3 CHEMISTRY DEGREE MODULES MChem Chemistry F101 MChem Chemistry with a Year Abroad F103 MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry F104 These programmes are ideal if you intend to be a professional chemist. The four-year programme, accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) as satisfying the academic requirements for the award of Chartered Chemist (CChem), provides you with excellent academic training across all aspects of chemistry. You can broaden your experience in the third year by taking the year abroad or year in industry options. BSc Chemistry F100 This programme complements the MChem and is the degree of choice for those requiring a more general grounding in chemistry, perhaps as a prelude to working in the science industry, teaching or marketing in a scientific environment. This three-year degree provides you with excellent academic training across all aspects of chemistry and a number of transferable skills, such as report writing and presentation skills. MChem Forensic and Investigative Chemistry FF41 This course, which recently gained Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences accreditation, builds on the standard chemistry syllabus by adding modules in forensic chemistry which show how to apply this knowledge in a forensic science environment. While majoring on the chemistry knowledge, the course covers all aspects of forensic chemistry from scene to court room, adding transferable skills such as report writing and presentation skills to your repertoire. There is also an opportunity to study forensic science in Miami for one semester. BSc Chemical Physics FF31 MChem Chemical Physics with a Year Abroad F190 MChem Chemical Physics with a Year in Industry F191 A key feature of these courses is the interdisciplinary and coherent approach, which brings together chemistry, physics and mathematics. Chemical physics is an exciting and intellectually challenging area and you will be introduced to topics that reflect its full scope, such as the fabrication and properties of nanoparticles, laser systems and their applications, microsensors, computational modelling and photonics. Gain invaluable experience by taking the MChem programme which offers an industrial placement or year abroad in your third year. Chemistry with a Foundation Year 8F10 This programme provides an exceptional opportunity to study for a degree in a range of chemistry specialisations for students who do not have our traditional entry requirements. It is not only appropriate for school leavers but also for those who have already been out in the workplace for a while or are returning to study after a career break. Foundation Year Throughout the foundation year, you will study both chemistry and mathematics and can then choose to study either biology or physics depending on your interests. You can then progress onto one of our standard degrees or, for those who excel in the foundation year, onto our MChem with a Year Abroad or Year in Industry programmes. Whatever your choice, this will prepare you for a range of jobs from pharmaceuticals to teaching. If you are looking to change your existing career path then joining our foundation year in chemistry is a great way to do it. Please note we cannot guarantee any student a work placement as this decision rests with potential employers. Although students will be expected to source these placements themselves, support is available. If you have not successfully secured a placement by the end of your second year, you be will be transferred onto the standard programme. This brochure is accurate at the time of going to press. 4 FIND OUR FULL MODULE LISTING AT At UEA we have designed our courses to allow you flexibility to move between programmes as your expectations and requirements change. All MChem and BSc degrees start in the first year with the basics of organic, physical and inorganic chemistry, including the associated practical experience. So if you enter on the MChem programme (F101) and then decide your would like to swap to, say, a year in industry option (F104), and you have passed the necessary academic standard, it is a simple matter of filling in a form. Similarly F103, FF41, F190 and F191 share the same initial pathway. Transferring between the BSc and MChem, and vice versa, is equally straightforward. On the BSc programme you will undertake either a practical or literature research project. In all our MChem degrees you will have the chance to work on your own research project, alongside other research chemists. You will spend half your time in your fourth year on this activity. The topics will reflect your own personal interests and ambitions; several of our MChem projects have given rise directly to a published paper, and many have gone on to form the basis of future research. 5 FULFILLING YOUR POTENTIAL I am interested in working in the research sector for a pharmaceutical company, so I think my industrial placement as a medicinal chemist in a pharmaceutical company is a good stepping stone towards my goal. You will learn how to put theory into practice, make valuable contacts and give yourself an edge with employers in your chosen field. 8 What happens when you get in the way of irresistible attraction? UEA chemists placed hydrogen molecules between two attracted molecules to create a radical new way of producing clean energy. WHERE WILL YOU FIND YOUR ENERGY? Prof Greg Wildgoose s research into hydrogen fuel cells has uncovered exciting possibilities for new methods of generating clean, low-cost energy. He discovered that placing a hydrogen molecule inbetween two other irresistibly attracted molecules (known as a Frustrated Lewis Pair) produces the fundamental reaction that occurs in a hydrogen fuel cell this opens the way for cheaper and easier hydrogen energy production that could help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Our research is not only well regarded in the academic community, but contributes to the really important questions that today s scientists face. Our School s research activity spans a huge range of fields, and incorporates interdisciplinary work with biologists, computer scientists and many other specialists. We re ranked fourth in the country for the quality of our research output (REF2014), so studying at UEA really puts you at the forefront of chemical research, meaning UEA truly delivers on research-led teaching.
