Course Syllabus Registered providers of: Health & Safety authority approved Occupational First aid training No 321 Registered providers of: Health & Safety executive approved (UK) Rescue emergency care (REC) training. Registered providers of: Irish heart foundation/american heart association approved BLS,CPR & AED training.

2 LESSON 1 ASSESSMENT, ACCIDENT SCENE MANAGEMENT Define First Aid. List the responsibilities of the first aider. Define primary survey (ABC - medical and AcBC - trauma. List the four life-threatening conditions. List the vital signs & discuss their importance in relation to casualty assessment. Describe the approach and action at an emergency situation. Present a report on a simulated patient to the simulated arriving ambulance crew/doctor. Describe the need for self-protection at an incident scene. List the rules of bandaging. Demonstrate the primary & Secondary Survey. Demonstrate the recovery/safe airway position. Demonstrate on a fellow student the ability to take a pulse at the radial and carotid arteries, noting its rate, volume and rhythm. Demonstrate on a fellow Assessment breathing noting rate & volume. Demonstrate, using a triangular bandage, a narrow fold, storage fold, arm sling and elevation sling. Demonstrate tying a reef knot. LESSON 2 BLEEDING & SHOCK List the components of the circulatory system. List 3 functions of the blood. Differentiate between the three different types of external bleeding. List five signs and/or symptoms of more than 30% blood loss. Describe the control of bleeding using Posture, Elevation, Examination and Pressure (P.E.E.P). Describe the management of internal bleeding

3 Demonstrate the application of pre-packed sterile dressings to various body sites (minimum two). Demonstrate the control of severe bleeding using Posture, Elevation, Examination and Pressure (P.E.E.P). Demonstrate the management of a simulated foreign body on a simulated wound. Demonstrate on a fellow student treatment for a nose bleed SHOCK Define shock State the two primary causes of shock List seven signs and symptoms of shock Describe the treatment for a shocked casualty Describe how using vital signs a deteriorating casualty may be recognised Demonstrate the position used to treat a shocked casualty LESSON 3 Breathing Difficulties. Define respiration List the component parts of the respiratory system List two functions of the respiratory system List the % of oxygen in inspired and expired air Define asphyxia Describe the general management of asphyxia Describe the ABC drill Demonstrate on a manikin the ABC drill. Demonstrate on a manikin/fellow student chin lift, head tilt action to maintain a clear airway. Demonstrate on a manikin mouth to mouth, and mouth to nose resuscitation for a period of not less than two minutes.

4 LESSON 4 CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) & CHOKING List the three questions asked of a choking casualty to confirm obstruction of the airway. Demonstrate one person CPR for not less than four minutes on a manikin. Demonstrate correct hand position for chest compressions while performing CPR on a manikin. Demonstrate the vomit position while performing CPR on a manikin. Demonstrate the treatment for an obstructed airway using back slaps and abdominal thrusts on a simulated patient when standing and when supine. LESSON 5 FRACTURES, SPRAINS, STRAINS AND DISLOCATIONS List four functions of the skeleton. Define a fracture. Differentiate between the different type of fracture. List five signs and symptoms of a fracture. Describe the dangers of uncontrolled movement of a fracture in a prehospital environment. Define a sprain. Define a strain. Define a dislocation. Treat a simulated fracture of the upper limb on a class member using bandages. Treat a simulated fracture of the lower limb on a class member using bandages. Treat a simulated soft tissue injury on a class member using Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate (R.I.C.E.) method.

5 LESSON 6 UNCONSCIOUSNESS List two functions of the nervous system. Define unconsciousness. List the four levels of responsiveness (AVPU). Alert Voice (response to) Pain (response to) Unresponsive (unconscious) Differentiate between concussion and compression. Describe management of head, eye and facial injuries. Define fainting. List four signs and symptoms of a faint. Describe the treatment of a faint. Using a simulated casualty demonstrate the recovery position. Using a simulated casualty demonstrate the primary survey and monitoring vital signs. Demonstrate the examination of a simulated unconscious casualty. Demonstrate the treatment of a faint on a simulated casualty. Demonstrate using items from first aid kit, the treatment of surface injuries to the head, eye and face, on a simulated casualty. LESSON 7 CRUSH AND SPINAL INJURIES Discuss in relation to spinal injuries, the mechanism of injury and relate it to a high index of suspicion of spinal cord injury. Discuss the AcBC (airway, cervical spine, breathing and circulation) approach to a trauma victim. Discuss in relation to crush injuries, the importance of the 15 minute rule. Demonstrate head stabilisation on a simulated spinal injured casualty. Demonstrate a jaw thrust on a simulated unconscious casualty. Revise CPR skills on a manikin.

6 LESSON 8 Major Injuries List the signs & symptoms of the various chest injuries. Discuss the importance of early recognition of the signs & symptoms of chest injuries. List the signs & symptoms of abdominal injuries & discuss their treatment. List the signs & symptoms of pelvic fractures and discuss their treatment. Demonstrate the treatment of chest, abdominal & pelvic injuries. LESSON 9 MAJOR MEDICAL EMERGENCIES. List the functions of the heart. Describe the role & location of the coronary arteries. List six contributory factors for heart disease. Define Angina. List six signs and symptoms of heart attacks (myocardial infarction). Define cardiac arrest. Describe the general pre-hospital treatment required for heart disorders. List the four links in the chain of survival. Define Stroke. List the questions to be asked of a stroke victim. Demonstrate the semi recumbent position. LESSON 10 COMMON MEDICAL EMERGENCIES Define diabetes. Define epilepsy. Define asthma. Describe the management of a medical emergency. Demonstrate the treatment of an asthma attack.
