Your name as it appears in your AC records and the name you prefer to be called. 2.) Your phone number. 3.) Your address. (We will only use outside of AC Online if there is a problem with AC Online.) 4.) Your mailing address. 5.) Which times you prefer for each of the ON-CAMPUS speeches. The speeches will be given on the Washington Street Campus in Parcells Hall Room 406. You MUST speak on all three

4 dates. You may choose to speak at EITHER 12:30 or 6:30 p.m. on each date. If you do not specify a choice, I will assign you a speaking time. 6.) Any special concerns or problems you may have regarding this course or subject or anything else you would like me to know. Send the and then check for a response indicating that I have received it. If you do not receive a response within 24 hours, you need to resend. I You must complete this assignment before you being any other reading or assignments. The deadline for completing this assignment is June 6 at 11:30 p.m. Module One: June 4-June 14 Read Lectures 1-8 and Textbook Chapters 1, 3, 14, 5, 6, 7 and 2 Homework Assignment #1: Getting Acquainted Go to the Getting Acquainted Discussion Forum, and post some information to allow me and your classmates to get to know you better. Within your posting, answer the following questions: What motivated you to take an online speech class? What are your career goals? How do you think this class will help you achieve those goals? What specific aspects of public speaking do you hope to improve upon during this class? (For example, you might want to learn to organize your presentations more clearly, or to gain speaking confidence. You might want to work on particular goals such as improving your articulation or boosting eye contact, etc.) If you have access to a digital photo of yourself or a web site you would like to share, please attach or add it. You must post your "Getting Acquainted" information by Wednesday, June 6 at 11:30 p.m. Then, please respond to at least 2 of your classmates' postings. You must post these responses by Friday, June 8 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #2: Communication Apprehension Copy the URL below and paste it into your browser (do not click on it) on/survey/prca/ and take the short self-test called the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension. Copy your scores and them to me through AC Online . (Do not use

5 the function built into the form.) Then go to the Discussion Board, click on the topic Communication Apprehension and respond to the following: Describe how you feel both mentally and physically when you have to give a speech in public. Do you feel your scores on the PRCA accurately reflect your level of communication apprehension? Why or why not? You must post your initial response by Friday, June 8 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #3: Listening Take the Listening Self Assessment Quiz. Then go to the Listening Discussion Forum and respond to the following: How did you score on the Listening Self Assessment? Do you think your score is accurate? Why or why not? Do you consider yourself a good listener? Why or why not? What specific steps could you take to improve your listening skills? You must post your initial response by Monday, June 11 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Wednesday, June 13 at 11:30 p.m. Review the requirements, policies and guidelines for class discussions at located in Start Here Homework Assignment #4: Company Speech Topic Using the Homework 4 Drop Box, submit the name of the company you will profile in your informative speech on June 19. Go to the Homework/Assignments section to review the assignment for this speech. You must submit your topic by Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 p.m. Click on the Drop Box and the Drop Box page will appear. Enter a title (for example: Jill Gibson's Company Speech Outline) and a message (if desired).

6 Click the attachments button to add a file. The Attachments window appears. Click Browse, locate the file you want to upload, then click Open You are returned to the Attachments window. Click Upload File. The file is then added to the uploaded files section. If you want to upload another file, repeat this process. When you have uploaded all the files you need, click Finished. Click Submit when you are ready to turn in your work. See the AC Online Orientation to see a demonstration of this process Homework Assignment #5: Audience Analysis Go to the Audience Analysis Discussion Forum and post at least one specific question for your classmates that will allow you to learn more about them in order to tailor your speech to meet their needs. Make sure the question you ask relates to your speech topic and will help you compose a speech that will interest this audience. You must post your question(s) by Wednesday, June 13 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to ALL of your classmates questions. Failure to respond to ALL of your classmates will result in a grade of zero for this assignment. You must post your responses by at Saturday, June 16 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #6: Support Material Submit complete bibliographical citations in either APA or MLA style for the two sources you will use in your Company Speech. For information on APA and MLA style, see the Resources icon under the Lessons tab. Check the Homework/Assignments section to review the assignment for this speech. You must submit this assignment to the Homework 6 Drop Box by Thursday, June 14 at 11:30 p.m. Module Two: June 17-June 23 Read Lectures 9-17 and Textbook Chapters 4, 8, 10, 9, 12 and 13 Homework Assignment #7: Purpose/Central Idea Submit your specific purpose statement, central idea and organizational pattern for your Company Speech to the Homework 7 Drop Box. You must submit your homework by Friday, June 15 at 11:30 p.m.

