4 Determining Air-Supply An average person will breathe approximately 40 liters of air per minute during normal activity During firefighting operations a firefighter will breathe approximately 100 liters of air per minute Air Consumption Rate l/m= 30 Minutes of air l/m= 12 Minutes of air

7 Cylinder Standards Hydrostatic Testing Cylinders are hydrostatically tested at 7500 psi Kevlar bottles every three years Carbon fiber bottles every five year All Cylinders have a 15 year life span Cylinder Labels Orange Asset Tags Used on older cylinders to identify White Cylinder Band All new cylinders will be manufactured with department issued numbers First Number is in-service year Second number is group number

21 Use SOM 5.03 S.C.B.A. shall be used by all personnel that operate in: A contaminated atmosphere or one which may suddenly become contaminated An oxygen deficient atmosphere or suspected of being oxygen deficient An atmosphere in which the temperature of the gasses may cause illness, injury or death upon inhalation Confine spaces above and below ground

22 Inspection SCBA inspection shall be completed Before start of shift After each use If there is any damage, suspected damage, or system malfunction

23 Inspection Check battery condition by holding yellow button Ensure green light flashes to indicate ok Inspect the overall condition of the air-pack Inspect condition of cylinder Obvious cracks or deformities Any abrasions larger in width of a dime Any damage to the male threads Ensure cylinder pressure reads a minimum of 4000 psi Confirm hydrostatic test date and manufacture date are within minimum standard

24 Inspection Inspect condition of back frame Check for cracks and deformities Inspect condition of straps Check for tares, burns, and worn material Inspect condition of hoses Check for cracks and positive connections Ensure regulator is clean and gasket is in good condition

25 Inspection Activate system by turning cylinder valve open Listen for the system to activate Three chirps and vibralert Listen for any possible leaks in system Ensure that the cylinder pressure gauge and the control unit are within 200 psi of each other Allow pre alarm and full alarm to activate Activate full alarm manually and reset system Turn bottle off and bleed pressure Exercise vibralert Turn off system by depressing yellow button twice

26 Maintenance Perform SCBA Inspection SCBA packs can be wiped clean or if necessary can be washed with a mild soap and water solution, rinsed and dried out of direct sunlight. Avoid getting water, soap or debris in any fittings or connections by charging the system SCBA Masks can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution and dried with a soft towel Paper towels are not recommended due to scratching of the lens

27 Maintenance Battery Compartment Change all six batteries if system indicates low battery Acceptable batteries Duracell Alkaline MN1500 Duracell Alkaline MX1500 Duracell Alkaline PC1500 Energizer Alkaline EN91 Energizer Alkaline E91

28 Bi-Annual Maintenance Air packs are sent to appropriate station Air packs are bench tested by certified CFD personnel Air pack parts are all inspected by certified CFD personnel

29 Safety Interruption in airflow Open purge valve to allow for a free flow of air Ensure the cylinder valve did not shut off Follow the route of air from the regulator to the cylinder checking for obstructions, damage, and/or leaks Notify supervisor and exit to a safe area immediately Free flow of air Check purge valve to ensure it is closed Gate down cylinder valve to an appropriate air flow Notify supervisor and exit to a safe area immediately

30 Safety If Vibralert activates above ¼ bottle pressure If the internals of the pressure reducer fails the air pack will fall into a fail safe mode, causing the vibralert to activate If this situation occurs, exit the area immediately
