1 The highlight of 2012 will be the first Kyiv International Biennial of contemporary art ARSENALE 2012 (curator David Elliott) planned as an international showcase for contemporary art. The Biennial is an occasion on which to create new alliances; it is about going beyond citybranding strategies, leading to collaboration and new dialogues. From the beginning its aim is to develop and present a program that challenged traditional thinking and encouraged innovative, creative expression in Ukraine. The event will reflect the blend of experiment and enjoyment of innovation and energy in Kyiv city and in other cities of Ukraine through parallel programs. The Biennial will also help to develop the cultural policy of the city creating the close partnership between the local artistic communities, policy makers, mass-media representatives and business. The event will encourage the development of the cultural industries and the local cultural tourism. During the Biennial will be realized a big educational program for scholars, students, curators, artists and critics exploring the artistic, theoretical, political and other issues of such large-scale international exhibition project. The Biennale in Kyiv will, every two years, bring a wide range of established and emerging contemporary art to the capital, providing an international platform on which some of the best artists and creators internationally as well as from Ukraine and the region can be seen. The Biennale will enable Ukrainian artists to see their work more clearly within an international context and will create international cultural links that do not at present exist. From outside it will attract a diverse international audience who might not otherwise visit the Ukraine and for the public in the region it will provide a broad experience of international contemporary art within the context of how this relates to life today. The Biennale will respond to Ukraine s unique cultural history. Traditionally a melting pot between many different cultures, Ukraine will show its own perspectives on the world and also benefit from those of others

2 Last but not least, the Biennale will identify Kyiv as a world cultural capital and by extension will establish the Ukraine as a country that values, supports and defends contemporary artistic freedom and expression. REBIRTH AND APOCALYPSE IN CONTEMPORARY ART Dates : 24 May July 2012 Vernissage (Exhibition Preview) on the 23 rd May Biennale opens to the public on the 24 th of May No. of artists: approximately 100 international artists, 20 Ukrainian artsist Venue: Mystetskyi Arsenal Projected attendance: Ukrainians, people from other countries Echoing the first words of A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Charles Dickens famous novel set at the time of the French Revolution, this exhibition jumps forward to the present to consider how contemporary art and aesthetics use the past to express the future. The exhibition will be organised around four hub ideas: The Restless Spirit Looks at the way in which we derive strength from beliefs, myths and concepts of the universe that are not governed by material need; In the Name of Order Examines how under the pretext of rationalism power attempts to dominate culture through the creation of self-serving hierarchies; Flesh Takes the human body, its appetites, desires and limitations as its central theme; The Unquiet Dream Focuses on nightmares and premonitions of disaster, without which we are unable to change.

3 CURATOR: DAVID ELLIOTT (Great Britain) David Elliott is a curator, writer and cultural historian, who has directed some of the most innovative and dynamic museums of modern and contemporary art worldwide. He curated the 17th International Biennial of Sydney (THE BEAUTY OF DISTANCE: Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age, ); established and headed Mori Art Museum in Tokyo; was the director and curator of Modern Museum in Stockholm and Istanbul Modern Museum.

4 ARTISTS BASED IN GERMANY: 1. John Bock Bock participated in numerous international exhibitions, among others the Venice Biennial (1999 and 2005) and the documenta 11 in Kassel (2002). He has also had solo exhibitions in a number of international institutions including MoMA and the New Museum in New York, Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Kunsthalle in Basel, Secession, Wien, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. He has participated in various group shows including Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art, Barbican Centre, London, and "Laughing in a Foreign Language", The Hayward Gallery, London, both in John Bock: Maltreated Frigate, a monograph of his work, was published by Walther Koenig Ltd, Bock is represented by Galerie Klosterfelde, Berlin, and Anton Kern Gallery, New York. Boris Mikhailov (photographs, large) Boris Mikhailov is a photographer born in Ukraine in Challenging and provocative, Mikhailov s photographs document human casualties living in post-communist Eastern Europe after the demise of the Soviet Union. He is the recipient of the 1999 Krazna-Krausz Photography Book Award for Case History, the 2000 Hasselblad Foundation International Award and Citibank 2001 Photography Prize. Mikhailov was selected for representing the Ukranian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale. Lives and works in Berlin.