7 Homework Assignment #8: Organization Go to the Organization Discussion Forum and respond to the following: Why is proper organization so important for effective business presentations? Have you ever experienced a situation in which a speaker's inability to organize his or her thoughts led to confusion and miscommunication? You must post your initial response by Saturday, June 16 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Monday, June 18 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #9: Effective Introductions Go to the Effective Introductions Discussion Forum and respond to the following: What do you feel is the key to writing a good introduction? How does changing the attention-getter affect the overall tone of the speech and/or the introduction's effectiveness? How do you plan to achieve the four objectives of a good introduction in your Company Speech? You must post your comments by Sunday, June 17 at 11:30 p.m. Then, respond to at least two of your classmates' postings. You must post your responses by Tuesday, June 19 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #10: Rehearsal/Delivery Skills Go to the Rehearsal/Delivery Skills Discussion Forum and respond to the following: Describe what you are doing to practice to deliver your upcoming Company Speech. Are there any particular aspects of your speech delivery that you want to improve upon? What steps are you taking to polish your delivery skills? You must post your initial response by Monday, June 18 at 11:30 p.m.

8 Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your support and suggestions for improving delivery. You must post these responses by Tuesday, June 19 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #11: Outline Submit your complete preparation outline for the Company Speech in the Drop Box. Go to Lesson #11: Outlining and the Resources portion of the course for more information on preparing your outline. You must turn in your outline by Sunday, June 17 at 11:30 p.m. Major Assignment: Company Speeches will be given ON CAMPUS on Tuesday, June 19 at either 12:30 or 6:30 pm. Bring your PowerPoint presentation, your preparation outline and your note cards to hand in. Also, your PowerPoint to yourself (through your AC gmail account or a personal address that can be accessed through the Internet) as a backup. Be sure you have confirmed your speaking time! For more information on the Company Speech Assignment, go to the Homework/Assignments portion of the course. Module Three: June 22-July 5 Read Lectures 18, 19 and 20 and Textbook Chapters 15 and 16 Homework Assignment #12: Persuasive Speech Audience Analysis Go to the Persuasive Analysis Discussion Forum, click on the topic Persuasive Analysis and post at least one specific question for your classmates that will allow you to learn more about them in order to tailor your speech to meet their needs. You must post your question(s) by Friday, June 22 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to ALL of your classmates questions. Failure to respond to ALL of your classmates will result in a grade of zero for this assignment. You must post your responses by Sunday, June 24 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #13: Motivated Sequence Go to the Motivated Sequence Discussion Forum. Post a brief explanation of how you will accomplish each step of Monroe's Motivated Sequence in your Persuasive Speech. To review the

