2 Service Overview The Daughters of Charity Child and Family Service operate several different types of services including: Family Centres Fostering Service / Time Wise Preschool and early education

3 The Service has also developed and launched a number of programmes for use with children and families including: Understanding Mental Illness The Help Stop Bullying Programme Relaxation C.D. for Parents.

4 Cherry Orchard Family Centre Serving the needs of Children, Adolescents and Families in Dublin West. We work in a needs-led, strengths-based and solutions-focused way with families to support them in creating the lives they want to live.

13 Who can Refer? Referrals can be made by families directly by completing a referral form. Agencies can refer directly by referral form and a social report is required where applicable. You can drop in or telephone our administrator Elaine on or us at cofamilycentre@docharity.net

14 Referral Procedure Referrals to IYs group come from 2 sources: -Identified need from the waiting list. -Identified need in the course of direct work with family attending the centre.

15 The Incredible Years The Incredible Years parent training intervention is a series of programs focused on strengthening parenting competencies (monitoring, positive discipline, confidence) and fostering parents' involvement in children's school experiences in order to promote children's academic, social and emotional competencies and reduce conduct problems..

16 The Parent programs are grouped according to age. Babies & Toddlers (0-3 years), BASIC Early Childhood (3-6 years), BASIC School-Age (6-12 years) ADVANCED (6-12 years).

17 An Integrated Response IYs is a psycho-educational approach and can serve as a bridge to doing therapeutic work with the family. Needs-led some referrals come from Family workers case load. Some referrals from the IY group progress to therapeutic family work to promote the benefits of a parallel process taking place between mother, father and child.

18 Preparation Ensure all photocopying of hand-outs required over the course of the group are prepared: Assessment forms (pre and post group), Weekly homework sheets for each participant, Weekly lesson chapter for each participant, Weekly evaluation sheet for each participant, Weekly evaluation sheet for each facilitator, Weekly attendance sheet (to be completed by facilitator). Put weekly chapter onto audio if identified literacy difficulty for any member of the group.

19 Weekly Prep in Advance of Group Meet with co-facilitator to prepare for group, i.e., review the vignettes on DVD to be delivered in the session, plan the approach to the delivery of the lesson who will do what etc. Set up group room chairs, flip-chart. Set up refreshments for break.

20 Weekly Post Group Facilitator completes weekly attendance and weekly evaluation sheet. Review the session and facilitator delivery: Identify what to bring to monthly peer support session. Plan follow-up required with group participants during the week, i.e. phone calls and/or extra 1:1 session for a group member who was unable to attend the session or a group member who appears to be struggling to grasp the topic/technique being taught.

21 External Supports o Attend monthly Incredible Years Peer Support Group (2.5hrs monthly). o Progressed on to monthly coaching with Archways and COFC facilitators.

22 Group Leaders Skills set and experience IY Training Peer support Archways IYs implementation group Belief in the benefits and enthusiastic approach Identifying needs of family and advocating within / outside the service on behalf of the family

23 Post Group Completion Meet individually with each group participant to complete the appropriate screening tools (SDQ s), Post Assessment Forms and get general feedback from the group.

24 Feedback from Parents One father stated that he found helpful was learning to stay calm in certain situations, using techniques like praise, time out, playing more with the kids and most of all even though it seems obvious now is storytelling at night which I found very helpful at bedtimes.

25 One Parent commented on the final session Thank you so much for changing my life. Now I know how I should do with my children. With your programme I feel stronger and I can manage with all my problems with my children. We are happier. Thanks a million.

26 Other parents comments include Found session very helpful as l needed to learn to stay calm and ignore bad behaviour more often Problem solving is one of my best topics and I am so glad to complete the course I enjoyed all of the sessions. This programme taught me to love my children more and how to spend time with them. I really learnt a lot on the programme and I appreciate it.

27 Future Development Continue to promote and practise an integrated community wide response, - Continue to co-facilitate IY Programmes in COFC and the Community - TCM Programme potential to build on structures being put in place. (the child and the parent are learning the same skills which reinforces the learning and promotes consistency in approach from parents, schools and services)

28 Benefits and the implications of inter-agency working Benefits: promoting positive working relationships, reduce duplication of services, promotes focused interventions and consistency in approach. Implications: time intensive, labour intensive in terms of co-ordination of diaries and availability.
