans were participating that same day in ceremonies at the Korea War Veterans National Memorial Wall in the Toronto suburb of Brampton. Also, the Canadian Embassy had held its June 25 Korea Day ceremonies and luncheon in Ottawa a few weeks earlier, with many veterans traveling there to participate in that annual event. The number of celebrants did not detract from the solemnity of the ceremony. It was held, as is traditional, at the Monument to Korean War Fallen, which has come to be known as the Korean War Memorial in the local vernacular. The Monument is a slightly larger copy of the one that stands in the Canadian Graves section at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan. It was modeled, cast and assembled by Yu Young Mun, the same artist who crafted the original monument. The Canadian version was cast a few months after the dedication of the original monument, which took place on November 11, 2002.
Natalie Her, assistant to the Republic of Korea s Defence Attache, Colonel Choi Jan Ming, reads the Act of Remembrance, standing to the side of the Monument to Canadian Fallen. The Monument is one of two crafted and cast in Korea by artist Yu Young Mun. Mr. Yu also hand cut the huge granite plinth. He assembled the Monument in Windsor, Ontario in October, 2002, then supervised its placement on the plinth in Ottawa in October, The Canadian version was dedicated and Consecrated in Ottawa in October, 2013, with then Prime Minister of Canada, Right Honourable Jean Chretien officiating throughout the entire two-hour ceremony. Approximately 1,000 Canadian Korean War Veterans from across Canada participated, and marched in column in the army, navy and air force units they had served with in Korea. This year Natalie Her, assistant to the ROK Korean Defence Attache read the Act of Remembrance in Korean. As is custom, participants affixed poppies to the bronze base of the Monument, with each participant giving silent prayer or thought that no
doubt focused on somebody or some who had been lost in Korea so long ago. Four of the Fallen Soldiers named on the panel above are shown in photographs below. Veterans Affairs Canada seeks to locate photographs of all Canadians who fell in the Korean War and all Wars.
CHIASON OMER Royal 22e Regiment VIATEUR CHOUNARD Royal 22e Regiment JAMES CHRISTOFF The Royal Canadian Regiment MICHAEL CHIASSON The Royal Canadian Regiment The ceremony was officiated by Lieutenant Commander (Ret d) Bill Black, president of the National Capital Unit of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada.
Young Hae Lee, the president of the Canada Korea Society was there, representing the international association as well as Canada s many Korean ethnic communities. KVA Canada National Capital Unit President Lieutenant Commander (Ret d) Bill Black reads eulogy for those who served and those who fell in the Korean War. He was supposed to have traveled to Korea as caregiver for veteran Edward Mastronardi who was invested with Korea s highest decoration for valour, the Taeguk Medal of the Order of Military Merit. Mr. Mastronardi, 90, had to remain in Ottawa for health reasons. He will receive the decoration later at his residence, the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Care Centre in Ottawa, where 40 Korean War Veterans are long-term care patients. The Veterans in Ottawa faithfully conduct services at the Monument to Canadian Fallen throughout the year. This includes the national celebration of the Turn Toward Busan Service, which takes place on November 10 at 9 p.m.
At the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan a Korean national service also takes place simultaneously, although in Korea it is then 11 a.m. on November 11. Young Hae Lee, well-known and influential president of the Canada Korea Society, places wreath during the solemn service. Beside her is a minister from the Korean Embassy.
Minister from the Korean Embassy places wreath at plinth of the Monument. This year Minister Sungchoon Park of Korea s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs has instructed his international team to hold a large Turn Toward Busan service once again. Many veterans from allied nations are being invited to participate. The Monument to Canadian Fallen that is located in Ottawa is sited in its own park on an escarpment overlooking Confederation Park, and is located directly across the street from Canada s National Arts Centre. The figures on the Monument face along a plot line that follows the great circle route to the matching Monument that stands in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery.
Sergeant at Arms Major (Ret d) Bill Berry places poppy in memory of the many comrades he lost in Korea. Major Berry served in Korea as a rifleman with the 2 nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia s Canadian Light Infantry, and fought in the Battle of Kapyong in April, He later was commissioned, retiring with the rank of major. Above his campaign ribbons he wears the decoration of the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation, awarded his battalion for its defensive stand in the Battle of Kapyong.
Lieutenant Colonel (Ret d) Claude Charland, places wreath for his Regiment and for KVA Canada, escorted by veteran Maurice Lavoi. Both of them served in Korea with the Royal 22e Regiment.
Major (Ret d) Walter Conrad salutes after placement of poppies. Walter served in Korea as an officer with a squadron of the armoured unit, Lord Strathcona s Horse (Royal Canadians).
Kristin Doyle, executive assistant to Senator Yonah Martin, deputy government leader of the Canadian Senate, and her husband place poppies on the Monument. Kristin is currently on maternity leave and holds her baby daughter. Senator Martin authored the private bill that moved swiftly through the Canadian Senate and Canada s House of Commons to become the Act that established July 27 as Canada s Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, in perpetuity. She has been working with others at various levels in other nations, to try to get all 25 nations that were allied during the Korean War and provided military or medical units to Korea to make July 27 a recognized day of remembrance in all of them. Senator Martin was in Brampton, Ontario, as a member of the official party at ceremonies held the same day at the Korea War Veterans National Memorial Wall. The day before that she had been in Washington, DC, representing the Government of Canada at the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the Mall.
