This chapter examines three models of the relationship of exposure timing to neuropsychiatric outcomes. First, it considers prenatal nutrition deprivation and its potential effects on neural tube defects and schizophrenia. Second, an example is chosen where a severe prenatal insult (maternal thyroid hormone deficiency due to lack of iodine in the diet) leads to a frank disorder (creatinism) and a lesser prenatal insult (material suboptimal thyroid function) leads to a more subtle deficit (cognitive deficit). Third, it considers an example of cumulative exposure (prenatal and postnatal exposure to environmental lead) that leads to subtle deficits in neuropsychological function. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the complexity of neuropsychological development over the life course. Towards an Integrative Model of Neurobehavioral Development Joan Stiles, Judy S. It focuses on dynamic models of brain development and considers what predictions they might make about the effects of early injury on the emerging organization of the neural system. The final section looks forward and considers the implications of these new models for both typical and atypical trajectories of neurobehavioral development. Damage during early development is irreversible, and the consequences of derailing the time schedule of the developmental processes are therefore long-term. We get only one chance to develop a brain. Brains do not develop normally in the absence of critical genetic signaling, and they do not develop normally in the absence of essential environmental input. The key to understanding the origins and emergence of both the brain and behavior lies in understanding how inherited and environmental factors are engaged in the dynamic and interactive processes that define and direct development of the neurobehavioral system. This book focuses on children who suffered focal brain insult (typically stroke) in the preor perinatal period which provides a model for exploring the dynamic nature of early brain and cognitive development. In most, though not all, of the cases considered, the injuries affect substantial portions of one cerebral hemisphere, resulting in patterns of neural damage that would compromise cognitive ability in adults. However, longitudinal behavioral studies of this population of children have revealed only mild cognitive deficits, and preliminary data from neural damage functional brain imaging studies suggest that alternative patterns of functional organization emerge in the wake of early injury. This book posits that the capacity for adaptation is not the result of early insult. Rather, it reflects normal developmental processes which are both dynamic and adaptive operating against a backdrop of serious perturbation of the neural substrate. 6 One of every six children suffers from some form of neurodevelopmental abnormality, mostly of unknown causes. Environmental pollution is known or is suspected of causing damage to brain development, but we routinely do not test chemicals for such effects. The brain is our most complex organ, and its complicated development is uniquely sensitive to toxic effects caused by industrial chemicals. Because we rely on the full function of the entire brain, even small deficits may negatively impact our brain functions. Unfortunately, toxic metals, pesticides, and many other industrial chemicals now interfere with optimal brain development. The toxic effects incurred will last for a lifetime. Due to serious blunders, we have created a public health catastrophe by allowing pollution with chemical brain drainers. But prevention is possible and realistic, so that we can make prudent decisions to protect the brains of our children and grandchildren. Page 6 of 6
