Future Plans EUMETSAT DCP Workshop Marlin O. Perkins May 26-27,
Program Review Customer Service Active assignments verse inactive assignments Active platforms verse inactive platforms Data processing Message handling Data dissemination System use Authorized users Unauthorized users Interference System Resources System configuration Frequency management 2
Areas of Concern Assignments (Time Slots) Consider shorter durations (i.e., 30 sec, 15 sec, 5 sec) Transmitters with stable clocks FDMA/TDMA System capacity is dependent on length of assignment TDMA is time consuming to manage and has its limitations Frequency Losses Guard bands Unauthorized users Interference Management How to use the 400 KHz more efficiently? Will more frequency solve the problem? 3
Program Planning 3-Year Plan Develop and implement new DCS processing system (DAPS-II) Routinely review status of assignments/platforms 7-Year Plan Develop and implement a realtime interference location system Routinely determine authorized DCS users 10-Year Plan Certify High Data Rate manufacturers and transmitters Transition from 100 bps transmitters to 300/1200 bps transmitters 15-Year Plan Investigate CDMA techniques for DCS Develop prototype CDMA transmitters and prototype CDMA processing system Determination modifications to existing DCS platforms 4
Current Regional Activities Implementing new DCS Automatic Processing System (DAPSII) DAPSII delivered to the Wallops CDA station System is awaiting database update Transitioning to from 100 bps to 300 and 1200 bps transmitters Restructuring channels for 15 sec and 5 sec transmission windows Coordinating with users to reprogram platforms Participates in meetings and conferences on current and future DCS activities Satellite telemetry Interagency Working Group (STIWG) Technical Working Group NOAA-NASA Communication Working Group Manufacturers meetings Direct Readout Users Conference Development of a Transmitter Location System Task on hold awaiting budget approval NOAA will contract for interference mitigation service 5
Future Regional Activities Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Development - CDMA Overlay Concept - CDMA Only Concept - Considerations in applying CDMA to DCS - Prototype Transmitter and Prototype Processing System Lossless Data Compression - Determine whether lossless data compression will be useful on the DCPR communications link - Lossless data compression may be able to reduce the amount of transmission time associated with each DCPR message - Overall result would be to increase the capacity of the DCPR communications system as more DCPs would be able to be supported - Implementation conceivably be done without modification to command and data acquisitation station DCPR Enhancements to Increase Capacity - Root Raised Cosine Filtering - Rationale and Advantages/Disadvantages - RRC Implementation considerations 6
Current International Activities Support federal agencies to accomplish their global mission - NASA Space Shuttle Program AERONET - National Ocean Service - National Science Foundation Coordinate DCP activation with EUMETSAT and JMA Coordination of certification procedures 7
Future International Activities Continue support for national and international agencies - NASA plans to increase the shuttle monitoring network - AERONET plans to deploy more platforms - National Science Foundation - National Hurricane Center Identify methods to promote the international data collection service Consider survey to determine users and need for international data collection service Determine alternatives to support global missions 8