9 motivated sequence, go to Lectures: Lesson #19. For example, if you are giving a presentation with the specific purpose statement "To persuade my audience to purchase Pete's Pooch Perfume" your post might look something like this Attention: I will gain the audience's attention by telling a true-life story about how owning a smelly dog destroyed my friend's love life. Need: I will provide statistics documenting the increase of unpleasant dog odors and the consequences of the terrible smell. Satisfaction: I will explain how my product will solve the problem. Visualization: I will tell a detailed story that allows the audience to picture the benefits of using my product. Action: I will tell my audience exactly how to purchase my product and I will urge them to buy now! You must post this information by Sunday, June 24 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your observations regarding their use of the motivated sequence. You must post these responses by Tuesday, June 26 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #14: Persuasive Speech Specific Purpose, Central Idea and bibliographical citations Submit your specific purpose statement and central idea for your Persuasive Speech and the complete bibliographical citations in either APA or MLA style for the two sources you will use in this speech. For information on APA and MLA style see the information on Bibliography Formats within the Resources portion of this course as well as Lesson #8: Research and Plagiarism. To review the assignment for this speech, look under the Homework/Assignments section. You must submit the assignment by Monday, June 25 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #15: Persuasive Speech Outline Submit your complete preparation outline for the Persuasive Speech in the Drop Box. Check out the Resources section of the course for more information on preparing your outline. You must submit your assignment by Friday, June 29 at 11:30 p.m. Major Assignment: Persuasive Speeches will be given ON CAMPUS on Tuesday, July 3 at either 12:30 or 6:30 pm. Bring your PowerPoint presentation, your preparation outline and your note cards to hand in. Also, your PowerPoint to yourself (through your AC gmail account or a personal address that can be accessed through the Internet) as a backup. Be sure you have confirmed your speaking time! 10 Read Lectures 21 and 22. There is no textbook assignment for this module. Homework Assignment #16: Effective Interviewing Go to the Effective Interviewing Discussion Forum. Post your responses to these questions: What do you think a person should do to prepare for a job interview? Have you interviewed for a job recently? If so, what did you do well and what areas of your interviewing techniques need improvement? Have you experienced any nervousness or fear when interviewing for a job? You must post your initial response by Friday, July 6 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Sunday, July 8 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #17: Training Speech Topic If you have not chosen a topic for the Training Speech, review this assignment within the Major Assignments portion of the course. Then submit your first, second and third choices of topic from the list of topics specified within that assignment. Use the drop box located in Lesson 21. You must submit your topic choices to me by Sunday, July 8 at 11:30 p.m. Major Assignment: Written Critique of a Live Speaker is due by Tuesday July 10 at 11:30 p.m. Submit your paper to the Drop Box located in Lesson 22. See the Homework/Assignments portion of the course for more information on this assignment. Save your document as a Microsoft Word document or Text file. Homework Assignment #18: Interview Questions Copy the interview questions located in Lecture 21: Effective Interviewing into a Word or Rich Text document. Then type out the answer you would give to an interviewer for each question. Then type out the answer you would give to an interviewer to each question. As you write your responses, consider your wording, the position you would be applying for, and the company with which you would be interviewing. Save the changes to your document and submit it to the Drop Box by Wednesday, July 11 at 11:30 p.m. Module Five: Friday, July 13-Thursday, July 27 Read Lectures and Textbook Chapter 17

11 Major Assignment: Resume and Cover Letter Due by Saturday, July 17 at 11:30 p.m. See the Homework/Assignments portion of the course for more information on this assignment. Homework Assignment #19: Small Group Communication Go to the Group Communication Discussion Forum. Post your responses to these questions: Have you had any experience working in a team or committee either in your workplace, in school or through a volunteer organization? Describe your communication experiences--both good and bad. What do you think is the key for communicating effectively in a small group environment? You must post your initial response by Monday, July 16 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Wednesday, July 18 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #20: Crisis Management Imagine this scenario, you are the CEO of a company that manufactures children's vitamins. You get word that several children who have taken your company's vitamins have become ill and doctors suspect that contamination within the vitamins may be to blame. How do you handle this crisis? What steps will you take and in what order? Post your response to the Crisis Management Discussion Forum. You must post your initial response by Wednesday, July 18 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their comments and observations. You must post these responses by Friday, July 20 at 11:30 p.m. Homework Assignment #21: The Toast Create a toast that you might give in a professional setting. The recipient may be real or imaginary. Follow the guidelines on effective toasting given in Lesson #25: Special Occasion Speaking within the Lectures portion of the course. Write your toast out word-for-word and post it in the Special Occasion Speaking Discussion Forum. You must post your toast by Friday, July 20 at 11:30 p.m. Then respond to at least two of your classmates' postings by sharing your reaction to their toasts. You must post these responses by Tuesday, June 23 at 11:30 p.m.
