The Incredible Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil Fish oil would not outrank the rest of the supplements in America, and be the most indemand dietary capsule in the list if the benefits of Omega-3 fish oil were not extensive. When included in the daily diet, fish oil is believed to combat various chronic diseases including breast cancer, coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, renal failure, depression and asthma, thus improving the quality of life. If there is one benefit that fish oil is ever so popular about, that would be its assistance in decreasing the mortality rate due to cardiovascular diseases. Omega-3 fish oil comes from the tissues of deep ocean water oily fish. The best oil comes from sardines, mackerel, herring and salmon. Omega-3 fish oil is touted to provide enormous health benefits and must be included in your daily diet. It is also good for children, and even animals, for example cats and dogs. The most significant health benefits of Omega-3 fish oil include the following. 2

Supports Heart Health / Cardiovascular Health Improves Brain Function The Omega-3 fish oil protects the heart from acquiring diseases. The fatty acids of this oil have been proven to reduce the amount of fatty deposits in the arteries. By lowering down the level bad cholesterol (LDL) and boosting up the good cholesterol (HDL), your heart is one step away from dying of a cardiovascular disease. The elements of Omega-3 fish oil are capable of reducing triglycerides (fat), lowering blood pressure, and decreasing blood clotting. Since benefits of Omega-3 fish oil include an amazing job in reducing fat deposits that clog in arteries, your heart is able to maintain maximum functionality via regular blood flow. The majority of the brain is made up of good fats known as fatty acids, and the majority of this good fat is Omega-3. Studies have shown that diets rich in Omega-3 can result in increased learning ability, problem-solving skills, focus, memory, and communication between cells. Omega-3 has also been shown to help promote a positive mood and emotional balance, and can help people maintain healthy mental ability as they age. Omega-3 fish oil is useful to people suffering from ADHD/ADD. It can help adults and children diagnosed with these disorders to remember better and focus on the things that they do. It helps them handle situations at home or school efficiently. 3

How Does Omega 3 Actually Help the Brain? Within the brain are neurons (cells which transmit messages throughout the brain and to other parts of the body). The membrane (or wall) around these neurons is made up of good fat. In order for the neurons to communicate properly, these membranes need to be flexible to allow vital molecules to pass through. Several factors, including age and diets high in cholesterol and saturated fats, can cause these membranes to stiffen and be less pliable. This stiffness does not allow the needed molecules to pass through the neurons correctly and can result in mood imbalances, difficulties in learning, difficulties in recalling information, and other decreases in brain function. By supplementing your diet with Omega-3 you can restore the flexible and pliable nature of the cell membranes to the neurons in your brain, resulting in increased cell communication and brain function. In addition, Omega-3 benefits brain function by acting as a blood cleanser, making the blood less sticky and more fluid. This allows more oxygen to reach the brain and in essence feeds the brain. Improves (lowers) High - Ipsum Blood Pressure and Improves Cholesterol Fish oil makes the blood thinner, and reduces the LDL levels of cholesterol in the body. It brings back LDL levels balanced with HDL. The properties of fish oil enable the LDL to continue deliver food cells, which is its primary function. It also keeps the HDL from doing its job to taking good care of the walls of veins and the arteries and converting plaque into the liver. This allows more oxygen to reach the brain and in essence feeds the brain. 4

Supports Joints People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can experience relief from taking Omega-3 fish oil. Increasing the amount of Omega-3 fats that you take also improves your knee related problems. Diabetes People with diabetes often have high triglyceride and low HDL levels. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help lower triglycerides and apoproteins (markers of diabetes), and raise HDL, so eating foods or taking fish oil supplements may help people with diabetes. Another type of Omega-3 fatty acid, ALA (from flaxseed, for example) may not have the same benefit as fish oil. Some people with diabetes can t efficiently convert ANA to a form of Omega 3 fatty acids that the body can use. Osteoporosis Some studies suggest that Omega-3 fatty acids may help increase levels of calcium in the body and improve bone strength, although not all results were positive. Some studies also suggest that people who don t get enough of some essential fatty acids (particularly EPA and gammalinolenic acid [GLA], an Omega- 6 fatty acid) are more likely to have bone loss than those with normal levels of these fatty acids. In a study of women over 65 with osteoporosis, those who took EPA and GLA supplements had less bone loss over 3 years than those who took placebo. Many of these women also experienced an increase in bone density. Also, some people with type 2 diabetes may have slight increases in fasting blood sugar when taking fish oil, so talk to your doctor to see if fish oil is right for you. 5

