1 Want to train to be an Engineer or Electrician? Want to be paid while you train? Electrical Engineering & Electrical Craft Apprenticeship Industrial Automation & Control Ltd., the UK s leading independent systems integrator of PLC systems, variable speed drives & Scada systems is looking to expand its team with the addition of an Electrical Engineering Apprentice and an Electrical Craft Apprentice. IAC is searching for two enthusiastic and hardworking apprentices to join their team. The Engineering role is targeted at individuals with ambitions of becoming an electrical technician or engineer. The Craft role is targeted towards individuals with ambitions of becoming a panel wireman or electrician. Engineering Apprentice: Applicants should hold or expect to hold 5 GCSE s at grade C or above, which should include Math s, English and Science. Grade B or A/A* in Math s is preferable but not essential. Also essential are good communication skills and the drive and ambition to become an electrical engineer. The Engineering apprenticeship training comprises four years of hard work, culminating in a HNC and Level 3 NVQ. The apprentice would undertake set periods in most departments of IAC including production, drawing office, test, service, applications engineering and sales to achieve an understanding of the overall operation of the company. Apprentices are required to balance a full time job along with day release at college or University and the demands of vocational training at our local training provider s premises. Craft Apprentice: applicants should hold or expect to hold 5 GCSE s or equivalent at grade D or above, which should include Maths, English and Science. Applicants should enjoy working with their hands and have good communication skills as well as the drive and ambition to work in the electrical industry. IAC s apprentice training comprises four years of hard work, hopefully culminating in a Btec National Diploma or City & Guilds Level 3 and Level 3 NVQ. The apprentice would undertake set periods in the production & test departments of IAC to achieve an understanding of the operation of the company. Apprentices are required to balance a full time job along with day release at college or University and the demands of vocational training at our local training provider s premises. IAC operates in all major industries, offering turn key solutions to heavy industry. The company is well established and operates world wide. Successful applicants would be expected to travel within the UK on occasion, and must be eligible to work in the UK. If you are looking for a new challenge and feel you have the talent and enthusiasm to succeed at IAC, please contact the HR department on quoting reference APP16. Applicants will need to fill out an IAC application form. Deadline for applications Saturday 18 th June Completed applications can be ed to klewis@iac-ltd.co.uk or posted to the address below. Industrial Automation & Control Ltd. Delta House, Meadows Road, Queensway Meadows, Newport. NP19 4SS
2 An apprenticeship with IAC The IAC apprentice training comprises four years of hard work, hopefully culminating in a Level 3 or 4 academic qualification and Level 3 NVQ. At the end of this period, IAC cannot guarantee a position within the company, but historically have always done so for those who pass the 4 year apprenticeship. After initial induction, the apprentice is introduced to a suitable mentor, who would be utilised as an initial contact for any problems confronting him/her during the training period. This mentor would be selected carefully and would normally be someone who has only recently been through the same education process a young engineer for example. The first year starts with a period of familiarisation working in the production area. This leads into a period spent at Newport & District Group Training doing Level 2 NVQ work for around 3 months. This is combined with the commencement of a day release course in college. Normally this would be Level 3 Btec National Certificate which is conducted on a day release basis. Craft apprentices will study a suitable day release Level 2 City & Guilds qualification Both the NVQ and academic studies require a portion of work which is done at home. It is essential that this work is completed at the time of asking, and not allowed to accumulate. Historically, failure to keep up to date with homework is the single source of failure. During years 1 and 2, the apprentice would continue with work in the production area, learning basic skills in assembly and wiring. This is the last area of manufacture prior to despatch, and it is essential that the work methods are clearly understood, irrespective of where the apprentice eventually ends up. The application, project and sales engineers must understand the implications of their own actions on the manufacturing process and experience in assembly should give them this. At the end of each year, the apprentice has an appraisal interview with the management team to discuss progress and provide the apprentice with an opportunity to discuss any issues relating to his/her work. More importantly, this interview is used to discuss future training needs and map out a short term career path. During years 3 and 4, the engineering apprentice is given experience in most other departments in the company, including the drawing office followed by the test, service, applications engineering and sales. The purpose is to give the apprentice experience in all aspects of the business, to enable them to make a rational career choice at the end of the training period. At this time Craft apprentices will continue their learning within the production department which is supplemented by a period in test. During the fourth year appraisal, a focus will be made on this career path and, hopefully, a position within IAC will be found. This will, however, depend on the circumstances prevailing at the time, and the availability of a suitable position within the company. As said earlier, IAC have always found a place for apprentices who successfully complete the four year training period, but this cannot be guaranteed. Over the years, IAC have had a great deal of success with their apprentice scheme, largely due to the diversity of the work undertaken and the variety of skills required within the business. A great deal of investment is made in the training and developing of young engineers and this is not undertaken lightly. The company realises that skilled engineers provide the future for the current team and every graduating Modern Apprentice at IAC bar one has remained with the company. Hopefully this is a testament to the quality of the training, and also to the culture of the workforce. IAC became winners of the Est NET SME of the Year award 2014 and have also seen an individual apprentice awarded apprentice of the year 2015, along with picking up accolades from our training providers. The judges of the awards commended IAC s commitment to training and development of its staff. The company firmly believes that the apprentice scheme is the foundation on which the company has been built, and that there is no better apprentice scheme in the locality.
