1 Willow Creek Academy Curriculum Map: 6 th Grade ELA Unit Title & Time Frame First 6 Weeks Class Building Unit Words Their Way: Student Work Text - E 20 Sorts Content, Objectives, Standards Objective: Assess students reading and writing skills (Can student write a letter? What kind of sentences used? What is general level of vocabulary? Organization? Etc ) Begin the relationship building process. Provide students an opportunity to begin their Social Emotional Learning process by gaining trust and accountability with their classmates. RI.1, 2, 3, 4, 9 W.2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 L.1, 2, 3, 5 SL.1, 6 work on Derivational Relationships that help them sort words by identifying word parts. L.2,4,6 ELA Lesson, Projects, Assessments Introductions Class Contract Name Cards. Letter To and From Mr. Baker Defining the Needs of the Classroom Class Jobs Classroom Banners Project Class Rules Introduction: ELA Class Journal Reflections on Self Introduction/Refresher: Graphic Organizers and Note Taking Introduction/Refresher: Five Paragraph Essay Introduction: Words Their Way Vocabulary Worktext (see below) Introduction: Giggles in the Middle Text: Words Their Way. Description: This work text includes lesson and activities designed to instruct in phonics, vocabulary, and spelling. The main focus for 6th grade is Derivational Relationships where they learn how to sort words by pattern and meaning with an emphasis on meaning and related word parts. Arts, Technology and/or Environmental integration Arts Integration: Classroom Banners Project: Using Banners to reflect the qualities the class has chosen to embrace. Art skills are used in many activities and as an alternative expression of understanding. Technology Integration - The following is embedded into the curriculum: Google Chromebooks, Google Classroom, Prezi, , Google Drive, Google Apps, Google Browsing, Wikispaces, Wordpress, Trips, special activities, etc. 1
2 Giggles in the Middle: The Bizarre Mystery of Horribly Hard Middle School 125 activities Objective: Improve grammar using an interactive text that combines Reading, Writing, and Editing skills. RL.2, 3, 4, 5, 10 L.1, 2, 4, 5, 6 Text: Caught Ya Grammar with a Giggle For Middle School Description: An integrated system that teaches grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary, paragraphing, varied spelling structure, spelling of homophone and commonly misspelled words, use of literary devices, and how to avoid fragments, all within the context of building a story. Pacing: Five (5) activities a week for 25 weeks. Novel Study: Maniac Magee 8 Weeks read the novel, Maniac Magee. Students will be able to analyze the story for plot, theme, setting, and character development. RL.1,2,3,4,5,7 W.1,2,3,4,9,10 Read Out Louds Guided Work Packets Chapter summaries Guiding Questions Building Vocabulary Reflections Plot Maps Character Charts Map of Two Mills Project (see right) Assessments: Halloween in Two Mills Creative Story Expository Essay about Theme in Maniac Magee Novel Reflection Map of Two Mills: Students create a Map that shows the events from the Novel. Students must design where each event occurs on their maps, include a Legend, and the map must be at least 11 x 17 Extra credit to those who actually map Maniac s Path through Two Mills. End of Trimester 1 Toolbox Words 3-4 weeks focuses on how to use Adjectives and Adverbs. Opening and Delayed Adjectives Opening and Delayed Adverbs Activities: Michael Crichton s Jurassic Park 2
3 Holiday Reading 2 Weeks Novel Study: The Little Prince 6 Weeks read a novel of pages in length. Student will write a book review, or create an expressive art project that reflects analysis of literary devices within novel. read the novel, Maniac Magee. Students will be able to analyze the story for plot, theme, setting, and character development. Students will also learn about Allegories. R,7 W.1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10 Learning Activities: Choose and Read a Novel Write a Book Review Read Out Louds Character Charts Building Vocabulary Themes represented by the planets and occupants Fish Bowl Seminars Missing Prince/Pilot Poster Who or What is your Rose? Adults vs. Child The Planet Project (see right): Students will write a creative piece about a planet that the Little Prince visited on his way to Earth, but forgot to share with the Pilot. Students will also create an visual art Project to represent their planet and occupant. Expressive Art Project that reflects devices from the novel. The Planet Project (see left): Students create a visual product and present it to the class of a planet that the Little Prince visited on this way to Earth, but forgot share with the Pilot. Students will also write a creative piece about this planet and its occupant. Toolbox Phrases 4-6 weeks focuses on Phrases Assessments: Students choose a visual project/presentation that analyzes the lessons of the Little Prince (themes of the novel). 4 Fables, Myths, and Legends Unit 4-6 Weeks Objective: Explore, gain literacy and analyze forms of Oral and Written Fables, Myths, and Legends. TBD Collaborating with Social Studies TBD Student Chosen Visual Product Component to Unit SL.1,2,4, End of Trimester 2 Literature Circles: Student Groups 6-8 weeks read in Literature Circle Groups and engage in their learning process by determining their own learning activities following the Literature Circle Model. 6 th Grade Lit Circles are more limited in student choice to help model basic skills necessary.