Colon Cancer Eating foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids seems to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. For example, Eskimos, who tend to have a high fat diet, but eat significant amounts of fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, have a low rate of colorectal cancer. Animal studies and laboratory studies have found that Omega-3 fatty acids prevent worsening of colon cancer. Preliminary studies suggest that taking fish oil daily may help slow the progression of colon cancer in people with early stages of the disease. Breast Cancer Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the leading cause of death from cancer among women, accounting for approximately 23 percent of the total cancer cases and 14 percent of cancer deaths each year. A consistent finding from scientific studies is that Omega-3 fatty acids protect against breast cancer while a higher intake of Omega-6 fatty acids are linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Studies include those that examined the fatty acid composition from breast tissue from patients with breast cancer and compared to those with with benign breast disease. The results showed that women with the highest ratio of the long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA+DHA) to Omega-6 fatty acids had a 67 percent reduced risk of breast cancer. To fully investigate the association between intake of Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and the risk of breast cancer, 26 publications that included 20,905 cases of breast cancer, and 883,585 controls were evaluated. Results demonstrated that the risk of breast cancer was reduced by 5 percent per every 100 mg per day of EPA+DHA. Interestingly, no protective effect was noted for fish consumption or the intake of the shorter chain Omega-3 fatty acid alpha linolenic acid that is found in flaxseeds, walnuts and canola oil. The results from this analysis indicate that women can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer by supplementing their diet with a high-quality fish oil. 6

Reduce Pain and Anxiety Omega-3 fish oil has been proven to contain properties that are effective to be used in fighting against pain, anxiety, and depression.omega-3 supplements can help relieve symptoms in some patients. People suffering from pain, anxiety, and depression have low levels of EPA and DHA. Omega-3 fish oil contains these fatty acids, so it helps in treating anxiety and depression. Reduce Asthma Symptoms A new study of Omega-3 s effect on exercise-induced asthma is yet another example of the benefits of this healthy type of fat. A study at Indiana University found that adults with mildto-moderate persistent asthma who took an Omega-3- rich fish oil supplement daily for three weeks improved their post-exercise lung function by 64 percent, allowing a 31 percent decrease in their use of emergency inhalers. Better Skin Omega-3 fish oil is made up with 2 primary fatty acids EPA and DHA. The EPA is touted to have effects, which impact the human skin. This fatty acid keeps your skin rehydrated for a longer period of time. Omega-3 fatty acid helps regulate the production of oil in your skin that triggers the acne and boosts the process of skin aging. If you take Omega 3 fish oil on a daily basis, you can delay skin aging and wrinkling, and look young and beautiful despite your age. People with exercise-induced asthma usually experience inflammation of the airway, called bronchoconstriction, immediately following exercise. 7

The standard American diet is rich in pro-inflammatory Omega- 6 fatty acids and low in Omega-3 fatty acids, which have an antiinflammatory effect. In this study, researchers found that while taking supplemental fish oil 3.2 grams of EPA and 2 grams of DHA daily samples of mucus taken from participants showed reduced amounts of proinflammatory cells and markers. It's important to note that the supplement used in this study was of high quality and filtered at a molecular level to eliminate contaminants like mercury. fish less than once per week. Also, a 2009 National Eye Institute (NEI) study that used data obtained from the Age- Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) found participants who reported the highest level of Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet were 30 percent less likely than their peers to develop macular degeneration during a 12-year period. Eye Benefits of Omega-3 Several studies suggest Omega-3 fatty acids may help protect adult eyes from macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Essential fatty acids also may help proper drainage of intraocular fluid from the eye, decreasing the risk of high eye pressure and glaucoma. In a large European study published in 2008, participants who ate oily fish (an excellent source of DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids) at least once per week had half the risk of developing neovascular ("wet") macular degeneration, compared with those who ate Omega-3 fatty acids also have been found to reduce the risk of dry eyes. In a study of more than 32,000 women between the ages of 45 and 84, those with the highest ratio of (potentially harmful) Omega-6 fatty acids to beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet (15-to-1) had a significantly greater risk of dry eye syndrome, compared with the women with the lowest ratio (less than 4-to-1). 8

The study also found that the women who ate at least two servings of tuna per week had significantly less risk of dry eye than women who ate one or fewer servings per week. Omega-3 fatty acids also may help treat dry eyes. In a recent study of dry eyes induced in mice, topical application of the Omega-3 fatty acid ALA led to a significant decrease in dry eye signs and inflammation associated with dry eye. Improve Fat Burning When Peter Howe and his colleagues at the University of South Australia studied the effects of diet and exercise on the body, they found fish oil supplements and exercise made for a powerful fat-loss During the study, overweight and obese adults with metabolic syndrome, and a greater risk of heart disease, took Omega-3 fish oil daily in combination with moderate aerobic exercise three times a week for 12 weeks. Body fat stores, particularly abdominal fat, were significantly reduced in the fish-oilplus-exercise group, but not in those who used fish oil or exercise alone. Bottom line: The insulinsensitizing ability of DHA, the anti-inflammatory benefits of EPA, and the fat burning benefits of both make choosing a supplement containing significant amounts of each a good idea.
